CUSTOMERS CONTINUE TO CONSERVE
Ten months after the governor, and then MMWD, asked for reductions in water use, MMWD customers continue to respond well. Average consumption for mid-October 2014 was approximately 25% lower than it was last year. The total water savings achieved since the beginning of the year have helped to keep our reservoirs at close to normal levels.

Here are the current water statistics:
  • Reservoir Levels - As of October 19, reservoir storage is 49,579 acre-feet,* or 62% of capacity. The average for this date is 52,290 acre-feet, or 66% of capacity. Total capacity is 79,566 acre-feet.
  • Rainfall - Rainfall this year to date (July 1- October 19) is 1.12 inches. Average for the same period is 2.33 inches.
  • Water Use - Water use for the week of October 13-19 averaged 21.98 million gallons per day, compared to 27.86 million gallons per day for the same week last year.
  • Creek Releases - During the month of September 2014 MMWD released 160 million gallons, or 490 acre-feet, into Lagunitas and Walker creeks in west Marin for habitat enhancement.

Water use and reservoir figures are updated weekly and can be found on our Water Watch page.

INNOVATIVE REBATE PROGRAM STARTS OCTOBER 25
Rebates: Get Paid to Save
A new water conservation rebate program that begins October 25 could put up to $250 in customers' pockets.

Under the new program MMWD will offer rebates up to $50 each for pool covers, hot water recirculating systems, organic mulch, laundry-to- landscape graywater system components, and rain barrels. Customers will be able to pick and choose the product categories that make sense for their homes, and can purchase all five, qualifying for a total rebate of up to $250. Single-family and duplex residential customers are eligible.

More information can be found online here. Rebates on high-efficiency toilets, high-efficiency clothes washers, and smart irrigation controllers continue to be available.

HELP SPREAD THE WORD WITH THESE NEW DROUGHT CONSERVATION MATERIALS

We have new stickers, fliers, and posters in English and Spanish to remind customers to continue to conserve water.

The stickers are 3 x 3 inches and can be placed on a mirror, wall, or window; they are "low tac" so they are easy to remove. They come in English or Spanish. The flier and poster include the five prohibited outdoor water uses now in effect (e.g., no irrigating between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m) and are in English on one side and in Spanish on the other.

Click here to order these free materials or pick them up in the lobby of our main office (220 Nellen Avenue, Corte Madera).

SONOMA-MARIN SAVING WATER PARTNERSHIP WINS EPA AWARD
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency this month recognized the Sonoma-Marin Saving Water Partnership as a WaterSense Partner of the Year for its commitment to promoting water efficiency. The three water districts and six cities that purchase water from the Sonoma County Water Agency (SCWA), including MMWD, are members of the Sonoma-Marin Saving Water Partnership. SCWA is the partnership program manager.

The partnership was honored for several 2013 conservation programs, including the 20-Gallon Challenge, which featured incentive prizes such as high-efficiency toilets and clothes washers, rainwater catchment and graywater systems, and custom water-wise landscape design in exchange for a pledge to save 20 gallons per person per day.

PHOENIX LAKE: PERIODIC ROAD AND TRAIL CLOSURES FOR NEXT SIX WEEKS
Starting Monday, October 20 a contractor for Marin County Public Works is performing geotechnical exploration work on the dam as part of a feasibility study for the Phoenix Lake flood reduction program to protect the Ross Valley.

The work will last about six weeks and will involve periodic road and trail closures near the dam crest. Maps with alternative routes are posted at various locations on site. A copy of the map is also available online.

MMWD PARTICIPATING IN REGIONAL CLIMATE VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT
The MMWD Board of Directors recently authorized a contribution of $30,000 to help fund a new study called the North Bay Climate Adaptation Initiative (NBCAI). The study was initiated by the Sonoma County Regional Climate Protection Authority (RCPA) in cooperation with NBCAI and several resource agencies in Sonoma, Marin, Napa, and Mendocino counties. The State Coastal Conservancy is providing $100,000 for the $200,000 study; the remaining funds will be provided by the Sonoma County Water Agency and Napa County.

The purpose of the assessment is to develop a spatially explicit, regional vulnerability assessment for implementing climate adaptation strategies. Once the assessment is completed, NBCAI will create a portfolio of watershed and sub-watershed reports customized to the planning needs of MMWD. The assessment will provide MMWD with a wealth of water-related data for a historic baseline and a multi-model set of climate futures.
