Greetings!

Happy Halloween Friends and ASC Family! For those of you able to get out and about tonight, may it be an enjoyable and safe evening of fun! For those of you that aren't into the holiday, why not take a few moments tonight to plan a little bit of weekend adventure, new activity, or for the more adventurous, maybe even create a new fitness goal? After all, its never a bad idea to work on improving your health!

So, if you've been thinking about losing weight or starting a new workout routine in the new year, why wait? Making new activities a part of your life is all about consistency and dedication. According to research presented in a 2009 issue of the European Journal of Social Psychology, it takes an average of 66 days to create a habit. What does that mean to you?

1. If you have a goal for the new year, start working on it now, rather than waiting around with millions of others that wait for January 1st to hit.
2. don't give up after one month when it still hasn't become "easy" to do. It's not just a physical change your asking your body to make, its a mental one, too! If you're trying to break a habit, it can be even harder. Avoiding the cues that lead us to participating in a negative habit is the best way to break it, but only if you have a new, positive habit that becomes stronger than the old.
3. Last but not least, remember that if you think its going to be difficult to start a new routine or are ambivalent about breaking a bad habit, you'll be less successful. So stay positive and, as Nike says, Just Do It!

And remember, when it starts to get difficult, or your body needs some TLC to help keep you moving forward to reaching your personal Active Success Goals, I'm here to help! Don't wait for health to magically appear. Keep up your chiropractic care, and get out there to start achieving it!

Yours in Health & Success,

Exercise Spotlight...
Targeting the thighs, butt and core...Pilates Frog with Exercise Band

If the recent explosion of costumes showing off the fit and not so fit alike has left you noticing that certain areas of your lower half are, well, "not so fit",  try to following full body exercise Its easy enough to perform right on the comfort of your own home floor, but guaranteed to leave you feeling the burn!

  • Lie on your back with your knees bent in toward your chest, shoulder distance apart with your heels together with the toes a few inches apart.

If choosing to use a resistance band, wrap the middle portion of the band across the balls of your feet.

  • With your head down on the mat, adjust your grip on the band so your chest and shoulders stay pulled down and kept wide as you place your hands near your knees. The band should be taught, but not stretched.
  • Now, nod your head down, and curl your pelvis and ribs of your upper body up off the mat, creating a scooping of the lower abdominal region. The tailbone should always remain down throughout this exercise. Tip: Make the exercise easier by leaving the head down on the mat.
  • Inhale: Keep the heels together and extend the legs at about a 45-degree angle. The lower you extend your legs, the more challenging it is to the abs. However, you must be able to keep your belly down and your back cannot arc up away mat.
  • Exhale: Slowly bend the knees and bring the heels back toward the sit bones. Keep the knees shoulder-width apart.
  • Repeat, doing 6 to 8 extensions. Put your head down if there is too much strain on your neck.

Tips: Make the exercise easier by keeping your head down on the mat. Concentrate on your mid-line as you extend and return your legs, and remember to keep breathing!!
