Newsletter December 2013

Dr Elizabeth Ann Diamond

We are fast approaching Yule and the end of 2013. I love the festive season, spending time with my friends and children not feeling that I should be working.  I don't really consider cooking and preparing food for the family is work, it is a joy.

We have been blessed with dry weather for a while.  For me frosty and cold is fine but damp, wet and overcast is not quite so welcome.

I have a few more dates when I will be offering my hand crafted jewellery and amulets for sale. Maybe I will see some of you but I can also post items of course. I've been enjoyed making up fused glass chakra pendants and ear rings.  Everything I make is full of channeled Universal energy and love.  Well I love making it so it cannot help but take this into it's fabric.

Seasons Greetings and

Many Blessings   Liz

The Mythology of Angels existed long before Judaism and Christianity.

Angels also are major figures in Buddhism and Hinduism. Celtic and Norse mythology. And in many Shamanistic legends. But not all of these call these entities "angels", just like not everyone refers to a prayer as a mantra, or a spell of protection a prayer, and so on. We all have our "labels" for what fundamentally are the same things.

The Buddhist for instance refer to angels as devas, or celestial beings. Some paths of Buddhism use the label dharmapalas or dharma protectors. In Tibetan Buddhism, devas are sometimes considered to be emanations of bodhisattvas or enlightened beings. Other paths of Buddhism have specific important devas, as they are often derived from pre-Buddhist cultures and religions and not from Buddhist philosophy itself. So these paths encorporated pre-Buddhist local or regional mythology into their Buddhist paths long ago.

Hinduism has many different types of spiritual beings who act in a similar capacity to Angels. One example are the minor gods, or devas, refered to as the "shining ones". They inhabit the higher astral plane of the divine world. Gods, devas, planets like Sani (Saturn), gurus (teachers), and ancestors can all play a protective role for humans. The Asuras are also a component of Hinduism. They are also refered to as evil spirits or demons. They are fallen devas who inhabit the lower astral plane, the mental plane of existence. Much like the fallen angels outlined in Christian philosophy. If an Asuras does a good dead, they can be reincarnated into devas and do not have to remain eternally in the lower plane. Hinduism also includes Apsaras, who are heavenly nymphs, who preside over sacrifices, and lipika, who regulate karma. Devas and asuras can inspire or bring down aspirants, helping or hindering people on their spiritual journey.

In Norse mythology the equivalent angels are the Valkyries who were originally sinister spirits of slaughter, dark angels of death who soared over the battlefields like birds of prey, carrying out a warriors fate in the name of Odin. They chose the heroes of the battle and took them away to Valhalla, the heavenly home of honor for Odin's ghostly army. In later Norse mythology, the Valkyries were romanticized as Odin's Shield-Maidens, virgins with golden hair and snowy arms who served the chosen heroes everlasting mead and meat in the great hall of Valhalla. They also soared over the battlefield as lovely swan-maidens or splendid mounted Amazons. This was portrayed in the Volsung Saga and Niebelungenlied, where the heroine Brynhild was a beautiful fallen Valkyrie.

TREE OF LIFE

I have many of my beautiful crystal Trees of Life available @£7.50 plus £1 P&P see the website for pictures.

The Tree of Life symbol meaning represents different qualities/virtues like wisdom, strength, protection, beauty, bounty and redemption. It is also considered to be the symbol of the 'Creator'. The tree is associated with the creator because it provides protection, supports abundant fruit production and thereby, regeneration. This analogy can also be used to describe the life of humans. We as humans develop 'roots' of our beliefs, 'branch out' by means of wisdom and the 'trunk' (mind & body) keeps them connected.

The Tree of Life meaning as perceived in different faiths, belief systems and cultures, resonates with a simple and strong message of unity. The Tree of Life symbol indicates that all forms of life are connected through a cosmic energy and that we as humans should live in harmony with rest of the living beings.

Birthstones

So many people ask what birthstones apply for different months I've included this chart.  For a much more comprehensive list have a look at the website below.

Note: Most of my training in Naturopathic Nutritional Medicine and psychology emanated from the USA which is why it is often the source of my information.  This is an excellent website.

11 per cent of US children diagnosed with ADHD

Around 11 per cent of all children in the US have been diagnosed with ADHD (attention-deficit, hyperactivity disorder), an increase of 42 per cent in eight years. Today, 6.4 million children aged between four and 17 have the learning or behavioural problem. More than 3.5 million of the children-which is 70 per cent of all children with an ADHD diagnosis-are taking a powerful stimulant such as Ritalin for the disorder, an increase of 28 per cent on previous figures for 2007. Around half the children are diagnosed by the time they reach the age of six, say researchers from America's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), although the more severe cases are usually identified by the time the child reaches the age of four. Their latest figures reveal that two million more children in the US have been diagnosed with ADHD since 2003, and another million are taking ADHD medication. However, diagnosis seems to vary between US states. Diagnosis rates range from 15 per cent of all children in Arkansas and Kentucky down to just 4 per cent in Nevada. There are millions of people in the world

and spirit will see that most of them,

you never have to meet.

