WATER USE DOWN; RESERVOIR LEVELS STABLE
Thanks to customer conservation efforts, water use for the month of June to date has been well below 2014 levels. For the week ending June 25, 2015, for example, water use was 23.40 million gallons compared to 28.78 for the same week in 2014.

Water use reduction requests from the state are in effect for June 2015 through February 2016, but they actually compare water use to 2013 instead of 2014. We will report our official numbers to the state in mid-July for the month of June 2015 and we will also share that figure with customers. So far it looks like we are on track to meet our reduction target of 20%.

Visit our Water Watch page for daily water use updates and our drought information page for drought-related updates.

Here are the latest water statistics:
  • Reservoir Levels - As of June 25, reservoir storage is 67,629 acre-feet,* or 85% of capacity. The average for this date is 66,903 acre-feet, or 84% of capacity.
  • Rainfall - Rainfall this year to date (July 1, 2014 - June 25, 2015) is 39.82 inches. Average for the same period is 52.59 inches; last year on this date we had 33.40 inches.
  • Water Use - Water use for the week ending June 25 averaged 23.40 million gallons per day, down from 28.78 million gallons per day for the same week last year.
  • Creek Releases - During the month of May 2015 MMWD released 365 million gallons, or 1,121 acre-feet, into Lagunitas and Walker creeks in west Marin for habitat enhancement.

BOARD APPROVES NEW CONTRACT FOR RUSSIAN RIVER WATER

On June 2 the MMWD Board of Directors approved an
amendment to the district's long-standing water supply agreement with the Sonoma County Water Agency (SCWA) that allows the district to continue receiving Russian River water for the next 10 years and beyond. Water imported from the Russian River has been a critical component of MMWD's water supply for 40 years and is complementary to MMWD's reservoir water and recycled water sources. Russian River water now provides approximately 25% of the water we consume each year.

The updated agreements approved by both MMWD and SCWA become effective July 1, 2015, remain in effect until June 30, 2025, and are to be renewed upon the request of the district for agreed-upon periods of time. MMWD is provided with a firm annual water supply of 14,300 acre-feet* based on the agreements.

The agreements can be found in Item 8 of the packet for the June 2, 2015 board meeting.

MMWD TRIMS BUDGET FOR 2015/16 FISCAL YEAR

On June 16 the MMWD Board of Directors adopted operating and capital budgets for the 2015/16 fiscal year (FY) that are lower than the budgets for the 2014/15 fiscal year, which ends June 30. The FY 2016 operating budget of $66.8 million shows a 2.3% decrease, while the capital budget of $28 million is down by 12.9%.

The lower expenditures reflect the drop in water sales and revenue resulting from customers' successful conservation efforts. While conservation is essential to preserving our limited water supply, the fluctuation in water sales is a challenge for the district since most of our expenses are fixed. MMWD must maintain more than 900 miles of pipe, numerous storage tanks, and pump stations regardless of the volume of water flowing through them.

Because MMWD operates on a two-year budget cycle, the board also adopted the 2016/17 FY operating and capital budgets. Both are slightly higher and therefore assume an improved revenue picture next year. The two-year budget is available online.

Approximately 80% of our budget goes directly toward the cost of our water system--that is, the collection, treatment, and distribution of water, and the maintenance and replacement of facilities. The remaining 20% goes toward protecting watershed lands, conservation programs, and customer services.
