ASC News Spotlight

As we roll into the new year, don't let you health be put on the lowest rung of your priority list! The longer you put off taking care of yourself, the longer it takes to recover. Plus, if you have insurance, don't forget those deductibles may soon be restarting in 2013, so be sure to use your 2012 visits while you still can!

Upcoming Wellness Weekend: 9:00am-1:00pm
Saturday December 8th, 2012

These weekend hours are especially for those of you needing to get in for wellness chiropractic care. Visits are 20 minutes for current patients, 30 minutes for new, and are geared at keeping your spine in line! Regular wellness care can help minimize the compression and strain placed upon the nerves and, therefore, surrounding muscles, stimulate the immune system, and help to promote overall joint health. Hurry to reserve your appointment- they will fill on a first call, first served basis! To schedule or to request additional details call 858-876-2171 today!

New Additional Office Hours:
Mondays: 11:00am-6:30pm
Wednesdays & Fridays: 9:00am-4:00pm

Exercise Spotlight...
More Exercises to target your core and butt. Pull out that Foam Roller and get toning! Try Exercises 1 & 2 for Posterior toning, and 3& 4 for the front.
  • Exercise 1: Place the foam roller under the mid-section while laying face down. Keeping the arms and upper body in a relaxed position, but remaining still on the ground, bend both legs by bringing both heels toward the glute muscles. Touch ankles, keep the legs bent and lift the lower body while holding that position. This provides a hamstring and core strengthening exercise together.
  • Exercise 2: Lying in the same position as stated above, with the foam roller placed in the same spot, straighten both legs out while keeping the ankles touching. Lift the legs off of the ground as high as they will extend- picture yourself as Supermans's sidekick. Repeat this motion for another glute and core exercise, or to stretch out the core and mid-section before a workout.
  • Exercise 3: Lie on your back with the foam roller positioned length wise underneath you. Extend your arms  overhead and bring your knees up to a 90-degree angle. Tap your right hand to your left knee, and then extend both your arm and leg. Repeat tapping your right hand to your left knee for 10 to 20 reps. Stop and repeat with your left hand and right knee. Perform this movement for three to four sets of 10 to 20 reps on each side
  • Exercise 4: Lie on your back with the foam roller positioned lengthwise in the middle of your back. Raise your legs while keeping your knees bent. Extend your right leg  while keeping your left leg bent. Keep both hands on the floor for added support and stability. Bring your right leg back to the starting position and extended your left leg. Maintain core tightness by pressing your ribs down as you extended each leg downward. Perform this exercise for 10 to 20 reps for three to four sets.

Need a Foam Roller to Get Started? No need to fret- we have plenty of the black foam/ high density version available at the office.  Just give a call to pick one up at your next visit!

Healthy Hints & Tips
Keeping an Attitude for Health

Think that your thoughts don't affect your physical health? Think again. Many of you have experienced for yourself the significant difference that regular chiropractic care can have on managing stress and its physical impact. As you may have heard me mention before, the link between the mind and body is a powerful connection. For years now, studies have been showing that chronic stress and psychological stress in particular can impede wounds from healing, may impair the effectiveness of vaccines and can weaken the immune system.

The NIH has repeatedly been funding studies showing results that individuals that strive to keep a positive attitude have lower cardiovascular risk, lower levels of stress hormones and lower levels of inflammation, which serves as a marker of the immune system.

One such study by cardiologists at the University of Maryland Medical Center found that laughter, along with an active sense of humor, may help protect against a heart attack.  The study also found that people with heart disease were 40 percent less likely to laugh in a variety of situations, compared to people of the same age without heart disease. Hmm... Guess there is something to the saying that "laughter is the best medicine."

Want to learn more? Check out the easy reading book, "Love, Medicine and Miracles" by Dr. Bernie Siegel, MD. Want to improve your own attitude? Start by making a mindful decision to be thankful every day, and make it public. For example, if you have a Facebook account, pick a time everyday to sit down and broadcast what you're gratefull for that day. Remember how I talked about the 66 day path to a new habit? Make this one of them, and watch your body start on an improved path to healing!
