Newsletter March 2015

Hi Everyone

Just over five weeks now to the first Free Festival of Light this year in Weston-super-Mare on Saturday 11th April.  All space has been taken but a reserve list is being kept just in case someone may have to drop out.

The Birnbeck Suite at the Royal Hotel proved to be an excellent venue for this event.

I'm looking forward to this Festival, I've been fine tuning the layout and we will have a bigger and quieter space for the talks and presentations.  Many thanks to the visitor who came up with the brilliant suggestion.

Well we are now in March and I'm crossing my fingers that the weather will remain good for this time of year, in Weston-super-Mare at any rate.

Hope to see some of you very soon at the Festivals in 2015.

Many Blessings   Liz

Meditators lose less 'grey matter'

Thursday, February 26, 2015        Courtesy of www.wwdty.com

Meditation may help us hold on to more 'grey matter' in the brain, and keep us mentally sharp as we get older, a new study has found.

People who have meditated for years seem to lose less of the brain's grey matter-the tissue that contains neurons-than those who didn't, say researchers from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

When they looked at the brains of 50 long-term meditators, and compared them to 50 non-meditators, they found significant differences in the amount of grey matter between the two. "We expected rather small and distinct effects located in some of the regions (of the brain) that had previously been associated with meditating. Instead, what we actually observed was a widespread effect of meditation that encompassed regions throughout the entire brain," said lead researcher Dr Florian Kurth.

Each group was made up of 28 men and 22 women aged from 24 to 77, and those who meditated had been doing so for between four and 46 years. MRI scans were used to monitor the brains of the participants, and although all the older people in the trial displayed some loss of grey matter, it was far less in those who meditated.

The Golden Fleece

 The Golden Fleece

In Greek mythology, the Golden Fleece (Greek: χρυσόμαλλον δέραςchrysómallon déras) is the fleece of the gold-hair winged ram, which was held in Colchis The fleece is a symbol of authority and kingship. It figures in the tale of the hero Jason and his band of Argonauts, who set out on a quest for the fleece by order of King Pelias, in order to place Jason rightfully on the throne of Iolcus in Thessaly. Through the help of Medea, they acquire the Golden Fleece. The story is of great antiquity and was current in the time of Homer (eighth century BC). It survives in various forms, among which the details vary.

Mare's Tail

Botanical: Hippuris vulgaris (LINN.)

Family: N.O. Haloragaceae

Synonyms -Female Horsetail. Marsh Barren Horsetail.

The Mare's Tail (Hippuris vulgaris) must not be confused with the Horsetail (Equisetum arvense). The Mare's Tail is an aquatic flowering plant, the only British species of a group of plants found growing nearly all over Europe, Russia, Central Asia, and North America. It has a superficial resemblance to the Horsetails, having the same erect, many-jointed stems about as thick as a goosequill, unbranched, except at the base, and tapering to a point, crowded in the whole length by whorls of eight to twelve very narrow leaves 1/2 to 1 1/3 inch long, closely set with hard tips.

The inconspicuous flowers are sessile, i.e. stalkless, in the axils of the upper leaves and consist of a minute calyx, forming an indistinctly two-lobed rim to the ovary a solitary stamen, with red anthers and a single seed. Some of the flowers are often without stamens. They appear in June and July.

In stagnant water the plant grows erect, in running water it bends with the stream, swimming on the surface. The stems are as a rule about 2 feet long.

Culpepper, in common with the older herbalists, considered it of great value as a vulnerary:

'It is very powerful to stop bleeding, either inward or outward, the juice or the decoction being drunk, or the juice, decoction or distilled water applied outwardly.... It also heals inward ulcers.... It solders together the tops of green wounds and cures all ruptures in children. The decoction taken in wine helps stone and strangury; the distilled water drunk two or three times a day eases and strengthens the intestines and is effectual in a cough that comes by distillation from the head. The juice or distilled water used as a warm fomentation is of service in inflammations and breakings-out in the skin.'

The Mare's Tail is not uncommon in shallow ponds, the margins of lakes, etc. where there is a depth of mud and frost cannot reach the roots, which are stout and creeping. When the water is shallow, the upper part of the stem is stout and projects out of the water to a height of 8 inches to a foot or more. The submerged leaves, when the plant grows in deep streams, are often 2 to 3 inches long, paler and broader than those above water.

In some countries it is a troublesome weed in rivers and chokes up the ditches. It has been supposed to assist in purifying the putrid air of marshes by absorbing a great quantity of marsh gas. Goats are said to eat it, and in the north wild ducks to feed on it.

