Greetings!
I've been having a lot of problems putting this Newsletter together as the American company I use has been affected by the storms etc down the East coast of America. I have been unable to post three lovely photos and I cannot get the colours I want or add blocks so this one must go partially complete.
I am preparing for the Gift Fayre on Saturday 10th November followed by a Regression Workshop in Weston-super-Mare. Details below. There will also be a firework display in the evening if you are around. These are quite spectacular as they are reflected in the lake and sea on the sea front.

New Gemstone Pendants
I've bought a new larger kiln for my fused glass and have been experimenting with various glass to see how it fires. Brilliant results so far, I will start making some brooches soon as well. I have a vast stock of fused glass, crystal and gemstone pendants, gemstone necklaces, Tibetan Silver pendants, charm bracelets, ear rings, kilt pins, key rings, magnetic hematite bracelets and necklaces plus much more at very reasonable prices. Hummingbirds
|
Hummingbirds are found only in the western hemisphere, so they are absent from the traditional fairy tales, legends, and myths of European and African Americans. There is, however, a rich supply of stories about these tiny birds in Native American mythology.
A Mayan legend says the hummingbird is actually the sun in disguise, and he is trying to court a beautiful woman, who is the moon.
There is a legend from the Jatibonicu Taino Tribal Nation of Puerto Rico about a young woman and a young man, who were from rival tribes. Like Romeo and Juliet, they fell in love, precipitating the intense criticism of their family and friends. Nevertheless, the two of them found a way to escape both time and culture. One became a hummingbird and the other a red flower. The Taino Indians also take the hummingbird to be a sacred pollinator, whose mission is to bring an abundance of new life.

Lavender
A Modern Herbal 1931 by Margaret Grieve
Lavender is a shrubby plant indigenous to the mountainous regions of the countries bordering the western half of the Mediterranean, and cultivated extensively for its aromatic flowers in various parts of France, in Italy and in England and even as far north as Norway. It is also now being grown as a perfume plant in Australia. All the forms of Lavender are much visited by bees and prove a good source of honey.
Lavender was used in earlier days as a condiment and for flavouring dishes 'to comfort the stomach.' Gerard speaks of Conserves of Lavender being served at table.
It has aromatic, carminative and nervine properties, occurring occasionally in pharmacy to cover disagreeable odours in ointments and other compounds. Outwardly applied, it relieves toothache, neuralgia, sprains, and rheumatism. In hysteria, palsy and similar disorders of debility and lack of nerve power, Lavender will act as a powerful stimulant.
The oil is successfully used in the treatment of sores, varicose ulcers, burns and scalds. In France, it is a regular thing for most households to keep a bottle of Essence of Lavender as a domestic remedy against bruises, bites and trivial aches and pains, both external and internal.
Lavender oil is also used in veterinary practice, being very efficacious in killing lice and other parasites on animals. The oil is used in the embalming of corpses to a steadily increasing extent.
Not only are insects averse to the smell of Lavender, so that oil of Lavender rubbed on the skin will prevent midge and mosquito bites. The 'straw,' completely freed from the flowers, is sold and used as litter and also for making ointment. If burnt, for deodorizing purposes, the stalks diffuse a powerful, but agreeable odour.

ANTS
Ants are a lot like warriors: They march in columns; they show unbounded courage. No matter how large their foe, they still attack. No matter how many of their number are killed, they will not surrender or retreat. An ant that is decapitated will continue to bite at its adversary. For their size, ants are the strongest creatures in the world, able to carry objects many times larger than themselves. According to another myth, Zeus changed himself into an ant to make love to the maiden Eurymedusa in Thessaly. She gave birth to a child named Myrmidon, ancestor of the martial race. The efficient Myrmidons not only prevailed in war but also prospered in peace. Like ants, they would diligently work the soil. Ants have regular access to the mysterious depths of the earth, where metals and jewels are found. Herodotus told of ants in India that were larger than foxes. As they burrowed in the ground, these ants threw up huge heaps of sand that contained gold. The Indians watched from a distance, then quickly packed the sand into bags and carried them away on camels. The treasure hunters had to rely on surprise in these raids, since the ants were extremely swift in pursuit.
