Greetings!

The Chinese New Year is upon us and I always feel this is a very exciting time as the energy shifts from the last year onto the new one.

I have featured fennel seeds this month, I may have featured fennel before but it is one of my favourites.,   especially delicious with fresh pineapple.

We are fast approaching the first Festival of Light for this year, stands are sold out but I am keeping a reserve list as sometimes participants have to drop out.

Until the 18th February I am taking some time out so if I don't respond immediately that is the reason.

Don't forget the archive of these Newsletters which can be accessed from any of my websites.

Chinese New Year
- Sunday 10th February

Chinese Snake

Welcome to Year of the Water Snake! Snake is the Yin to last year's Dragon Yang. That said, Snake does not settle for mediocrity, either. We're likely to see significant developments in the area of science and technology this year. Research and development are apt to flourish. This is a Water year as well, the element most closely associated with education and research, making 2013 a very special year for scientists and scholars. Snake is a great sign, a positive one, with energy that can help us face all of the challenges ahead of us. Let's take advantage of this vibrant influence to improve our lives -- and our world!

LOVE

The beginning of love is
to let those we love be perfectly themselves,

and not to twist them to fit our own image.

Otherwise we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them.

Immune system is best cancer fighter, 'milestone' research confirms

Taken from What the Doctors Don't Tell You (WDDTY)

It's something we've been saying for years, and now leading researchers are joining in: a healthy immune system is the best way to beat cancer.  In fact, the 'war on cancer' will never be won if we rely solely on chemotherapy, they say in a new research paper hailed as 'a milestone of cancer research'.

A research team at the University Medical Centre Tubingen has demonstrated and proved that the immune system has the capability to drive tumours and cancerous cells into a state of permanent dormancy.

This means that immunotherapy-where the immune system is bolstered in order to fight the cancer-is an effective cancer therapy, and does so without destroying any cells, say the researchers, led by Prof Dr Martin Rocken.  Instead, it causes senescence, or life-long dormancy, in cancerous cells, and stops the cancer spreading.

"It is very likely that we can't win the 'war on cancer' by exclusive military means.  Instead, it will be an important milestone to restore the bodies' immune control of malignant tumours," said Prof Rocken.

'Military means' include chemotherapy, the standard response to cancer, which destroys the immune system.

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others,
even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your career, however humble;

it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;

many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be critical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,

gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
 But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
 Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

 You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars;

you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
 no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,

in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be careful. Strive to be happy.

The Albatross

Black Browed Albatross
Black Browed Albatross

People often use the bird word albatross figuratively. Something that causes worry or trouble can be called an albatross. And a colorful way of expressing the idea that one has a serious problem is to say that there is an albatross around one's neck.

Why did the albatross, instead of some other bird, develop a reputation leading to its use in this figurative expression? How did the expression itself start? What truths, half-truths, and myths blended together to create the expression albatross around one's neck?

There was also a belief that albatrosses, hovering endlessly above the ships at sea, contained the souls of lost sailors, former comrades of the sailors below. Many sailors believed that disaster or death would haunt anyone who harmed or killed the bird.

Despite those widespread beliefs, some sailors did, in fact, kill and eat albatrosses. Captain James Cook, for example, recorded some kills during his own voyages. On December 24, 1768, he wrote, "We shot an albatross, which measured between the tips of its wings nine feet and an inch." On January 26, 1769, he wrote, "The Albatrosses proved very good eating."

In 1798 the great English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge made albatross mythology the basis for his famous poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The Ancient Mariner (that is, the "old seaman") tells the story of how he, while on a ship at sea, killed an albatross for no apparent reason. Later the wind stopped blowing, and the ship could not reach port to get fresh water.

The crew assumed that the disastrous turn of events occurred because of the death of the albatross. Angry at the Ancient Mariner, the crew picked up the dead bird and hung it around the man's neck as a symbol of guilt and punishment. The profound intent of the symbolism was reflected in the Ancient Mariner's own words: "Instead of the cross, the albatross / About my neck was hung."

Fennel Seeds

A Modern Herbal, first published in 1931, by Mrs. M. Grieve

 Fennel Seeds

Fennel will thrive anywhere, and a plantation will last for years. It is easily propagated by seeds, sown early in April in ordinary soil. It likes plenty of sun and is adapted to dry and sunny situations, not needing heavily manured ground, though it will yield more on rich stiff soil. From 4 1/2 to 5 lb. of seed are sown per acre, either in drills, 15 inches apart, lightly, just covered with soil and the plants afterwards thinned to a similar distance, or sewn thinly in a bed and transplanted when large enough. The fruit is heavy and a crop of 15 cwt. per acre is an average yield.

