Student of the Month
shirley
Shirley Merkling works for Nutritional Weight and Wellness in Lakeville, so she has sat beside the Green Lotus staff for a few years, hearing all about yoga and its benefits.  Last year, she decided that yoga would be a great addition to her already healthy lifestyle.  Shirley says that yoga is a great way to keep physical fit as you get older, and that it has helped her to move better.  She has also discovered the importance of stillness in her life.  Shirley says: "This community is great!  I have always felt like a welcomed member of a terrific group of people".

Thanks to Shirley for being part of our sangha (community), we are so glad you are here.

  Greetings!

Our Common Humanity

Why? This is the one-word question you ask yourself. It is the question your children and others ask you. It is the question you ask others. When the world shifts, as it did at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, it is so human of us to ask that simple question. Why?

And then the question builds on itself:  Why? Why here? Why now? Why her/him? We watch the same footage over and over, seeking clues that stack up to answers.

When no simple answers are forthcoming, it is tempting - and fully human of us - to devolve into a dark place, to despair, and perhaps to denigrate unknown "others" who may or may not have committed this horrendous act. It is so easy to feel alone, to feel diminished.

But other news is breaking, if only we observe. Everywhere people Boston Marathon were helping others; not only the courageous first-response teams (how brave they are, how focused), but also common citizens who opened hands, hearts, and homes to the strangers in their midst. Out of the chaos and the shock pours the pure light of people helping people and out of that comes the growing understanding that this didn't happen just to "us." It happened to the whole world, to the good people of any country that had runners in that race and were watching their countrywomen/men and cheering for them with hope and pride.

This is the lesson of the mat, why we come together to practice child's pos in group classes and workshops an tod work with the healers at the centers: We are connected, and we are not alone. We are strengthened and supported by our connection, and we are not diminished. We walk our paths openly and freely, and we cannot be forced into ever smaller spaces - externally or internally.

We believe in community, we support it, we promote it - in Lakeville, in Mendota Heights, and now in Stillwater. The currency of our shared experience at the centers, as it was in Boston, is our common humanity - unshaken, unyielding, unbroken.

Gluten-Free Fried Fish fried fish
By Maureen Farley, Yoga Teacher & Gluten-Free Foodie

Growing up in North Dakota, in a family of avid fisher-persons, I developed my love of fried fish early on. I have so many fond memories of childhood, eating the bountiful catch that my grandfather, father, auntie, and brothers would bring home on warm summer evenings.  Since fried fish is one of my favorite treats, I was driven to find a gluten-free preparation that tasted good... and I did.  You wouldn't even guess that this recipe is gluten free, it tastes so good.  Crunchy breading, and moist fish, just like it should be.

Pose of the Month: Parivrtta Utkatasana
By Maureen Farley, Yoga Teacher Parivrtta Utkatasana
Also known as Revolved Chair Pose, the energetic nature of this pose is grounding, cleansing, and strengthening - the perfect pose to support you during our long, drawn-out pseudo-spring weather.

To get into Revolved Chair:
  1. Stand in Tadasana (Mountain Pose) with feet hip distance apart. Bring hands to the heart center in prayer pose.
  2. Exhale and bend your knees, bringing the thighs as near to parallel to the floor as possible. Ground down with the feet.
  3. On an exhalation, turn the chest toward the right, bring the left elbow to the outer right knee.  Press the elbow into the knee, while at the same time pressing the knee into the elbow.  Try to keep your legs parallel.
  4. Keep the thumbs at the heart center, palms pressed together firmly.
  5. Turn the head to look over the right shoulder if that feels ok with your neck.
  6. Shift weight slightly back toward the heels.
  7. Stay in this pose for five breaths, then release as you inhale and move back into Mountain Pose, then repeat on the other side.

Therapeutic Essential Oil of the Month: Citrus Bliss citrus bliss

Citrus Bliss is the epiphany of all that is great with citrus essential oils. The powerful aromas of wild orange, lemon, grapefruit, mandarin, bergamot, tangerine, and clementine with just a hint of vanilla combine to form a distinctively unique and harmonious blend. Its benefits reach far beyond elevating mood and reducing stress. Citrus oils have natural, potent compounds suitable to clean the air eliminating odors and airborne pathogens. Mixed with water, Citrus Bliss is a perfect solution for disinfecting countertops and other surfaces while emitting a fresh sweet scent. The Citrus Bliss essential oil blend can be used topically, or diffused into the air.
