Website Changes Help Mobile Users

By

Liz Harrison

Sometimes when changes occur we all see the difference but at other times the changes are not always noticed or visible. If you haven't been to our website recently there are several of these changes we would like to share.

We created a new look more than a year ago which helped with the look and flow of our website. Banners on the homepage which help navigate as well as promote our Neighborhood News Bureau project, Place Called Sacramento Film Festival, Game of the Week sports broadcasts, Facebook and Twitter information and other events as needed. The homepage now has a 'Quick Links' tab which makes it easier to find things like our Training Workshop page, Event Calendar, The TV Show Connection, The Voice radio broadcasts among others.

Another issue that has been addressed is the channels were streamed as .wmv files which made it difficult for some of our viewers to watch. Now we are being streamed in FLASH. Please take a moment to click on the CHANNEL 17 or CHANNEL 18 buttons and check it out. The page also contains the daily schedule of our programs so you don't miss your favorite shows. Radio folks will also soon see a new page for Radio with their show schedules as well.

Now this does bring up one challenge but there is a solution for it. If you have a smartphone, iPad and want to watch your favorite shows from your mobile device, you will need to download an app. There may be others but below are two options for you to check out. The first is Puffin Browser which is a free app at the following:
http://www.puffinbrowser.com/index.php. Photon Browser is another one but will cost you and can be found at http://www.appsverse.com/Browser.

Other changes to come so check back often and Thanks for watching. Have a suggestion or comment send it to us at Postmaster@AccessSacramento.org

Public Access TV Centers Share Ideas To Help Communities Connect

By

Michelle Barbaria, Carlos Hernandez and Dev Singh

Contra Costa County Supervisor and former California State Assemblyman Joe Simidian used to host a public access television program and his support for community-based programming continues.

Simidian, while speaking to a conference sponsored by the Alliance for Community Media-Western Region two weeks ago in San Jose, noted that public access centers like Access Sacramento help communities connect.

He said communication is at the dawn of new opportunities for our communities through emerging technologies and the spirit and passion of public, educational and government access centers and their cable channel broadcasts.

Future Possibilities to Consider

"Too Cool for School" showed how to use stop frame animation to get kids involved in storytelling and video production. The use of iPads as a device to take the production from A to Z was very intriguing. There are some very inexpensive stop frame animation apps as well as simple editing software available to help the kids make their movies.

"Mobile Devices" brought to the table a variety of very portable cameras, some with WiFi capabilities. The ability to cover an event and upload videos from the event as it is happening is an exciting avenue to follow. Often we cover an event and take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to edit all the footage together. In turn, the event has become an afterthought. Sometimes going big requires going small and portable.

Keep Ahead of Equipment Problems

"How to Effectively Trouble-shoot your Systems" provided a simple, common sense approach to trouble shooting.  Any installation of equipment requires 50 percent of the effort as pre-planning.  The idea was to keep things as simple as possible.  A schematic of the signal path should be posted at the location.  When doing upgrades, converters and adapters should be avoided. When trouble shooting, one should start in the middle of the signal path.  This will save time in the long run.  In fiber optic connections, a dust- free clean environment is very important. A small speck of dust in the signal path could cause havoc and would cause loss of signal.

"How to Have Fun Outdoors!"

GOTW Sports Announcers Will James and Jim Dimino
Tomorrow at 5 p.m. Live on Access Sacramento Live Wire is welcoming back Will James and Jim Dimino to wrap up this season's high school football of Game of the Week. The regular season is over and we'll get an update on which teams are the best chance in the playoffs, and hear how another football season of Game of the Week went.  We'll also get an early preview as the Game of the Week crew gets set for the start of basketball season in December.

For more details about Hometown Game of the Week log onto our website at AccessSacramento.org.

We are also happy to have guests from The Fregoso Outdoor Foundation, a non-profit organization that was created to encourage outdoor leisure time for veterans and their families. Their services are free to their members. Representatives will be on LiveWire to tell us all about their fundraiser "Warriors in Black Tie Inaugural Ball". The event is happening on November 23rd at 5:30 p.m. at the beautifully restored Elks Tower on 11th Street in Sacramento. It is a 1920's period themed event and period costumes are encouraged.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
Game of the Week Finishes Football
#1 Folsom vs. #3 Pleasant Grove

Folsom Quarterback Jake Browning piled on 486 yards in passing to lead the Bulldogs to a 63-39 victory over the Pleasant Grove Eagles to remain undefeated and claim the Delta River League title.

Notably, according to MaxPreps.com, Browning also broke the state record for most scoring TD passes in a season, taking his total to 56 and eclipsing the old mark by four.

Hear Access Sacramento's Will James and Jim Dimino narrate the highlights in Access Sacramento's final football broadcast of the season HERE.

A replay of the game begins tonight at 7 p.m. on Access Sacramento. Tune in on Comcast or SureWest Cable Channel 17, or AT&T U-Verse Channel 99. See the game from anywhere from www.accesssacramento.org Push Watch TV 17.

The Folsom  Bulldogs finish the regular season with a perfect 10-0 overall and 5-0 league record. Coaches Kris Richardson and Troy Taylor have been unstoppable, even against top notch teams like the #3 ranked Pleasant Grove Eagles.

Browning just may be the best passing quarterback in the nation.  Against the Eagles he connected for seven TD's in the air, completing 34 of 43 passes (79%) for 486 yards.  At one point, he had 21 consecutive completions before a dropped ball in the fourth quarter.  The coaches are so confident in Browning's ability to pile on the yards, the team doesn't practice punting.

Coach Joe Cattolico's Pleasant Grove Eagles finish the regular season with an 8-2 overall record and a 3-2 Delta River League tally.

The Internship Experience So Far
By David Stewart
Access Sacramento Intern

A journalist is always talking to people, whether they are the center of the story, they can be supportive with quotes and background information. Being a journalism major at American River College, any experience or internship where you are in constant contact with the public is a big benefit.

The internship experience so far at Access Sacramento has helped improve my communication with the public and co-workers, and helped develop a professional approach to being on the job.

Being a journalist also requires writing articles and stories. Access Sacramento provides me the opportunity to work on its newsletter by both writing articles and  doing the layout. These skills are essential to being a journalist.

For more about David and the internship experience at Access Sacramento, read the full article at this link in AccessLocal.TV:

Sacramento Delta Water Documentary airs Sunday Nov. 17

Two segments on "Media Edge" this Sunday Nov. 17 at 8-10  p.m. will directly feature Sacramento County.

"The Humor Times Presents Will Durst"

Media Edge presents excerpts from political comedian Will Durst's new
one-man show -- "BoomeRaging: From LSD to OMG" -- recorded at the 24th
Street Theatre in Sacramento on August 23, 2013. According to Durst, the
show is about the travails of being "chronologically gifted," or "what
happens when acid flashbacks meet dementia."

"Over Troubled Waters"

The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, the largest estuary on the west coast of
the Americas, is a national treasure being squandered by greed. In this
visually rich documentary, Ed Begley, Jr. narrates the story of the battle
being fought by the people of the Delta to protect the region they love and
encourage saner water policies for all of the people of California.

Media edge airs every Sunday from 8-10 pm on Access Sacramento.  Comcast / SureWest Cable Channel 17 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99.

Full episodes of "Media Edge" can be watched online, at any time!  Links to
available online episodes are here:  http://archive.org/details/mediaedge
