Access Sacramento Showcases
Services at National Conference
Experts on public access broadcasting were consistent in their message last week during an annual conference of media and arts organizations: Free speech isn't free and members at most local public access broadcast and arts centers will need to pay more if those services are going to survive.
Executive Director Gary Martin described the over-the-air outreach KUBU-LP 96.5 FM will bring as a way to increase awareness and sponsorship of Access Sacramento while speaking to more than 70 attendees at a concurrent panel during the Alliance for Community Media and National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture joint conference in Philadelphia.

|
Martin was joined on the panel by three arts organizations from New York, all of whom agreed that digital outreach was valuable, but remaining true to the core mission was the way to achieve sustainability.
Other experts described methods of increasing funding, but most were in agreement that crowd-funding for a specific need was better than trying to pay for regular operating expenses. Turning new donors into friends that give regularly should be the goal.
While high-profile programs like the Film Society of the Lincoln Center and the Tribeca Film Festival can pull in national sponsorships worth thousands of dollars, smaller operations like public access centers must reach out to a broad base of local supporters who can help with volunteer time and other resources in addition to cash.
