Newsletter February 2015

You may have noticed there was no Newsletter at the beginning of January.   It was just time for a break and 're-charge' after a demanding and challenging year.  I am now well rested as I took time to focus on the build-up of minor symptoms that needed to be addressed. I feel brilliant again now especially as I was able to spend time on my silver work and have decided to either get my kiln repaired or replaced.  Fusing glass is such a magical process and I so miss it.  I'm not sure how big a part the 'oil pulling' has been in this 're-charging' period, but probably quite a big one.

I am working hard on the four Festivals of Light for 2015.  The first one at the new Weston-super-Mare venue The Birnbeck Suite at the Royal Hotel, worked so well.

The previous venue the Winter Gardens next door to the Royal has just been sold to the local college/University campus by the local council for £1 and it will used as the base for the University.

So all change here, should be good.

Many Blessings   Liz

New Sterling Silver Flowers

Handmade Sterling Silver Flowers

At last I've found time to work away with my silver smithing to produce these lovely Sterling Silver flowers with my own fused glass cabouchons as centres.  I will be making them into pendants once I have decided on the design of each individual bail.  I will have these and other designs on offer at the next and subsequent Festivals of Light, starting in Weston-super-Mare on Saturday 11th April.  Details below.  I will post more designs as they are ready on my website.

Oil Pulling

I have been practicing the Ayurvedic (3000 year old Science of life) tried and tested art of Oil Pulling daily since the 1st of January.  I have certainly observed a change in the

colour of my teeth, they were never white but they are now certainly much lighter in colour and feel lovely and clean.  I would say that it is a very safe and inexpensive practice.  I use one tablespoon of sunflower oil each day and three on my fast days when I oil pull three times.  I did try coconut oil which is solid until warmed up, but there seemed SO MUCH of it when in liquid form. I do like the taste but definitely not for me in the practice of oil pulling.

The idea is that the oil draws toxins from the mouth as you pull and swish it though your teeth. Then discard the oil and the toxins to leave your mouth fresh and clean.  If this is of interest see the link below for further details.

Power of thought builds muscles

without exercise

21 January 2015

You can think your muscles back to their former strength after prolonged inactivity, such as after injury. The power of the mind and our thoughts play a significant role in muscle recovery, say researchers.

Mental imagery and thoughts affect the nervous system, which stimulates muscle groups. Carrying out mental exercises can reduce muscle loss by as much as 50 per cent, researchers from Ohio University have found.

Twenty-nine volunteers wore a rigid cast-that immobilized the hand and wrist-for four weeks, and half of these regularly carried out mental imagery, where they imagined they were intensely contracting their wrist for five seconds and then resting for five seconds.

At the end of the four-week experiment, those who had carried out the mental imagery exercises had lost 50 per cent less muscle strength.

Note: I totally beleive in the power of the mind so this is well worth trying.

Chinese New Year

The Year of the Sheep, sometimes known as the Goat

The Year of the Wood Sheep (Wei) starts on February 19, 2015, and ends on February 7, 2016, in the Gregorian calendar. It comes after the Year of the Horse and before the Year of the Monkey in the Chinese calendar. During Spring Festival, people put up symbols of the sheep, as well as the "happiness" sign, in their homes.

Sheep personalities

People born in the Year of the Sheep are thought to be loyal, good natured and kind. They are belived to be introverts who can easily be overtaken by emotion.

Calculating Chinese New Year

According to Helmer Aslaksen, of the National University of Singapore, there are two rules of thumb used to calculate the new year in the Chinese calendar. The first rule of thumb is that Chinese New Year should be the new moon closest to the beginning of spring (in the northern hemisphere), known as Lìchun. This rule is correct most of the time, but it can fail if Lìchun falls close to halfway between two new moons. It failed in 1985 and will fail again in 2015. Chinese New Year will always fall between January 21 and February 21.

The second rule of thumb is that most of the time Chinese New Year will fall 11 (or sometimes 10 or 12) days earlier than the previous year, but if that means that the event would be outside of the Chinese New Year range of January 21 to February 21, a leap month must be added so Chinese New Year jumps 19 (or sometimes 18) days later.

Monkey Mythology

Shumacher's summary of the monkey gods:

Monkey mythology is an important part of both Hindu / Buddhist lore (India) and Zodiac / Taoist / Buddhist lore (China). In the various tales... the monkey is portrayed initially as foolish, vain, and mischievous. Yet, in each tradition, the monkey learns valuable lessons along the way, makes changes, and eventually gains redemption. The monkey thus embodies the themes of repentance, responsibility, devotion, and the promise of salvation to all who sincerely seek it.

Note: The Monkey is one of the 12 animals in Chinese Moon Astrology. The monkey is known to be a clever charming trickster, able to fool many along the way.  I've had two close to me in my life and I have to agree with this summary.

High Priest Breastplate Gemstones
Breastplate of Aaron

Many gem scholars agree that the tradition of birthstones arose from the Breastplate of Aaron: a ceremonial religious garment set with twelve gemstones that represented the twelve tribes of Israel and also corresponded with the twelve signs of the zodiac and the twelve months of the year. "It was square -- a span [22 centimeters] long and a span wide -- and folded double. Then they mounted four rows of precious stones on it.

