Media Edge (Sunday 8 PM - channel 17) Remembers George Stoney On the Anniversary of His Passing
On Sunday night July 7 at 8 PM channel 17, "Media Edge" remembers the visionary documentary filmmaker and "father" of public access cable television, George Stoney. "Media Edge" is a video magazine series presented on many cable access channels in the United States. "Media Edge" has offered two hours of in-depth, thought-provoking, progressive viewpoints every week since April 2005. Media Edge" features segments created by local producers, along with nationally distributed videos and documentaries. In this episode, Media Edge offers six examples of George's work and documents his influence in the field of community media.
A TRIBUTE TO GEORGE STONEY
George Stoney passed away on July 12, 2012 at the age of 96. He was a prolific documentary filmmaker (including the Emmy Award-winning PBS documentary "We Shall Overcome", "All My Babies", "The Uprising of '34" and "The Weavers: Wasn't that a Time"), educator, and "the father of public access TV."
This week's episode of Media Edge marks the first anniversary of his passing, and is devoted to his life and never-ending support of community media.
"George Stoney: A Life in Film" (12 minutes)
An excellent overview of the many achievements of George Stoney.
"Amy Goodman Interviews George Stoney"
(16 minutes) On September 30, 2005, Amy Goodman interviewed George Stoney about the public access television movement on "Democracy Now!"
"Everyone's Channel" (60 minutes)
This 1990 video documents the history of U.S. community television and public access TV, using rare video clips from across the nation. Combining
unique archival footage from the early days of cable, rediscovered footage from the late 1960s, and interviews with access pioneers, it provides an
illuminating overview of the people (especially George Stoney), ideas, and technological developments that helped make cable access a reality, and
stresses the continuing need to see it as a vital necessity and right. From the birth of the video revolution, inspired by the marketing of portable TV
equipment, to the first access channels in New York City and beyond, "Everyone's Channel" portrays the evolution of an idea that refuses to die.
"George Stoney" (16 minutes)
An intimate and touching portrait of George Stoney at the age of 93.
"The Uprising of '34" (6 minutes)
An excerpt from George Stoney's startling documentary, which tells the story of the General Strike of 1934, a massive but little-known strike by hundreds
of thousands of Southern cotton mill workers.
"George Stoney: A Happy Collaborator"
(2 minutes) An excerpt from a work-in-progress profile of George Stoney and his strong support of organ donation

Access Sacramento Names New Executive Director - Gary Martin
The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the selection of Mr. Gary Martin as the incoming Executive Director of Access Sacramento, commencing July 1, 2013. Martin will replace retiring E.D. Ron Cooper who will be officially leaving the organization on August 1 after a thirty-day transition period.
Mr. Martin is the Department Chair and Professor of Radio, TV, and Film at Cosumnes River College. He has been with the program since 1993 and prior to his teaching career in broadcast television, he worked as a newscast producer at KXTV News10 in Sacramento, Weekend Managing Editor at KTSP in Phoenix and Senior Newscast Producer at KTVN in Reno, Nevada.
He was the Vice Chair of the Access Sacramento Board of Directors but requested a voluntary leave of absence from the Board during the ED search process commencing in October of 2012. To quote from his application cover letter: "The new Executive Director must understand the delicate relationships that sustain Access Sacramento's core funding, must be an articulate spokesperson for the First Amendment, Free Speech and citizen journalism for Sacramento County, but also must be an experienced forward thinking business manager for a media company with a network of complex technological requirements."
The Executive Committee of the Board selected the nationally recognized public, education, and government access consultants, The Buske Group to conduct a thorough national search for candidates. Facilitated by The Buske Group's Randy Van Dalsen, applications were solicited, received, and screened from multiple states.
Cooper commented on the process, "On behalf of all the staff and volunteers, we thank the Board and The Buske Group very much for doing such a thorough job. I have enjoyed my involvement at Access Sacramento for the past 28 years. I am glad the Board has taken the time to make sure we find the right person to continue our successful efforts to make a difference in our community". Plans are underway to host a retirement event for Cooper in July thanking him for his long service to the organization.
Access Sacramento, a 501c3 nonprofit corporation, creates and manages television programming for two community access cable channels in Sacramento County. Programs are seen on Comcast and SureWest cable on channels 17 and 18, and on AT&T U-verse on Channel 99. Other services include community radio programming, internet services and training programs for audio and video media. Access Sacramento is also the host for the annual "Place Called Sacramento" film festival, now in its 14th year.

Youth Story of the Week
Child Care At College Helps Students
By Alisia Barrera
Foothill High School student, age 17
Foothill High School's Cheri Mendoza took her Child Care & Development/Careers with Children classes on a field trip to American River College on the third of April. At ARC, the students attended an orientation and learned about the courses available in the field of child care.
When the students entered the conference room, an ARC folder stuffed with brochures and pamphlets was sitting on the tables for them. Four representatives discussed classes concerning the well-being and education of children. After a couple hours of info-filled lectures from the representatives, the visitors were led around campus for a tour. They explored the child care center.
The child care center is separated from the college and has seven rooms. As the students walked in, they noticed a beautiful little area full of plants where the young ones learn about science. Each age group (ranging from two to kindergarten age) is kept in a different room. All of the rooms contain fun toys and games, costumes to play dress up, and a wooden playset where children can play doctor. Outdoors there are sandboxes, jungle gyms, and wagons.
A playhouse was also available for the children to go in. The kids also had their own small garden away from the playground, where they could sit outside at tables and enjoy the sun.
"I really love the little garden, it is a great way to teach kids about nature, and the children also get to enjoy the nice weather," said an anonymous student.
Nap time does take place in ARC's child care center, but is not a requirement. The cafeteria supplies food and snacks for the kids too.
"ARC's daycare is really well put together and makes it so I don't have to worry so much about my daughter while I am in class," another parent said. American River College has a spectacular child care program, and while their priority is their students, they also find plenty of time to run their child care center during the summer.
