RAINFALL, RESERVOIRS END JUNE BELOW AVERAGE
The rainfall year ends on June 30 and in all likelihood we will not receive additional rain in the remaining few days. Total rainfall at Lake Lagunitas for the rainfall year ending June 30 will top out at 33.40 inches, which is about 64% of the annual average. This marks the third consecutive year of below average rainfall, and the reservoir storage levels reflect those low numbers.

The current reservoir storage is the lowest it has been for this date since the early 1990s. If not for the ongoing conservation efforts of our customers, and the especially heavy rain in February, we would be in a far worse position than we are today.

The MMWD Board of Directors' call for 25% voluntary rationing is still in place and current consumption figures show reduced water use. We appreciate everyone's conservation efforts and we encourage customers to take advantage of the district's many conservation programs and rebates. Get more information here.

Here are the current water statistics:
  • Reservoir Levels - As of June 15, reservoir storage is 61,250 acre-feet,* or 77% of capacity. The average for this date is 68,173 acre-feet, or 86% of capacity. Total capacity is 79,566 acre-feet.
  • Rainfall - Rainfall this fiscal year to date (July 1-June 15) is 33.40 inches. Average for the same period is 52.47 inches.
  • Water Use - Water use for the week of June 9-15 averaged 28.4 million gallons per day, compared to 31 million gallons per day for the same week last year.
  • Creek Releases - During the month of May 2014 MMWD released 218 million gallons, or a total of 669 acre-feet, into Lagunitas and Walker creeks in west Marin.

Water use and reservoir figures can be found on the Water Watch page of our website.

"WATER SAVING HEROES" RECOGNIZED BY MMWD BOARD OF DIRECTORS AT RECENT MEETING
When MMWD requested a 25% voluntary water use reduction in January, customers rose to the challenge. Individuals, businesses, schools, and public agencies have been doing an outstanding job saving water in both traditional and creative ways. At its May 20 meeting the MMWD Board of Directors recognized the following customers for being "Water-Saving Heroes":
  • San Rafael residents Nancy and Mike Duran;
  • Mayor Gary Phillips, City of San Rafael;
  • Chief Jason Weber, Marin County Fire Department;
  • Mike Grant, Facilities Program Manager, Marin County Office of Education;
  • Michael Cronin, Operations Manager, EO Products;
  • Lynn Langford, CEO, Lean Green Solutions;
  • Science Specialist Ted Stoeckley, Larkspur-Corte Madera School District;
  • Parents Marnie Glickman and Sommer Au-Yeung, Science Teacher Pete Hudson, and students of the Lower Elementary Class, Marin Montessori School, Corte Madera.
MMWD is looking for more water-saving heroes to recognize at future board meetings. Use this nomination form on MMWD's website to let us know about other exemplary conservation efforts.

Thank you for doing your part.

MMWD TO START ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW FOR RECYCLED WATER PIPELINE EXPANSION
The MMWD Board of Directors recently authorized the start of the environmental review process, as required by CEQA (the California Environmental Quality Act), for the expansion of the district's recycled water distribution system. MMWD is pursuing a State Revolving Fund (SRF) loan for the expansion project so MMWD can provide recycled water to the Peacock Gap Golf Course in San Rafael. Completing the CEQA process is a loan requirement.

The SRF funds were made available earlier this year when the California State Water Resources Control Board implemented a new SRF Water Recycling Funding Program in response to the drought. The program will provide $800 million in low-interest loans for recycled water projects statewide.

The board approved a contract in the amount of $435,038 to Panorama Environmental, Inc. for the environmental review work.

MMWD has been a pioneer in the use of recycled water since the early 1980s. Click here for more information about MMWD's recycled water program.

MMWD TO EMBARK ON NEW ENERGY AUDIT FOR DISTRICT FACILITIES
As part of its ongoing commitment to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, MMWD is undertaking a new energy audit through an Energy Partnership Program established by the California Energy Commission.

MMWD has implemented several measures over the years to operate in a more energy-efficient manner including using green energy, installing onsite solar panels, switching to virtual servers, buying hybrid vehicles, and more. However it has been several years since MMWD's last formal energy audit. New and improved technologies have become available in the intervening years and there are new potential funding sources for making such improvements.
