Where do you practice?

  Greetings!

Our Indian yoga teacher talks to us briefly of friendliness. The words plunge me into girlhood memories of gentle training by my parents and grandparents into this art form.

When a new girl about my age would visit our church, and as the main service ended, Mom and Dad would nudge me through my resistance toward her to extend an invitation to Sunday school. When we traveled and I was the shy newcomer, they assisted me in bridging the chasm of strangeness when we dropped in at musuems, churches, camping grounds. I observed these two generations before me as they arranged in-home coffees, lunches, and dinners with other farm families and townspeople, some of whom were fast friends and others of whom were less than even mere acquaintances.

Friendliness was not only mannerly - it was life itself.

These memories and so many others flood over me as we practice together in Mother India. This group of seventeen open-

hearted persons with whom I am traversing India has been creative and mindful in extending friendliness, groups of them morphing again and again at meals, in yoga, riding buses, and visiting temples, cathedrals, and mosques. When someone is hurting physically, someone else comforts. When the steps are too steep, an arm is extended. When someone's patience wears thin, another's expands. To my knowledge, and even near the end of our 18-day trip, no one feels lonely exclusion.

What deeply enchants and encourages are the acts of friendliness offered by the Indian and the American people toward each other.

Respect - and smiles and hand movements - soften language and cultural barriers. Questions fly back and forth, smiles beam toward each other, many images are captured.

Friendliness can't be prescribed. It can't be purchased as an elixir, balm, or cocktail. And it can't be overrated. In combative, aggressive, bullying, or just plain unknown situations, friendliness goes a long way toward creating ease and acceptance. Extend your hand, your smile wherever you are. Reap the rewards. They're free.

P.S. When you walk through the doors of GL, you will be greeted with smiles and warmth. See you soon at the centers!

Happy Chinese New Year! year of the snake happy new year

From Marcia Kirk, L.Ac.

Do you know why it is traditional to wear red and set off fireworks for Chinese New Year? The story goes that every year has a life of its own and after 365 days, that old year would get very grumpy and crusty and turn into a MONSTER, named Nian! Nobody likes a monster, especially a crusty old one - especially since he was known to nibble on small children on a particularly bad day!  One day, the villagers realized that because Nian was so old and grumpy, he hated bright, happy colors and DESPISED loud, happy noises. So, of course, they all decided to wear red clothing and set off fireworks and drive off the grumpy old year and make way for a happier, friendlier new one!  Chinese New Year, which is based on the new LUNAR year is February 10 this year.

Wishing you a Happy, Loud, and Bright Chinese New Year

And a Happy Friendly 2013!

Gluten-Free Banana Muffinsbanana muffins
By Maureen Farley, Yoga Teacher, Gluten-Free Foodie

Many people are having health challenges associated with wheat.  Digestive issues, IBS, inflammation, pain - all these conditions can be aggravated or even caused by the consumption of wheat!  Who doesn't love a good banana muffin?  These muffins are so yummy and moist you will not be missing the wheat. I made them with a combination of oat and garbanzo bean flour so they are high in fiber and protein. The recipe also calls for five bananas so there is a very rich banana flavor, which is what I really like out of a banana muffin or bread. Sometimes I will throw in some ground cardamom and powdered ginger to this recipe to give them an Indian spice. You can also add a cup of dried fruit (I like chopped figs or dates) or a cup of your favorite nuts (I like cashews or pumpkin seeds).  Or maybe some chocolate chips! Make them the way that sounds good to you!

P.S. By the way if you think you might have a problem with gluten/wheat, you can see Green Lotus chiropractors Dr. Alane or Dr. Gary, they can test you, give appropriate direction for diet modifications, and more.  Our nutrition experts Nutritional Weight and Wellness and Sue Parks are great resources as well.

Therapeutic Essential Oil of the Month: LEMONdoterra lemon
This essential oil powerhouse is cold-pressed from lemon rinds to preserve its delicate nature and potent properties. Lemon is known as a powerful aromatic, topical, and internal cleanser that can be used to complement many other oils. Diffusing lemon in a room can cleanse the air and uplift mood, which is why its sometimes called liquid sunshine. It can also be used on surfaces throughout the home as a non-toxic cleaning booster. For aromatic, topical or dietary use.  A drop or two of lemon oil in a glass of water, with a little stevia or other sweetener, makes a delicious lemonade-like beverage.  You can also cook with it!

Pose of the Month: Eka Pada Rajakapotasana eka pada rajakapotasana 2
By Maureen Farley, Yoga Teacher & Former Back Pain Sufferer
Also known as One-Legged Royal Pigeon Pose, this is a powerhouse of a pose because it targets both the psoas muscle and the piriformis muscle.

In the upright version of Eka Pada Rajakapotasana (above) we work on the psoas muscle, which connects the lower spine to the thigh bone at the hip.  It is one of the main causes of lower back pain. eka pada rajakapotasana

When the upper body is folded forward (like at right), we are working on the piriformis muscle which connects  the sacrum, or tailbone, with the thigh bone at the hip joint.  The sciatic nerves lives right next to this muscle, so when the piriformis becomes shortened, tight, or bound up, this can put pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing painful sciatica, or nerve pain running down the back of the leg.  Doing Pigeon pose helps to keep lengthen and ease this muscle.

What is Ayurveda?
By Gwen Linden-Bruzek, ERYT 500, NASM-CPT, and Certified Ayurvedic Educatorgwen ayurveda
It literally means LIFE KNOWLEDGE. This sounds a bit overwhelming, doesn't it? Come to an Ayurveda Workshop where we will share the beautiful timeless concepts of ancient healing and well being!  We are all made of the same stuff: Air, Ether, Fire, Water and Earth. This unique combination of elements makes you...you!

Are you a grounded Kapha (earth) type?

Or a fiery Pitta (fire) type?

Or is a quick, light Vata (air) way more your style?

When we know our inherent nature, we can find simple ways to help maintain a healthy balanced constitution. This is not a one size fits all approach to health and wellbeing, but rather an extremely individual approach to functioning at our best, in body, mind and spirit.

All three of my workshops (below) will send you home with an overview of Ayurvedic wisdom and knowledge of your elemental type. You will experience a brief meditation and take part in a lively discussion introducing you to what has been called the mother of healing modalities!
