Dear ,
I hope you're staying safe during Hurricane Sandy! As we prepared at our house, I thought about what I would want and need to take if we had to evacuate: My laptop, day planner, and iPhone, for sure! My favorite clothes and most practical shoes. Money (cards, checks, and cash). My address book (priceless). And then I'd want to take all my photo albums (not practical), books (again - too bulky and heavy), and my ukulele to pass the time away at the shelter (until they threw me out for playing a ukulele all day long)! My important papers. Not that much, really.
Of course I have lots of other things that I value or that make my life easier or more fun, but there are a limited number of critical items in my "grab and go" bag. When we consider the important things - family, friends, our personal safety - lots of the "stuff" we hold on to is just "stuff". A day like today can help us put a lot of our things into perspective. If we could leave it behind in an emergency, how important is it to keep on a regular day?
Think about your most critical things. Then think about how easy or challenging it would be to get them all together in a hurry. Are they pretty organized in one or two places, or are they all over the place? Maybe getting rid of some of the items we don't really use could give us a little more room to enjoy the things we really do love and use. Maybe it's time to let those other items go. Maybe to the Red Cross donation bin for people who will need them more than we do.
Be safe today. Hold on to the important things - your family and your friends. The rest will sort itself out!

Emergency Planning
As we've prepared for nasty weather over the past few days, we've received some very good advice: stock up on water, batteries, non-perishable foods, etc.; don't touch downed power lines, gas up the car in advance; get cash in case the ATMs go down.
But in planning for an emergency, be sure to consider communications as well. If you and your family got separated AND the phones were down, do you have a plan for how you would find each other? If you couldn't go home, do you have a plan for where you could go?
Whether or not you lose power this evening, consider taking some time around the fireplace or flashlights to put together a family emergency plan. Be sure to include the following:
- A list of contact names and numbers for family in another state who you could all check in with if your own home phone was down (long distance sometimes works when local lines are down).
- A list of contact information for everyone in your household, and their schools, workplaces, doctors. Include text numbers for your family (texting may work when phone calls do not).
- Current photos of each family member.
- A folder or fireproof strong box with vital documents such as birth certificates, passports, social security cards, citizenship cards, medical information such as medical insurance cards, lists of medications, descriptions of any significant treatment information, a medical history form; the declaration page (first page) of your insurance policies, vital contact info, military discharge papers, passcodes. Basically, anything you would need and that would not be easy to replace.
- A list of several places where you might be able to stay, or at least reunite, if needed. Start with the close-by locations (a neighbor, a community location), but include farther-away spots as well (at least 10 miles), just in case of a local community disaster. Consider any pets, and whether or not they will be welcome.
- A "Grab & Go" bag, prepared ahead of time - ideally a backpack or rolling bag containing bottled water, energy bars, a change of clothes and extra underwear, travel-size toiletries, flashlight with extra battries, eyeglasses, first aid kit and medications, an extra set of keys, vital documents and your family's communication plan.
- A recharger for your cell phone or laptop.
Once you've put together your family's plan, make sure everyone has a copy. Store it electronically in an online source like Dropbox (www.dropbox.com) if possible, so that you can access it remotely even if you don't have your hard copy or computer with you.
You may never need it, but planning ahead can make life much easier if a disaster does strike. Why not start it tonight? I hear it's a good night for staying indoors! |