But there are one or two you are tied to,

and spirit will cross you back and forth,

threading so many knots until they catch

and you finally get it right....

Mistletoe Courtesy of A Modern Herbal by Margaret Grieve 1931

Botanical: Viscum album (LINN.)
Family: N.O. Loranthaceae

Synonyms-Birdlime Mistletoe. Herbe de la Croix. Mystyldene. Lignum Crucis.
Parts Used-Leaves and young twigs, berries.

The well-known Mistletoe is an evergreen parasitic plant, growing on the branches of trees, where it forms pendent bushes, 2 to 5 feet in diameter. It will grow and has been found on almost any deciduous tree, preferring those with soft bark, and being, perhaps, commonest on old Apple trees, though it is frequently found on the Ash, Hawthorn, Lime and other trees. On the Oak, it grows very seldom. It has been found on the Cedar of Lebanon and on the Larch, but very rarely on the Pear tree.

Mistletoe is always produced by seed and cannot be cultivated in the earth like other plants, hence the ancients considered it to be an excrescence of the tree. By rubbing the berries on the smooth bark of the underside of the branches of trees till they adhere, or inserting them in clefts made for the purpose, it is possible to grow Mistletoe quite successfully, if desired.

The thrush is the great disseminator of the Mistletoe, devouring the berries eagerly, from which the Missel Thrush is said by some to derive its name. The stems and foliage have been given to sheep in winter, when fodder was scarce, and they are said to eat it with relish.

Mistletoe was held in great reverence by the Druids. They went forth clad in white robes to search for the sacred plant, and when it was discovered, one of the Druids ascended the tree and gathered it with great ceremony, separating it from the Oak with a golden knife. The Mistletoe was always cut at a particular age of the moon, at the beginning of the year, and it was only sought for when the Druids declared they had visions directing them to seek it. When a great length of time elapsed without this happening, or if the Mistletoe chanced to fall to the ground, it was considered as an omen that some misfortune would befall the nation. The Druids held that the Mistletoe protected its possessor from all evil, and that the oaks on which it was seen growing were to be respected because of the wonderful cures which the priests were able to effect with it. They sent round their attendant youth with branches of the Mistletoe to announce the entrance of the New Year. It is probable that the custom of including it in the decoration of our homes at Christmas, giving it a special place of honour, is a survival of this old custom.

Parts Used Medicinally

The leaves and young twigs, collected just before the berries form, and dried in the same manner as described for Holly.

Mistletoe contains mucilage, sugar, a fixed oil, resin, an odorous principle, some tannin and various salts. The active part of the plant is the resin, Viscin, which by fermentation becomes a yellowish, sticky, resinous mass, which can be used with success as a birdlime.

The preparations ordinarily used are a fluid extract and the powdered leaves. A homoeopathic tincture is prepared with spirit from equal quantities of the leaves and ripe berries, but is difficult of manufacture, owing to the viscidity of the sap

.

Medicinal Action and Uses Nervine, antispasmodic, tonic and narcotic. Has a greatreputation for curing the 'falling sickness' epilepsy - and other convulsive nervous disorders. It has also been employed in checking internal haemorrhage.

The physiological effect of the plant is to lessen and temporarily benumb such nervous action as is reflected to distant organs of the body from some central organ which is the actual seat of trouble. In this way the spasms of epilepsy and of other convulsive distempers are allayed. Large doses of the plant, or of its berries, would, on the contrary, aggravate these convulsive disorders. Young children have been attacked with convulsions after eating freely of the berries.

Country people use the berries to cure severe stitches in the side. The birdlime of the berries is also employed by them as an application to ulcers and sores

.

It is stated that in Sweden, persons afflicted with epilepsy carry about with them a knife having a handle of Oak Mistletoe to ward off attacks.

Do not experiment with mistletoe get the advice of a herbalist or homoeopath.

My Amazon Kindle Books

I am working on a new eBook on Simple Herbal and other Natural Remedies.  This will be the biggest that I have produced.

The following eBooks that I have put together are all available on Amazon Kindle.  Most are about $1.17 or 77p.  The one  with the asterisk is about $3.07 and £1.92 The UK price is governed by the dollar exchange rate so can fluctuate a little. I made the decision to price them very reasonably so they were accessible to all, preferring to sell lots for a little rather than at a premium rate.  You don't need a Kindle as you can download to your PC and Amazon gives you the software immediately to do this. I was offering all  these as eCourses and those who have bought them can still return your coursework to gain your Continued Professional Development (CPD) Point certificates.  If any of you still wish to do any eCourses just contact me and we can arrange this.
