New Executive Director Begins
Week Two

Access Sacramento's new Executive Director Gary Martin this week is beginning the process of taking on the business and management tasks associated with the new job.

Martin is working with retiring Executive Director Ron Cooper to learn the day-to-day operations of administering Access Sacramento's two cable channels, internet radio station and extensive training program. "Making sure I know how to handle the finances and ensure that the staff and bills get paid is a top priority," said Martin, who comes to the job after 20 years as a professor of television and film production at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento.

"I'm grateful to the Access Sacramento board of directors for arranging this one-month cross over with Ron," said Martin. "His perspective and willingness to share his experience is priceless during this transition."

Access Sacramento's volunteers, paid-membership and staff annually create thousands of hours of television programming for Channels 17 and 18 on Comcast/SureWest cable and AT&T U-verse Channel 99.

The production department holds frequent workshops for the public who want to learn how to work in a TV studio or to shoot and edit their own short films.

"The staff and the many volunteers I've met in the last week have all been very welcoming," said Martin. "Everything is running smoothly and that makes it easy for Ron and me to focus on making the change over very efficient."

Both Cooper and Martin talked about the transition live on-cable last Wednesday during Access Sacramento's "Live Wire" program with host Ray Tatar. It was Martin's first appearance on the show. "Live Wire" is the longest-running live weekly on-air interview show in Sacramento after first airing in 1992.

"Normally, I try to avoid being on camera myself," said Martin. "It has always been my job to make sure other people get that opportunity, and that continues through the Access Sacramento training programs."

Cooper is retiring on Aug. 1. A fund-raising dinner honoring his many contributions to the Sacramento community is scheduled for Friday, July 19 at Frasinetti's Winery. Tickets are $50 per person and can be ordered by calling Access Sacramento during regular business hours at 916-456-8600 ext. 0.

Youth Story of the Week

Homelessness Rising

By Genie Gil

Has it ever occurred to you that the number of homeless people roaming our streets has increased?

In a recent study on billmoyers.com, they believe sequestration is the cause for the rising number of homeless. The lack of employment and sequestration has affected our economy to cause these changes.

The loss of jobs causes people not to be able to afford the payments on their houses causing people to have to stay in hotels or cheaper homes. But as time passes and if these people don't get a job soon they have to rely on sleeping in their cars. Due to the fact that these people don't have money for gas they become stuck parked somewhere where their cars get towed.

Without a car these people have now become homeless living in our streets.

It's sad how everyone stereotypes these kind of people not knowing the story behind this person. Yes, some of these homeless have become drug addicts but these people have suffered with, no jobs, no homes, no food. The people without homes, roaming our streets, suffering of hunger are all because of our economy.

"I'm so hungry I can't go inside this store because I've stolen from here before. I stand out here hoping and having faith in God that someone will offer me food so I can eat and feed my family," said a homeless that goes by "Big Bob".

So next time you walk by a homeless person, stop and think that maybe you could be in their situation
