Festival of Light

Here we are the 1st of March and a New Moon, seems like a very special time, read my article below.

Just over 4 weeks to the Glastonbury Free Festival of Light on Saturday 5th April.  I have just booked three dates for 2015 in Glastonbury.

I have decided to offer free workshops and presentations at the Glastonbury Festival of Light and of course at the Weston-super-Mare one on 20th September. It took quite a bit of thought as to where to site these in Glastonbury but I feel they will work well there.

Now to get to grips with my latest eBook, lots being stored in my head ready to be put onto paper.

Transformation

I have been going through a huge transformation for the last 8 months.  It has not been easy with lots of very hard lessons to learn, especially with regards to people.  My eyes have been opened and I can see peoples true intentions, this has been so informative. I've felt emotionally drained and exhausted, inertia seems a good description, it has been a very difficult time which has touched every part of my life.  Overwhelmed is the word but I had to force myself onward, I knew this had to end sometime. I was unable to find an ounce of joy in my life despite trying to find something, anything, to lift my spirits.  This is all so unlike me but I do have an absolute trust in the Universe and really I don't have much to complain about. I tried very hard not to burden anyone else with my 'stuff' and I knew this was a process that I must endure and on my own.  Thank goodness I re-homed a sweet rescue dog, Brigit who has shown me nothing but unconditional love from the day I picked her up on 1st August last year. She was obviously waiting to assist me through this time.  Yesterday I realised that I must drop some things from my life and did so.

This morning 1st March with a new moon at 8am I woke up and everything has now changed. I now have, joy, drive, hope, balance and a renewed interest in life.  I also realised that I am now in my 64th year which digits down to a 1 in numerology, a new start! Feels very good indeed and I know that I continue to be blessed, it was just something I had to work through and learn the life lessons fully.

So looking forward to what is to come, don't know what it is but I'm ready.

An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward.

So when life is dragging you back with difficulties,

it means that it is going to launch you into something great.

So just focus, and keep aiming.

Healthy diet better than low-fat to protect against heart disease

www.wddty.com     24 February 2014

A low-fat diet is the usual way to help protect against heart disease-but a whole food diet, including more fruits, vegetables, nuts and fruits, is a better way to reduce your risk, new research has found.

Although a low-fat diet can lower cholesterol, it doesn't reduce the chances of a heart attack or death from heart disease, say researchers from the University of Arizona's college of medicine.

Looking back on studies dating back to 1957 when diet and heart disease became mainstream, the researchers found that a 'whole diet', and especially a Mediterranean diet, reduced the risk far more effectively, even though it didn't necessarily reduce cholesterol levels.

The researchers think that combining healthy foods has a synergistic effect, and is more protective than a blanket low-fat approach.

Obsidian

     Obsidian

Obsidian is volcanic glass

Used in past Shamanic ceremonies to "travel" to the affected part of the body and to remove physical disorders by bring them to the surface and turning them into white light. Black Obsidian is an excellent grounding stone. It is also both protective and stabilising.

Black Obsidian is excellent at bringing any emotional imbalance to the surface so that other stones and crystals may help to clear it away. It helps us to find the hidden factors surrounding a situation so that we may take the best course of action to address that situation. It helps us to retain our balance in times of change. Black Obsidian is also very good for helping us to let go of the past and breaking past habits that are no longer useful. It inspires creativity and promotes sincerity.

Traditionally, Black Obsidian was the stone used for "gazing" or "scrying" and can provide us with an insight into the future. It helps to strengthen our power of prophecy.

The best book in my opinion on crystals is by Melody - Love is in the Earth

Asafetida A Modern Herbal. Mrs M Grieve 1931

Botanical: Ferula foetida (REGEL.)
Family: N.O. Umbelliferae

Synonyms---Food of the Gods. Devil's Dung.
Part Used---An oleogum-resin obtained by incision of root.
Habitat---Afghanistan and Eastern Persia.

A coarse umbelliferous plant growing up to 7 feet high.

Constituents---

Its chief constituent is about 62 per cent of resin, 25 per cent. of gum and 7 per cent oil. The drug also contains free ferulic acid, water, and small quantities of various impurities.

Medicinal Action and Uses---

The odour of Asafetida is stronger and more tenacious than that of the onion, the taste is bitter and acrid; the odour of the gum resin depends on the volatile oil. It is much used in India and Persia in spite of its offensive odour as a condiment and is thought to exercise a stimulant action on the brain. It is a local stimulant to the mucous membrane, especially to the alimentary tract, and therefore is a remedy of great value as a carminative in flatulent colic and a useful addition to laxative medicine. There is evidence that the volatile oil is eliminated through the lungs, therefore it is excellent for asthma bronchitis, whooping-cough, etc. Owing to its vile taste it is usually taken in pill form, but is often given to infants per rectum in the form of an emulsion. The powdered gum resin is not advocated as a medicine, the volatile oil being quickly dissipated.

Adulterants---

Asafetida is admittedly the most adulterated drug on the market. Besides being largely admixed with inferior qualities of Asafetida, it has often red clay, sand, stones and gypsum added to it to increase the weight.

Note: If you buy a piece whole you will avoid the aldulterants. This is now used as an alternative to garlic in food recipes.  It does have a very strong odour and I keep mine well isolated in wrapping inside a screw top jar with tape around the cap.

