NOVEMBER RAINS ARRIVE RIGHT ON TIME
The Mt. Tamalpais Watershed received a welcome 2.29 inches of rain over November 19 and 20, bringing the rainfall year total to date (since July 1) to 4.93 inches. More rain is in the forecast for Saturday, November 22. However, with only one week of November remaining, it is unlikely we will reach even the monthly average rainfall of 5.76 inches, let alone the year-to-date average of 7.4 inches.

Even so, MMWD's reservoir levels are 94% of average for this date.

Here are the current water statistics:
  • Reservoir Levels - As of November 21, reservoir storage is 48,126 acre-feet,* or 60% of capacity. The average for this date is 51,096 acre-feet, or 64% of capacity. Total capacity is 79,566 acre-feet.
  • Rainfall - Rainfall this year to date (July 1- November 21) is 4.93 inches. Average for the same period is 7.4 inches.
  • Water Use - Water use for the week of November 10-16 averaged 18.97 million gallons per day, compared to 24.61 million gallons per day for the same week last year.
  • Creek Releases - During the month of October 2014 MMWD released 173 million gallons, or 530 acre-feet, into Lagunitas and Walker creeks in west Marin for habitat enhancement.

Water use and reservoir figures are updated weekly and can be found on our Water Watch page.

*One acre-foot is 325,851 gallons

MMWD RECEIVES $1.3 MILLION IN STATE GRANTS FOR WATER CONSERVATION
MMWD has been awarded $1,313,000 in California state grant funding to support the district's water conservation efforts. MMWD's grant will fund a water-efficient irrigation project and an expansion of the district's rebate programs.

The grant is among more than $200 million in Proposition 84 grants awarded statewide in November to alleviate drought impacts and improve regional drought preparedness. Funding for the grant comes from Proposition 84, the Safe Drinking Water, Water Quality and Supply, Flood Control, River and Coastal Protection Bond Act, approved by voters in 2006 and administered by the Department of Water Resources. Learn more about the state grant program.

BOARD INCREASES RATE STABILIZATION FUND
At the November 18 meeting of the MMWD Board of Directors the board voted to set aside $4.9 million from operating reserves from the 2013/14 fiscal year to boost the district's rate stabilization fund, making the funds available in the 2014/15 fiscal year. Created in 2012 as part of the issuance of revenue bonds, this fund allows the district to set aside gross revenue from one year to be used in the calculation to meet the district's annual debt service ratio in any future year and to be used for any other lawful purpose.

Transferring the $4.9 million increases the balance of the rate stabilization fund to $7.3 million. The unrestricted/undesignated reserve fund balance is $21 million.

TAMALPAIS LANDS COLLABORATIVE LAUNCHES NEW "ONE TAM" WEBSITE

Earlier this year MMWD was one of four local public land managers to join forces with a non-profit for the benefit of Mt. Tamalpais. An innovative and integrated approach to the stewardship of public lands, the Tamalpais Lands Collaborative (TLC) combines the resources, skills, and expertise of MMWD, the National Park Service, California State Parks, Marin County Parks, and the nonprofit Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. The purpose of the new collaboration is to maintain the long-term health and preservation of the nearly 10 square miles of local, state, and national lands that encompass the Mt. Tam region.

Now, the TLC has launched OneTam to build community involvement by engaging more volunteers in caring for Mt. Tam's resources and renewing the spirit of philanthropy fundamental to the preservation of the mountain for the past 100 years.

MMWD'S FORBES HILL RESERVOIR IN SAN RAFAEL RECEIVING $3.8 MILLION OVERHAUL

MMWD is in the process of upgrading Forbes Hill Reservoir, one of Marin County's oldest treated water storage facilities, in order to extend its useful life beyond the current 120 years. Forbes Hill Reservoir, located on a hilltop in west San Rafael, was built in 1894 by one of MMWD's predecessors, the Marin County Water Company. The upgrade involves the installation of a new liner and an aluminum roof, which will extend the useful life of the reservoir, provide increased protection for the water supply, improve worker safety, and reduce maintenance.

Preliminary work on this project began in July. In October MMWD took the reservoir out of service to allow for the major construction work to be completed during the winter months when overall water consumption is at its lowest. The project will be completed in May 2015. Learn more about this project.
