Greetings!
Time seems to have flown by since the last Newsletter.
I've packed quite a lot into this months edition. As it is now the year of the horse I've added an article about the white chalk horses of Wiltshire. I have very strong memories of visiting one on a school trip over half a century ago!!
Eucalyptus is a favorite of mine. I sat on Mount Tamilpias nr San Fransisco admiring the trees many miles away which had a fabulous blue haze over the top of them. I would have loved to have been closer as the smell of the oils would have been brilliant.
A couple of interesting articles taken from WDDTY or What the Doctors Don't Tell You website. They now offer a hard copy magazine as well.
I've been wondering if it was possible to try and balance the rain out and ask for lots to be sent to those areas in the world who are suffering continuous drought conditions. In the 22 years I've lived in this house I've never seen the ground so wet it is usually very dry.

Hematite
| |
Even though often called a crystal hematite is not a crystal, but a mineral (iron oxide). While many stones can look similar to an untrained eye, the heavy and shiny hematite has a distinctive presence that cannot be confused with any other stone. The name hematite derives it meaning from the greek word for blood. The reason for the origin of hematite's name can be twofold. Even though it is shiny black on the outside, if you break the stone (not an easy thing to do!) you will see that on the inside hematite has a deep blood red colour. Another reason for its name might be related to the high iron content found in hematite (almost 70%), which made hematite a popular healing stone for blood-related disorders. Because hematite has been used for such a long time, it has a wide variety of healing properties ascribed to it, from relieving leg cramps to alleviating fevers. The best way to find out the powers of hematite is to buy a stone and experiment yourself. Hematite is abundant, thus very affordable. Hematite clearly has a very strong grounding energy; you can feel that just by holding the stone in your hand. It also has a cooling and calming effect, as well as helps develop concentration and focus. Overall, hematite brings a quality of energy that is powerful, strong and grounding. It works with one's mind by calming it and clearing the unnecessary clutter. Most of the hematite sold on the market comes from Brazil, Venezuela, US and Canada. Hematite is used for its grounding, calming, as well as protective properties. Hematite can also be energizing (in a balanced kind of way), so you can often find it in feng shui jewelry.

Olive oil could reduce breast cancer
threat in high-risk women
27 January 2014 courtesy of WDDTY
An ingredient in olive oil may lower the chances of breast cancer in women who are at higher risk. The oil reduces the density of breast tissue, which can be a risk factor for the cancer.
The oil's active ingredient is hydroxytyrosol, which has reduced breast tissue density in laboratory tests on cell cultures.
Now researchers are beginning a year-long clinical trial on 100 women, half of whom are pre-menstrual and the remainder post-menopausal. The research team, from Houston Methodist Cancer Centre, will give all of the women a 25 mg capsule of hydroxytyrosol for a year to see if it can reduce breast tissue density.
A one per cent reduction in breast tissue translates into a two per cent reduction in risk, says lead researcher Tejal Patel.
Olive oil has many proven health benefits, and has already been shown to reduce the chances of heart disease, high blood pressure and even stroke. It is one of the most powerful antioxidants with no known toxic effects.

Wiltshire is the county for white horses. There are or were at least twenty-four of these hill figures in Britain, with no less than thirteen being in Wiltshire, and another white horse, the oldest of them all, being just over the border in Oxfordshire. Most of the white horses are chalk hill carvings, and the chalk downs of central Wiltshire make it an ideal place for such figures.
Of the thirteen white horses known to have existed in Wiltshire, eight are still visible, and the others have either been lost completely, or are in a sense still there, under the turf, but have long since become grown over and are no longer visible.
Contrary to popular belief, most white horses are not of great antiquity. Only the Uffington white horse is of certain prehistoric origin, being some three thousand years old. Most of the others date from the last three hundred years or so, though the hillside white horse can be a slippery creature, and the origins of some are impossible to establish with any certainty.
http://www.wiltshirewhitehorses.org.uk/
This site concentrates on the Wiltshire horses, but aims to include all known hillside white horses in Britain and elsewhere, and includes some which are not chalk hill carvings but have been created by other methods. It does not cover hill figures other than white horses.