"In the first row there was a ruby, a topaz and a beryl; in the second row a turquoise, a sapphire and an emerald; in the third row a jacinth, an agate and an amethyst; in the fourth row a chrysolite, an onyx and a jasper. They were mounted in gold filigree settings."

Honeysuckle

Botanical: Lonicera caprifolium (LINN.), Lonicera Periclymenum (LINN.)

Family: N.O. Caprifoliaceae

Medicinal Action and Uses

Synonyms - Dutch Honeysuckle. Goats' Leaf.

Parts Used - Flowers, seeds, leaves.

Caprifoliaceae, the order to which the Honeysuckles belong, includes about 300 species, chiefly shrubs, growing in the north temperate zone or extending into the higher cool tropical regions. Besides the Viburnums and Sambucus, a number have found more or less important uses in medicine, but they exhibit but little uniformity in composition or properties.

Medicinal Action and Uses. A dozen or more of the 100 species of Lonicera or Honeysuckle are used medicinally, the fruits generally having emiticocathartic properties. Several of these drugs have more than a local repute.

The herbage of the true Honeysuckles is a favourite food of goats, hence the Latin name Caprifolium (Goats' Leaf), the French Chèvre-feuille, German Geisblatt and Italian Capri-foglio, all signifying the same. The berries have been used as food for chickens. The name of the genus, Lonicera, was given by Linnaeus in honour of Adam Lonicer, a physician and naturalist, born at Marburg in 1528, who wrote, among other works, the Naturalis Historiae Opus novum, which contains much curious information about plants.

Our native Honeysuckle has expectorant and laxative properties. The flowers in the form of syrup have been used for diseases of the respiratory organs and in asthma and the leaves as decoction in diseases of the liver and spleen. It was also considered a good ingredient in gargles.

Culpepper says:

'Honeysuckles are cleansing, consuming and digesting, and therefore no way fit for inflammations. Take a leaf and chew it in your mouth and you will quickly find it likelier to cause a sore mouth and throat than cure it. If it be not good for this, what is it good for? It is good for something, for God and nature made nothing in vain. It is a herb of Mercury, and appropriated to the lungs; the celestial Crab claims dominion over it, neither is it a foe to the Lion; if the lungs be afflicted by Jupiter, this is your cure. It is fitting a conserve made of the flowers should be kept in every gentlewoman's house; I know no better cure for the asthma than this besides it takes away the evil of the spleen: provokes urine, procures speedy delivery of women in travail, relieves cramps, convulsions, and palsies, and whatsoever griefs come of cold or obstructed perspiration; if you make use of it as an ointment, it will clear the skin of morphew, freckles, and sunburnings, or whatever else discolours it, and then the maids will love it. Authors say, the flowers are of more effect than the leaves, and that is true: but they say the seeds are the least effectual of all. But there is a vital spirit in every seed to beget its like; there is a greater heat in the seed than any other part of the plant; and heat is the mother of action.'

Cicada

Cicado

Cicada lore and mythology is rich and varied as there are around 2500 species of cicada throughout the world, many of which are undescribed and remain a mystery to science. Cicada has been prized as a delicacy and are famed throughout the world for their 'song'.

Cicada Symbolism ~ Rebirth, Authenticity, Eternity

In the imaginal and dream realms of the Greek mythology variety, cicadas were originally human, but they were easily enchanted humans. The Muses, who were fairy-nymph-goddess like beings, played such lovely music for them one summer that they danced all through the day and night. They danced so long and so wholeheartedly, that they died without realizing it. The muses took pity on them, and granted them new lives as creatures who never needed to sleep or eat, and would only sing all day and night. This is when they became cicadas.

The cicadas come out of the ground every seventeen years (Note: not all have the 17 year cycle). On a scientific level, this is to emerge when their predators are low in numbers. On a deeper level, 17 is actually, in numerology, the number 8. The symbol for eternity is a sideways 8. In China, 8 represents the totality of the universe. In the English alphabet, the number 8 is perfectly balanced. Its energy encourages balance in us, resolution of dualities.

Traditionally the number eight is a symbol of power and leadership, material gain. Financial and material abundance have the capacity to come more easily during this season of the cicadas, but the key is, it will come to you only as much as your commitment to rebirth and authenticity come too. Like the cicadas, we who are ready and willing will shed our old skin, and emerge as a truer version of ourselves.

Walking 20 minutes a day reduces chances of premature death

19 January 2015

Just walking 20 minutes a day at a brisk pace could be enough to prevent an early death, say researchers who reckon that inactivity is twice as deadly as obesity.

Walking every day can reduce the risk of premature death by up to 30 per cent, say researchers at Cambridge University, who have assessed the lifestyles and health of 334,161 men and women around Europe. They estimate that 337,000 of 9.2 million deaths recorded across Europe are the result of obesity-where the body-mass index (BMI) is 30 or over-but double that number, 676,000 deaths, were the result of inactivity.

In their study, the researchers reckon that 22 per cent of the participants were inactive, which means they did no recreation activity and were sitting down most of the time at work. However, they would fall into the next category of moderate exercise if they walked every day for just 20 minutes, and this would reduce their risk of premature death by between 16 and 30 per cent.
