New Youth News Correspondents
Welcomed To AccessLocal.Tv
This week, four new youth Neighborhood News Correspondents join the AccessLocal.Tv team after a countywide search for student participants. Zaire Johnson, Jennifer Nievera, Carly Wipf, and Yeshahyah "King" Yisrael join returning Correspondents Mario Ayala and Sage Lauwerys for this 14-week summer program.
Neighborhood News Correspondents are trained by AccessLocal.Tv Youth Media Coordinator Isaac Gonzalez to create written articles, produce a podcast, and host a television program, all of which feature stories about from the communities of Sacramento County. Correspondents who complete their tasks are provided with modest compensation thank to the generous support of The California Endowment.
"These young people enter the program with wide eyes and curious minds," says Gonzalez. "We give them the tools and training needed to take their aspirations to the next level via digital media and journalism."
Most of the content produced by the team centers around the Sacramento Building Healthy Community initiative, created by The California Endowment. The 10-year, $1 billion effort is focused on 14 communities throughout California and is designed to increase the health outcomes of its residents. Locally, over three dozen organizations and individuals receive support from the Sac BHC program with the goal of making South Sacramento a healthier place for the residents of Oak Park, Colonial Heights, Lemon Hill, Fruitridge Manor, Tahoe Park, and adjoining South Sacramento neighborhoods.
Be on the lookout in the coming weeks for new content from these Correspondents on AccessLocal.TV!

Cosumnes River College Names New Radio, TV & Film Professor
Long time Cosumnes River College part-time instructor Lauren Wagner will be the new full time professor for the college's well-respected Radio, TV and Film Production program beginning this Fall.
 |
CRC Professor Lauren Wagner will begin her job in August, 2014.
|
Wagner has been teaching part time at CRC since 2009 and has also taught at Cal State, Sacramento. Having taught most of the televison and film production classes already as an adjunct professor, she takes over with exceptional experience and preparation.
Wagner actually earned her Associate of Arts degree in RTVF from CRC many years ago, before completing a Bachelor's degree at San Francisco State and her Master of Fine Arts in Film from USC.
Wagner follows in the footsteps of her old professor, Gary Martin, now the Executive Director here at Access Sacramento. "I guess I'll have to stop calling it 'Gary's Office' when I move in later this summer," Wagner said during a CRC faculty gathering last Thursday.
Martin will be honored with the title Professor Emeritus during this Thursday's commencement exercises at Cosumnes River College.

Filmmaker, Gary Nyland
is Preserving State Fair History
My name is Gary Nyland, I'm making a film about the California State Fair and I could use your help.
Under the auspices of Access Sacramento, I'm making a short documentary about the history of the State Fair that will be screened at the Crest Theater in October 2014 as part of the 15th annual A Place Called Sacramento film festival. It will play outside of the regular competition as a legacy film, intended to showcase both the historical richness of Sacramento as well as spotlight the filmmaking talents of a PCS alumnus.
I'm a Sacramento native, have been attending the Fair since its heyday on Stockton Blvd. and this project will be a publicly accessible guide to Sacramento's colorful past, a map to her present condition and a light on her future possibilities.
I am searching for images, both still and moving, of a state fair that's been held continuously since 1854. I'm also searching for posters, programs, collectibles, ephemera, news articles and anecdotal remembrances. Happily, Sacramento seems to be the perfect place to research this very popular annual attraction.
The intent here is not as a profit-making venture but as a love letter to my home town and a community-building inspiration. Having grown up here in a pre-preservation era, I am acutely aware of how easily our fantastic past can be bulldozed and quickly forgotten.
Any resources that you can share with me will be greatly appreciated, both by me and by generations of Sacramentans.
Sincerely,
Gary Nyland
