RESERVOIRS IN GOOD SHAPE AS WE HEAD INTO FALL
|
As we head into fall, we are pleased to report that our reservoirs continue to do well. Our current storage of 62,524 acre-feet is 114% of average for September 27.
At the same time, we are still awaiting the first measurable rain of the season, and since we don't know what this rainfall year will bring, using water wisely is always important. Thank you for continuing to conserve and for spreading our conservation message.
Here are the latest water statistics:
- Reservoir Levels - As of September 27, reservoir storage is 62,524 acre-feet,* or 79% of capacity. The average for this date is 54,910 acre-feet, or 69% of capacity.
- Rainfall - Rainfall this year to date (July 1 - September 27, 2016) is 0.00 inches. Average for the same period is 0.62 inches; last year on this date we had 0.81 inches.
- Water Use - Water use for the week ending September 27 averaged 26.52 million gallons per day, compared to last year when water use for the week was 24.11 million gallons per day.
- Creek Releases - During the month of August 2016 MMWD released 289 million gallons, or 887 acre-feet, into Lagunitas and Walker creeks in west Marin for habitat enhancement.
Visit our Water Watch webpage for daily updates. *One acre-foot is 325,851 gallons

DRAFT BIODIVERSITY, FIRE, AND FUELS INTEGRATED PLAN
|
The Draft Biodiversity, Fire, and Fuels Integrated Plan (BFFIP) is now available for review on the district's website: marinwater.org/BFFIPThe plan describes actions that MMWD will take to minimize fire hazards and maximize ecological health on its watershed lands.
The Mt. Tamalpais, Nicasio Reservoir and Soulajule Reservoir watersheds constitute approximately 22,000 acres of publicly accessible wildlands characterized by both high wildfire risk and high biological diversity. The BFFIP builds on the success of the 1995 Vegetation Management Plan and does not include the use of herbicides for vegetation management.

PIPELINE REPLACEMENT PROJECTS AROUND THE COUNTY
|
In an ongoing effort to improve our water infrastructure, we have numerous pipeline replacement projects happening around Marin County. The list below contains information on our current replacement projects:
- Forest Knolls Pipeline Replacement Project: MMWD will replace 100-year-old pipe in the unincorporated community of Forest Knolls in the San Geronimo Valley from September to January. Streets impacted include Morelos Avenue, Juarez Avenue, Ramona Avenue and Rosario Road.
- San Rafael Fire Flow Improvement Project: From September to January, MMWD will replace 2,800 feet of dated and fire-flow-deficient cast iron pipeline in San Rafael. Streets impacted include Hepburn Heights Road, Fifth Avenue and Scenic Avenue.
- Terra Linda Pipeline Replacement Project: Running August through February, this project will replace 6,440 feet of pipeline on Duran Drive, Pine Lane, Holly Drive, Hickory Lane and Hibiscus Way in Terra Linda.
- Cross Marin Trail Culvert Repairs: The Cross Marin Trail is closed through October so crews can replace a failed culvert and improve fish passage.
- Kentfield and San Rafael Pipeline Replacement Project: MMWD is replacing 2,130 feet of pipeline on Stadium Way in Kentfield, Cala Vista Drive, G Street, Broadview Drive and Brodea Way in San Rafael to improve fireflow and seismic reliability. This project will be completed in October.

Fall is a great time for landscaping projects: Shorter days, cooler temperatures and winter rains on the way mean new plantings don't need as much supplemental watering to get established. MMWD Water Conservation Specialist Christina Mountanos offers some ideas and resources for your fall garden projects. - This month our Marin-Friendly Virtual Garden Tour features two inspiring garden makeovers: In the first, an unwanted lawn was transformed into a beautiful spiraling pathway. In the second, a once-upon-a-time swimming pool has become a meadow bursting with Marin native plants.