Gerard calls the plant Female Horsetail, and Parkinson Marsh Barren Horsetail. The name, Hippuris, is the Greek word for Mare's Tail.

Mythology of The Ram Across Cultures

Ram

The astrological sign Aries is for many people the most familiar connection to the symbol of the Ram. Signaling the start of the vernal equinox, Aries is the first of the twelve Zodiac signs and represents rebirth and renewal. This is association not unique to astrology, which is itself the distillation of many mythologies and belief systems. The ram figures prominently in a diverse range of mythologies including Pharoanic Egypt , pre-Christian Europe, Classical Greece, West Africa, and the Judeo-Christian tradition and it is often associated with celebrations of the "solar return" or return of spring and fertility after the hiatus of winter. Below is a survey of some the associations and practices surrounding the image of rhe Ram across culutres.

I love those who can smile in trouble,

who can gather strength from distress,

and grow brave by reflection.

'Tis the business of little minds to shrink,

but they whose heart is firm,

and whose conscience approves their conduct,

will pursue their principles unto death.

Homeopathy is twice as effective as placebo

Monday, February 16, 2015        Courtesy of www.wwdty.com

Homeopathy is dismissed as being nothing more than placebo; in other words, any benefits are entirely in the mind of the patient and not in the remedy. But a new review has found that homeopathic remedies are almost twice as effective as placebo.

People given a homeopathic remedy are, on average, 1.98 times more likely to improve compared to those given only a placebo, or dummy pill. But the key is that the participants were given individualised remedies, which tend to be the type prescribed by a homeopath when face-to-face with the patient.

Earlier studies-that found no benefit over placebo-had evaluated the effectiveness of general homeopathic remedies, such as arnica for muscle pains, or oscillococcinum for flu symptoms.

In the new analysis, researcher Robert Mathie from the British Homeopathic Association considered 32 trials, covering 24 medical conditions, but decided to work with only three, which he found to be the most robust.

Morganite

 Morganite

Being a pink stone morganite links with the heart chakra and love.

Morganite is a good stone for combating illnesses caused, or brought on by stress, e.g. heart problems, nervous complaints or impotence. Morganite is also said to be helpful for the lungs and can assist in strengthening the muscles and nerves of the throat area, thereby bringing some relief to conditions such as tuberculosis, asthma, emphysema and other breathing related disorders.

Morganite is very much a stone for bringing and/or allowing love to come into your life and can help to maintain this love as it grows. It awakens in us a love for life and a love for all living things. It inspires compassion, empathy and patience and helps us to realise the equality that exists between the sexes, different races and in our own relationships. It is a stone that can reduce our stress levels and the pressure that we put upon ourselves to succeed. Morganite can help us to enjoy a more contemplative lifestyle and can teach us to speak from, and to listen with, our heart.

Morganite is a stone that can inspire spiritual love and one that can also provide a release for pent up emotions after visualisation work.

Myths from several regions associate birds with the creation of the world

One of several creation stories in ancient Egypt said that when land rose out of the primeval waters of chaos, the first deity to appear was a bird perching on that land. The Egyptians called the god the Benu bird and portrayed it as a long-legged, wading heron in the sun temple at Heliopolis. The Benu bird created the universe and then made gods and goddesses and men to live in that universe.

A number of creation myths from Southeast Asia feature birds. On the great island of Borneo dwell the Iban people, who tell of Ara and Irik, two bird spirits floating above an expanse of water at the beginning of time. Seizing two eggs from the water, Ara made the sky from one egg, while Irik made the earth from the other. As Irik squeezed the earth into its proper size, mountains and rivers appeared on its surface. Then the two creator spirits shaped bits of earth into the first people and woke them to life with bird cries.

Other creation stories begin with the laying of a cosmic egg from which the universe emerges. Indonesia, Polynesia, and the northern European countries of Finland and Estonia have stories of deities flying down to the primeval ocean to lay eggs that hatch into the world.

Birds appear in some myths as earth divers. An earth diver is an animal that plunged to the bottom of the primeval sea and brought up mud from which the earth was formed. Legends of the Buriat and Samoyed people of Siberia feature birds as earth divers. Water birds such as ducks or swans play this role in the creation myths of many Native American peoples, including the Mandan of North Dakota. A Navajo myth about a great flood tells that the people fled to an upper world, leaving everything behind. The bird Turkey then dived into the lower world to rescue seeds so that the people could grow food crops.