The odour of Fennel seed is fragrant, its taste, warm, sweet and agreeably aromatic. It yields its virtues to hot water, but more freely to alcohol. The essential oil may be separated by distillation with water.

On account of its aromatic and carminative properties, Fennel fruit is chiefly used medicinally with purgatives to allay their tendency to griping and for this purpose forms one of the ingredients of the well-known compound Liquorice Powder. Fennel water has properties similar to those of anise and dill water: mixed with sodium bicarbonate and syrup, these waters constitute the domestic 'Gripe Water,' used to correct the flatulence of infants. Volatile oil of Fennel has these properties in concentration.

Fennel tea, formerly also employed as a carminative, is made by pouring half a pint of boiling water on a teaspoonful of bruised Fennel seeds.

Syrup prepared from Fennel juice was formerly given for chronic coughs.

Fennel is also largely used for cattle condiments.

It is one of the plants which is said to be disliked by fleas, and powdered Fennel has the effect of driving away fleas from kennels and stables. The plant gives off ozone most readily.

Culpepper says:

'One good old custom is not yet left off, viz., to boil fennel with fish, for it consumes the phlegmatic humour which fish most plentifully afford and annoy the body with, though few that use it know wherefore they do it. It benefits this way, because it is a herb of Mercury, and under Virgo, and therefore bears antipathy to Pisces. Fennel expels wind, provokes urine, and eases the pains of the stone, and helps to break it. The leaves or seed boiled in barley water and drunk, are good for nurses, to increase their milk and make it more wholesome for the child. The leaves, or rather the seeds, boiled in water, stayeth the hiccup and taketh away nausea or inclination to sickness. The seed and the roots much more help to open obstructions of the liver, spleen, and gall, and thereby relieve the painful and windy swellings of the spleen, and the yellow jaundice, as also the gout and cramp. The seed is of good use in medicines for shortness of breath and wheezing, by stoppings of the lungs. The roots are of most use in physic, drinks and broths, that are taken to cleanse the blood, to open obstructions of the liver, to provoke urine, and amend the ill colour of the face after sickness, and to cause a good habit through the body; both leaves, seeds, and roots thereof, are much used in drink, or broth, to make people more lean that are too fat. A decoction of the leaves and root is good for serpent bites, and to neutralize vegetable poison, as mushrooms, etc.'

Note: I love fennel of all types especially the seeds but I am unable to grow enough each year so I buy from the company below.

Seeds, Spices and much more

Looking for a good supplier of seeds and spices? I can highly recommend
www.healthysupplies.co.uk not only do they offer a huge selection of high quality seeds, spices, beans etc they also offer a mass of information on their website.  They are also very efficient and reasonably priced. I often receive my order the next day.  No I am not on commission, and have not been asked for a 'plug' this is simply credit where credit is due.

I visited a so called Health Food Shop in America and I was very surprised to see shelves full of pots and bottles of expensive tablets, powder and liquids.  Supplements etc and not even a sniff of anything that I would call food.

Insulin therapy major cause of death in type 2 diabetics

Insulin, the standard treatment for people with type 2 diabetes, increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, researchers have discovered this week.

In the last few years, insulin has become a popular option for diabetics suffering from type 2, which has often been classified as the 'lifestyle disease' as it can be brought on by bad diet and a lack of exercise.

Early reports found that insulin use by type 2 diabetics tripled the risk of death, and now researchers from Cardiff University have discovered the deaths are caused by heart attack, stroke and kidney failure.

It's always been the major treatment option for people suffering from type 1 diabetes, when the body cannot naturally produce insulin to break down sugars in foods, although the researchers don't know if it increases death in this group.

Note: This has been known for a while and it is not first time I've come across this information. My own mother died from a stroke, she had used insulin for many years. I have Diabetes Mellitus Type 11 myself which I why I continue to study and apply my findings to myself,  One of my Kindle eBooks below contains much of my research.

My Amazon Kindle Books

The following eBooks that I have put together are all available on Amazon Kindle.  Most are either $1.23 or 77p.  The one  with the asterisk is $3.07 and £1.92 The UK price is governed by the dollar exchange rate so can fluctuate a little. I made the decision to price them very reasonably so they were accessible to all, preferring to sell lots for a little rather than at a premium rate.  You don't need a Kindle as you can download to your PC and Amazon gives you the software immediately to do this. I was offering all  these as eCourses and those who have bought them can still return your coursework to gain your Continued Professional Development (CPD) Point certificates.  If any of you still wish to do any eCourses just contact me and we can arrange this.