Eucalyptus - A Modern Herbal. Mrs M Grieve 1931 Eucalyptus globulus (LABILLE.) Family: N.O. Myrtaceae
Synonyms---Blue Gum Tree. Stringy Bark Tree.
Part Used---The oil of the leaves. Habitat---Australia. Now North and South Africa, India, and Southern Europe
Eucalyptus trees are quick growers and many species reach a great height.
Eucalyptus amygdalin (Labille ) is the tallest known tree, specimens attaining as much as 480 feet, exceeding in height even the Californian Big Tree (
Sequoia gigantea). Many species yield valuable timber, others oils, kino, etc.
In Sicily, also, it is being extensively planted to combat malaria, on account of its property of absorbing large quantities of water from the soil.
The British Pharmacopoeia requires Eucalyptus Oil to contain not less than 55 per cent, by volume, of Eucalyptol, to have a specific gravity 0.910 to 0.930 and optical rotation -10 degrees to 10 degrees. The official method for the determination of the Eucalptol depends on the conversion of this body into a crystalline phosphate, but numerous other methods have been suggested (see Parry, Essential Oils,
Medicinal Action and Uses---Stimulant, antiseptic, aromatic.
The medicinal Eucalyptus Oil is probably the most powerful antiseptic of its class, especially when it is old, as ozone is formed in it on exposure to the air. It has decided disinfectant action, destroying the lower forms of life. Internally, it has the typical actions of a volatile oil in a marked degree.
Eucalyptus Oil is used as a stimulant and antiseptic gargle. Locally applied, it impairs sensibility. It increases cardiac action.
Its antiseptic properties confer some antimalarial action, though it cannot take the place of Cinchona.
In large doses, it acts as an irritant
A good ointment for the skin, containing antiseptic and healing properties. It produces very satisfactory results in scurf, chapped hands, chafes, dandruff, tender feet, enlargements of the glands, spots on the chest, arms, back and legs, pains in the joints and muscles.
Apply a piece of clean cotton or lint to wounds after all dirt is washed away. For aches and pains rub the part affected well and then cover with lint. Repeat two or three times, taking a blood-purifying mixture at the same time.

Note: probably my most used essential oil.

Birds & Creation
|

Myths from several regions associate birds with the creation of the world. One of several creation stories in ancient Egypt said that when land rose out of the primeval waters of chaos, the first deity to appear was a bird perching on that land. The Egyptians called the god the Benu bird and portrayed it as a long-legged, wading heron in the sun temple at Heliopolis. The Benu bird created the universe and then made gods and goddesses and men to live in that universe.
A number of creation myths from Southeast Asia feature birds. On the great island of Borneo dwell the Iban people, who tell of Ara and Irik, two bird spirits floating above an expanse of water at the beginning of time. Seizing two eggs from the water, Ara made the sky from one egg, while Irik made the earth from the other. As Irik squeezed the earth into its proper size, mountains and rivers appeared on its surface. Then the two creator spirits shaped bits of earth into the first people and woke them to life with bird cries.
Other creation stories begin with the laying of a cosmic egg from which the universe emerges. Indonesia, Polynesia, and the northern European countries of Finland and Estonia have stories of deities flying down to the primeval ocean to lay eggs that hatch into the world.
Birds appear in some myths as earth divers. An earth diver is an animal that plunged to the bottom of the primeval sea and brought up mud from which the earth was formed. Legends of the Buriat and Samoyed people of Siberia feature birds as earth divers. Water birds such as ducks or swans play this role in the creation myths of many Native American peoples, including the Mandan of North Dakota. A Navajo myth about a great flood tells that the people fled to an upper world, leaving everything behind. The bird Turkey then dived into the lower world to rescue seeds so that the people could grow food crops.

Compassion

E-cigarettes contain cancer-causing chemicals
03 February 2014 Courtesy of WDDTY
E-cigarettes seem like a safer option compared to the real thing, but they are unregulated products that contain at least 19 harmful chemicals, including several that are cancer-causing, a scientist has warned.
The e-cigarettes also contain propylene glycol, which produces the 'smoke', but is a hazard if inhaled. However, studies have never been carried out to see what harm it does to the lungs at the concentrations delivered by the products, although America's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health lists it as a risk and recommends immediate fresh air if it is inhaled.
Concerns about the fake cigarettes have been voiced by Philip McAndrew, of the Loyola University health system. He describes e-cigarettes as "a wolf in sheep's clothing" that needs to be regulated. "People think it's a safe alternative to cigarettes, but the reality is we really don't know," he said. One American city isn't waiting to find out. Chicago has decided to apply the same regulations to e-cigarettes as it already does to cigarettes. They are kept behind the counter and proof of age has to be produced.
McAndrew, who helps people quit smoking, says there are better ways of replacing cigarettes, especially as e-cigarettes are still delivering high quantities of nicotine to the body.

Sea Fever
John Masefield
I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a gray mist on the sea's face, and a gray dawn breaking.
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

My Amazon Kindle Books
The following eBooks that I have put together are all available on Amazon Kindle. Most are about $1.17 or 77p. The one with the asterisk is about $3.07 and £1.92 The UK price is governed by the dollar exchange rate so can fluctuate a little. I made the decision to price them very reasonably so they were accessible to all, preferring to sell lots for a little rather than at a premium rate. You don't need a Kindle as you can download to your PC and Amazon gives you the software immediately to do this. I was offering all these as eCourses and those who have bought them can still return your coursework to gain your Continued Professional Development (CPD) Point certificates. If any of you still wish to do any eCourses just contact me and we can arrange this.
