Congress, County, City and Commission honor Access Sacramento Executive Director Ron Cooper

See Cooper's recognition documents and awards
in Access Sacramento's Main Office!

Executive Director Ron Cooper was honored at a retirement celebration Friday where nearly six dozen friends, family and members of the Access Sacramento board of directors delivered commendations, resolutions and congratulatory messages.

Cooper retires at the end of the month after 26 years at Access Sacramento, 22 years as Executive Director.

Congress Member Doris O. Matsui, California 6th District, noted "upon his leadership, Access Sacramento became nationally recognized as a pioneer in media technology and advocate for voicing unheard, marginalized voices and opinions." Matsui's comments were posted Friday to the Congressional Record.

Non-profit Access Sacramento's primary funding comes of the Sacramento Metropolitan Cable Television Commission (SMCTC).

Steven Detrick & Jo Ann Fuller congratulates Cooper on his retirement!

"Ron Cooper has been instrumental in bringing foreign language programming to Access Sacramento, to serve the many different national and ethnic groups that have made their homes in Sacramento," said Steven Detrick, SMCTC chair and Vice-Mayor of Elk Grove, in presenting a resolution honoring Cooper's many years of service.

The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors also wished Cooper a happy and healthy retirement in a resolution recognizing his successful ability to organize local community centers to create Neighborhood News Bureaus, and for his leveraging of funds to provide video equipment and training in Sacramento County.

Likewise, the Sacramento City Council honored Cooper for "working tirelessly for more than two decades to help the people of Sacramento love this area as much as he does," noted a city resolution signed by all nine council members. "Every festival, parade, election debate, speaker, panelist, high school and college athlete who might have gone unnoticed on mainstream TV had the attention of a man whose quite yet forceful leadership has strengthened and broadened our community's very best attributes."

Cooper gets a hug from his proud mother!

Cooper's friends, relatives and Access Sacramento members gathered at Frasinetti's Restaurant and Winery in south Sacramento for the buffet and commendation ceremony.

The recognition documents and awards are on display through the end of the month in the Access Sacramento main office.

The awards ceremony was videotaped by an Access Sacramento TV crew and will play on Comcast/SureWest Cable Channel 17 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99 next month.

Sacramento Mental Health Convention

Creating Community Solutions from the Sacramento Convention Center

Part of the Obama Administration's

National Dialogue on Mental Health

Access Sacramento taped a television special  during last weekend's "Creating Community Solutions: Part of the National Dialogue on Mental Health" conference at the Sacramento Convention Center. The event was spearheaded by an opening speech from Sacramento's Mayor Kevin Johnson and featured appearances by US Congress member Doris Matsui, State Senator pro Tem Darrell Streinberg, State Assemblymember Roger Dickinson, and many more.

Earlier this year, President Barack Obama launched a national conversation on mental health in order to reduce the shame and secrecy associated with mental illness, to encourage people to seek help if they are struggling with mental health problems, and to encourage individuals whose friends or family are struggling to connect them to help.

Conference speakers noted that even though mental health problems affect nearly every family, communities too often struggle to have an open and honest conversation about these issues. They said misperceptions, fears of social consequences, discomfort associated with talking about these issues with others, and discrimination all tend to keep people silent. Experts agree when people get the help they need,  most can and do recover and lead happy, productive, and full lives.

This national dialogue which began in Sacramento Saturday was designed to give Americans a chance to learn more, from research and from each other, about mental health issues. Organizers said this is the first of 10 planned events across the nation where community conversations will assess how mental health problems affect their communities and will discuss topics related to the mental health of young people. In so doing, they also will decide how they might take action to improve mental health in their families, schools, and communities.

This could include a range of possible actions to establish or improve prevention of mental illnesses, promotion of mental health, public education and awareness, early identification, treatment, crisis response, and recovery supports available in their communities.

More than 500 participants took part in the Sacramento event, providing input on how we as a nation should move this conversation forward. Access Sacramento captured footage of the various presenters throughout conference, and held exclusive interviews with many of the facilitators, stakeholders, residents, and elected officials who were in attendance.

Once complete, the edited footage will become a televised special to be aired on Access Sacramento and streamed on the internet around the world.

Youth Story of the Week

Special Academy at Hiram Johnson offers medical field experiences to students

By Felicia Vasquez
Hiram Johnson High School Student, 17
The Health and Medical Sciences Academy at Hiram Johnson is one of the Sacramento City Unified School District's most valuable educational programs. Students in the academy are exposed to various careers in both the health and the medical field. During their years in high school, participants are given the opportunity to do hands-on work such as running events, working with health and medical field professionals, and running labs in science classes only available to HMS students. In addition, when HMS students enter their senior year they are given the chance to apply for several internships which provide even more experience in the field that they have been studying throughout high school.

One internship HMS helps their students obtain is with a local non-profit called Harvest Sacramento. Interns for Harvest Sacramento work all year long with a group of underclassmen. Each individual group is responsible for planning and executing a project of their choice which improves their school community in some way. As interns, the seniors are responsible for running the activities that the group has to perform together to get to their goal. This internship allows them to branch out as leaders and improve both their public speaking and social skills.

Another internship offered to HMS students is at Briarwood Healthcare, a nursing facility for elderly disabled patients. While interning for Briarwood, students are able to see how a healthcare facility works and experience a hospital setting environment for themselves.
