Orientation Class Announcement
Last Chance this Year!
Are you a Sacramento County resident who wants to share your thoughts, opinions, and ideas on local television or radio? Consider joining Access Sacramento! We are a free-speech forum that gets you 'access' to popular forms of media so you can do just that. We exist so that you can express yourself and share what you're passionate about on local television and radio. Did you know that as a member of Access Sacramento you get one hour of airtime each month? Did you know that members get to use most of our equipment for free? Want to know more? Come to our last orientation class of the year.
Access Sacramento's Orientation class meets on Wednesday, December 18th at 6pm.
The class is free and open to the public. It will last a little over an hour. It is also a mandatory step in becoming an Access Sacramento member and should be taken at your earliest convenience. Sign up now as classes fill up fast and our next orientation class will not be taking place until January 2014.
The Orientation Class will give you a chance to ask questions and learn about our services and what we provide to the community and its members. We also will go over the standard classes we offer and member benefits as well as getting a tour of the facility. The class is taught by our Executive Director, Gary Martin and occasionally by staff persons Michelle Barbaria and Elizabeth Harrison.
Please take note that the holidays conflict with other normally scheduled orientation classes so please mark your calendar if you are considering membership. All classes are provided on a first come, first serve basis, so take advantage before the classes fill up. You must be a member in order to take our standard classes, but orientation is open to everyone and is the first step in becoming a member of Access Sacramento.
We hope to see you there!

Access Sacramento Applies for
Low-Power FM Radio License
Executive Director, Access Sacramento
Access Sacramento's radio operation "The Voice" may begin broadcasting over-the-airwaves from downtown Sacramento in late 2014 if the FCC approves an application filed last week to operate a Low-Power FM (LPFM) radio station.
| Access Sacramento has a Letter of Reasonable Assurance from the tower owner for the building where the transmitter would be placed in downtown Sacramento as an extra component of its FCC LPFM application. |
The application-filing window closed Friday for non-profit groups to submit an on-line request for the rarely offered LPFM broadcast frequencies. The last opportunity was a decade ago.
"Because a LPFM station like this broadcasts less than 10-miles in any one direction, the programming is acutely local," said Shane Carpenter, Access Sacramento's radio coordinator. "Because our programmers are already used to serving Sacramento County on cable, this would be a great opportunity for additional outreach."
Currently, radio programmers from Access Sacramento are heard as a backdrop to the community message bulletin board on our two cable channels and on the Internet.
 |
Radio programmers work from two radio production and broadcast studios at Access Sacramento inside the Coloma Community Center.
|
The LPFM station application, if approved, would become a training ground for community producers who want to share their messages and programming simultaneously on cable, the Internet and over the airwaves.
Access Sacramento provides radio and television programing that is unique in Sacramento County, serving the community with its mission by "giving voice to the thoughts, dreams, opinions, and community events not otherwise seen or heard on commercial or public, TV, radio or other popular forms of media."
Access Sacramento's "The Voice" radio service has been in operation from the organization's beginning 27 years ago and originally was heard as a second-audio-channel for cable subscribers in Sacramento County.
An unknown number of non-profit organizations will have applied for the available frequencies across America, and Access Sacramento expects to learn in the next few weeks who else has applied for a frequency in this area.
Experts from Common Frequency, an engineering firm hired by Access Sacramento to help with the technical specifications of its application, predict a minimum of two frequencies are likely for the capital region.
Frequency locations with only one applicant are scheduled to be notified in early 2014 of their approval for a construction permit. For frequencies with multiple applicants, an opportunity to partner will be encouraged by the FCC before any allocation decision.
LPFM station applications became available after Congress directed the FCC to create more broadcast opportunities for community-based radio in the Local Community Radio Act of 2010. The rule expanded the availability even more by including larger urban areas that had been restricted under an earlier law.
According to the Prometheus Radio Project, there are more than 800 LPFM stations already on the air with programming from non-profit agencies, churches, colleges and emergency responders.
Access Sacramento is a non-profit 501(c)3 foundation providing video services on Comcast and SureWest Cable channel 17 and 18 and on AT&T U-Verse Channel 99. Both the video channels and "The Voice" can be heard by clicking on the appropriate link from AccessSacramento.org.

Watch the "Place Called Sacramento" Films On-Line
This year's 10 original short films created for Access Sacramento's 14th Annual Place Called Sacramento film festival can be viewed on-line from the AccessLocal.tv website.
The films made their world premiere at The Crest Theatre last month after 10 script writers-turned-producers delivered their films, all of which showcase some aspect of living in Sacramento.
The films can be found at http://accesslocal.tv/category/local-film/pcs2013/
"The quality of this year's film script submissions was particularly high," said Michelle Barbaria, the 2013 Place Called Sacramento film festival coordinator. "The audience at the premiere was delighted by the exceptional effort by all the filmmakers. The acting and the technical aspects really showcased the quality of Sacramento filmmakers."
Each of the films runs no more than 10-minutes including opening titles and closing credits.
The initial call for script entries into the 15th Annual Place Called Sacramento will go out in January, 2014. Watch the Access Sacramento website AccessSacramento.org for details.

|
Hollywood actor, director and musician Tim Russ provided acting pointers and an insider's view of working in the television and movie industry during the Saturday evening taping of "Sacramento Film Works," which airs at 6 p.m. on the first Saturday of every month on Access Sacramento.
The Northern California Filmmakers Coalition produces the show hosted by Kanisha Allen and Cline Moore. The program highlights filmmaking in the Sacramento region and is noted for its focus on providing job tips for aspiring filmmakers.
Russ is best known in his role as Tuvok on the Star Trek Voyager series. He continues to work in television and movies as an actor, but recently also directed a new lower budget feature film, Star Trek Renegades, due out in 2014.

Interning At Access Sacramento Creates Opportunity
By Erika Bradley
Access Sacramento Intern
Currently I am a student at Sacramento State majoring in Mass Communication with a minor in Journalism. At this time I do not have a specific career in mind, however, I do know that in some way I would like to work in the media.
Interning at Access Sacramento is a great way for me to accomplish my goals and get the experience I want. I am looking to get experience in television production, learning all different types of jobs associated in the production process. It correlates with my studies in several ways. First, communication is very important in production.
There are many other people to communicate with when filming to make sure that everything from set-up to the actual filming to tear down goes as well as possible. I want to minor in journalism because I want to also know how to write and report. This way I know more about all of the parts of production verses only part of it.
For more about Erika and the internship experience at Access Sacramento, read the full article at this link in AccessLocal.TV:
