Thanks for the Memories!
by Ron Cooper

This is my last newsletter entry as the Executive Director of Access Sacramento. Gary Martin and I have been busy during the month of July, "passing the torch". His long history with the organization, his leadership skills, talent as a television producer/director, and his good humor will fill my shoes nicely.

As I retire from a career spanning three decades and from an organization I helped create and continue to love, many have asked  - "What's next?" Well first is a cruise to Alaska, round trip out of San Francisco. All who have done this cruise in the past, rate it as the best cruise ever.... should be great fun. But beyond August 18, "What's next?"

First, I know I will miss all of you. Arriving to work each morning, see the staff opening up the studio, new members learning the ropes of production, classes in the studio, radio production going round the clock, the crew loading the cart with equipment to do another "Game of the Week" or "Hometown-TV" shoot, etc. Such energy and creativity on display everyday.

I will miss the Board and their efforts providing leadership to the organization. New fundraising projects in the works, preparing agendas and minutes, orienting new members of the Board - the constant whir of leadership and decision making.

I will miss the orientation sessions as potential members listen patiently and contemplate the possibilities of "having my own show". Always, the constant buzz of activity - Giving tours of our TV studio as local musicians tune up their instruments, editing decisions are tweaked in the Media Lab, and cameras are checked out for location shoots and new "Place Called Sacramento" movies.

I will miss co-productions with all our partner agencies, the Cable Television Commission, and the many groups working together for the improvement of our larger community. Our cooperative spirit marks our region as much as the trees and rivers - we work well together.

What's next? There will be a period of introspection. Getting adjusted to new routines yet to be established will take several months. Maybe volunteering as a docent at one of our many great museums or history centers? Maybe some writing - "Memoirs of a Community Media Addict"?? Visiting the "kids" in SoCal? Absolutely! Gardening.... more travel.... visiting friends I haven't seen in years.

But one thing is for sure, I won't be too far away - I am looking forward to attending the 14th Annual "Place Called Sacramento" film festival at the Crest on October 6. And Santa just called to remind me he needs my help for the "Livewire Christmas Special" in December.

So until we meet again - thank you, thank you, thank you. We have succeeded beyond our greatest dreams in so many ways. Let's continue our journey with joy, conviction, k
indness, and creativity. Working together, we shall continue to "make a difference, one voice at a time".

Best Experience at 2013

California State Fair

By: David Stewart

Hi! My name is David Stewart and I am currently interning here at Access Sacramento. This has been a very enjoyable experience. It's been my pleasure to meet and work with the people who have begun to help me learn how Access Sacramento operates. I was given the opportunity to write an article for the newsletter and would like to share with you a brief look at some of the experiences I  had when I went to the California State Fair.

The first day of the State Fair I had the opportunity to see the awesome American hard rock band, Night Ranger in concert. Their power ballad "Sister Christian" was met with non-stop singing from everyone in the audience, myself included. I also saw Suzy Haner's hypnotist show which was pretty entertaining to watch her guests do incredibly funny things on stage. These shows were entertaining however, the best experience I had, by far, was attending the Freestyle Motorcross show.

Being a huge fan of the sport of motorcross, I was extremely excited when I saw the "Extreme Zone" being prepared with ramps and saw in the distance MX bikes being unloaded from a trailer. After taking my seat in the stands with my girlfriend, the announcer came out at around 5:15 pm and began to introduce the show and the sponsors. The riders then revved up their engines, unleashing the shrieking howl of the MX bikes and began to do practice jumps off the ramp. Their jumps were between 30-75 feet in the air. After about 10 minutes of practice jumps and roaring fans, the announcer then introduced the riders Jesse Jolson, Sean Nielson and Dustin Nowack individually and then excitedly asked the fans if we were ready for some freestyle. The response was an immediate and thunderous roar. Each rider then began to individually go off the ramp at high speed and land some of the most spectacular stunts and tricks, ranging from the Lazy Boy to the Dead Body.

The announcer then wanted to know if we were ready for the final act of the show, Back flips! Everyone cheered and screamed as the riders landed simple Back flips and then began to mix the flips with stunts such as Indian Air and Heart Attack. Being my first Motorcross show ever, I was incredibly thrilled and amazed making this my best experience at the 2013 California State Fair.

Well that's all for now. I hope you have enjoyed this little piece of my summer, In the future I hope to have the pleasure of interacting with you, the members, who are the driving force of Access Sacramento.
