RESERVOIRS FILLING UP AS STORMS KEEP ROLLING IN
MMWD's reservoirs are now above average and still filling thanks to this winter's series of storms. The entire state is getting a boost thanks to El Niņo; however, state water restrictions are still in effect and MMWD customers are doing their part to cut back.

Here are the latest water statistics:
  • Reservoir Levels - As of January 21, reservoir storage is 74,884 acre-feet,* or 94% of capacity. The average for this date is 63,705 acre-feet, or 80% of capacity.
  • Rainfall - Rainfall this year to date (July 1, 2015 - January 21, 2016) is 28.79 inches. Average for the same period is 26.26 inches; last year on this date we had 31.43 inches.
  • Water Use - Water use for the week ending January 21 averaged 13.9 million gallons per day, compared to 16.27 million gallons per day for the same week last year.
  • Creek Releases - During the month of December 2015 MMWD released 444 million gallons, or 1,363 acre-feet, into Lagunitas and Walker creeks in west Marin for habitat enhancement.

NEW BOARD OFFICERS ELECTED FOR 2016
Director Cynthia Koehler of Mill Valley is the newly elected president of the MMWD Board of Directors for 2016 and Director Larry Russell of Tiburon is the vice president.

Koehler is the executive director and co-founder of Water Now, a non-profit dedicated to sustainable water solutions at the community level. Koehler has 20-plus years' experience in Western water law and policy development with such organizations as the Environmental Defense Fund and Save San Francisco Bay Association. Koehler received The Bay Institute's Hero of the Bay Award in 2013 and the Marin Conservation League's Ted Wellman Water Award in 2011. She is a graduate of Pomona College and the University of Oregon School of Law.

Russell has a doctorate in civil/environmental engineering from the University of California, Berkeley and is a licensed professional civil, chemical, and corrosion engineer with more than 30 years of technical experience in water management and conservation. Russell is a life member of the American Water Works Association and the Water Environment Federation and is the chair of the Corrosion Committee of the International Water Association. In 2015 Russell was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Alumni of the University of California, Berkeley Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

MMWD's five-member board of directors also includes Director Larry Bragman of Fairfax, Director Armando Quintero of San Rafael, and Director Jack Gibson of Sleepy Hollow.

MMWD WATER USERS CONTINUE TO MEET STATE REDUCTION GOAL
MMWD customers reduced their water use by 24% in December 2015 compared to the same month in 2013. Cumulative savings for June through December is 21.5%, surpassing the 20% target for MMWD set by the state.

While it may be tempting to ease up on conservation efforts with the arrival of El Niņo, the nine-month reporting period continues through February 2016 so reduced water use is still needed. In fact, Governor Brown may extend the executive order through October 2016; the State Water Resources Control Board will vote on the matter in February. Fortunately, saving water now will help ensure an adequate supply this coming summer and beyond, regardless of state actions.

NEW WATER RATES NOW IN EFFECT
New rates are in effect for water use as of January 1, 2016. The new rates will be reflected in water bills issued on or after March 1, 2016.

The new rate structure includes the following changes:
  • An increase in the bi-monthly fixed service charge based on meter size for all customers;
  • The establishment of a new bi-monthly watershed management fee based on meter size for all customers;
  • Adjustments to the tier rates for all customers.
MMWD has two discounted rate programs for qualifying low income or medically disabled customers: the Service Charge Waiver Program and the Medical Disability Discount. More information about both programs is available on this page.

This is MMWD's first rate increase since May 2012. The new rates are based on a 2015 cost-of-service analysis, an in-depth study conducted to ensure costs are allocated accurately and fairly among all customers.

An additional 4% increase across all water service rates, fees, and charges will go into effect May 1, 2016 and will be reflected in water bills issued on or after July 1, 2016 subject to board review in April 2016.