The Crane

Description: Cranes are beautiful, graceful long-lived birds often said to be messengers of the gods. They are credited with intelligence, sharing of responsibilities (both parents incubate the eggs) and being protective of youngsters. If threatened cranes can be aggressive, but tend to resort to a complex system of threat behaviours to avoid direct battle. Numerous Celtic myths tell of heroic figures such as Aife, the lady of the lake, who were changed into cranes. St Columba of Iona. as said to have changed a Queen and her handmaiden into cranes as a punishment for their wrongdoing.

The crane is associated with knowledge due to it's association with the sunrise (the east being a place of knowledge) but also from its association with Ogham, the alphabet tree of the druids. Ogham was given to humanity by Ogma Sun Face who purposely intended it for the use only of the learned. Since it was known only to the Druids, the term 'Crane Knowledge' came to be used to denote knowledge of the Ogham in particular and of arcane science in general. As Druidry gave way to Christianity, the term 'Crane Cleric' came to be used to signify a high level of wisdom in certain priests, such as St. Columba . Celtic mythology has both solar and underworld symbolism for the crane. It is associated with the solar deities, especially in their healing aspect; and was said to be the first bird to greet the sunrise and was accorded with the ability to predict rain and storms. The crane also represented a form of Pwyll the king of the underworld and herald of death or war.

The crane is often thought of as a messenger and is associated with beauty, solitude and independence. Cranes represent higher states of consciousness and communion with the gods as well as wisdom and cleverness. It is said that the intelligence and discipline of the crane taught man the rules of government. The crane does not simply possess knowledge it possesses self-knowledge, arguably the most important form of understanding there is.

Note: I was interested in the Celtic mythology of my own birth sign and this was what came up for me.

Poirot was right: fish is good for the brain's grey cells

19 February 2014

Top detective Hercule Poirot was on to something when he insisted on eating fish for his 'leetle brain cells'-the omega-3 fatty acids from fish such as salmon and tuna really are good for your brain, new research has confirmed.

The fatty acids help the connections and neural networks in the brain, say researchers at the Oregon Health & Science University, and they may even play a part in reversing some of the symptoms of autism and ADHD (attention-deficit, hyperactivity disorder).

The vital ingredient in the omega-3s seems to be DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which is an important component in the brain, and helps to develop the brain's growth as well as our abilities to see.

The body can't make DHA so we have to get it from supplements or our diet, and the richest source are the fatty fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel.

The researchers have been restricting their research to monkeys, but now they are beginning to ponder just how vital it could be if omega-3s were introduced early into the diet of a small child.

Note: When we took our exams for Nutritional Medicine we were always advised to eat oily fish as opposed to anything else.  Very good advice in my opinion. Salmon is an oily fish.

Salmon
Salmon Mythology

The Salmon of Knowledge (Irish: bradán feasa) is a creature figuring in the Fenian Cycle of Irish mythology. (It is sometimes confused with Fintan mac Bóchra, who was known as "The Wise" and was once transformed into a salmon.) Stories differ on whether Fintan was a common fish or one of the Immortals, that could be eaten and yet continue to live.

The Salmon figures prominently in The Boyhood Deeds of Fionn, which recounts the early adventures of Fionn mac Cumhaill. According to the story, an ordinary salmon ate nine hazelnuts that fell into the Well of Wisdom (aka Tobar Segais) from nine hazel trees that surrounded the well. By this act, the salmon gained all the world's knowledge. Moreover, the first person to eat of its flesh would, in turn, gain this knowledge.

The poet Finn Eces spent seven years fishing for this salmon. One day Finn Eces caught Fintan and gave the fish to Fionn, his servant and son of Cumhaill, with instructions not to eat it. Fionn cooked the salmon, turning it over and over, but when Fionn touched the fish with his thumb to see if it was cooked, he burnt his finger on a drop of hot cooking fish fat. Fionn sucked on his burned finger to ease the pain. Little did Fionn know that all of Fintan's wisdom had been concentrated into that one drop of fish fat. When he brought the cooked meal to Finn Eces, his master saw that the boy's eyes shone with a previously unseen wisdom. Finn Eces asked Fionn if he had eaten any of the salmon. Answering no, the boy explained what had happened. Finn Eces realized that Fionn had received the wisdom of the salmon, so gave him the rest of the fish to eat. Fionn ate the salmon and in so doing gained all the knowledge of the world. Throughout the rest of his life, Fionn could draw upon this knowledge merely by biting his thumb. The deep knowledge and wisdom gained from Fintan, the Salmon of Knowledge, allowed Fionn to become the leader of the Fianna, the famed heroes of Irish myth.

In Welsh mythology, the story of how the poet Taliesin received his wisdom follows a similar pattern

My Amazon Kindle Books

The following eBooks that I have put together are all available on Amazon Kindle.  Most are about $1.17 or 77p.  The one  with the asterisk is about $3.07 and £1.92 The UK price is governed by the dollar exchange rate so can fluctuate a little. I made the decision to price them very reasonably so they were accessible to all, preferring to sell lots for a little rather than at a premium rate.  You don't need a Kindle as you can download to your PC and Amazon gives you the software immediately to do this. I was offering all  these as eCourses and those who have bought them can still return your coursework to gain your Continued Professional Development (CPD) Point certificates.  If any of you still wish to do any eCourses just contact me and we can arrange this.
