Greetings! India-Bound, Taking Nothing for Granted On Wednesday, 20 of us who call Green Lotus one of our special places - students, clients, teachers - will board a plane bound for the sub-continent that is the rich home of yoga. We are going to practice yoga; to meet the Indian people; to visit artists' colonies, tea plantations, temples, churches, ayurvedic spas, and ashrams; to eat (of course!); to shop, and to explore. As a group, we met for dinner and conversation several times the past five months, at the wise suggestion of our intrepid trip leader, Ziya Tarapore, to begin to form our traveling community. We know we will have to practice patience, support, and acceptance toward each other. Though Green Lotus has offered many retreats close to home, this is the first time we have journeyed far afield with so many - new territory awaits us in so many ways. Less than 30 hours before leaving, I was caught up short, plunged into fear. What made me hold my breath was an email from my dear friend, who is traveling on the other side of the world with her constant companion. They just had received word that his gorgeous, lively 90-year-old mother, Sally, had passed suddenly, unexpectedly. They are on their way back to San Francisco, plans cast aside and quickly redrawn only 10 days into a eight-week odyssey. She wrote: "We are both stunned and up in the middle of the night as the president is sworn in, and the moon is waxing over the Bay of Bengal. Love you all. Take nothing for granted."
I clutched hands to chest, my heart tight and aching. What to do? If I stay home, will my 85-year-old mom be safer? Am I selfish? How can I control everything? And then within a few moments my friend wrote again: "I hesitated sending the news to you because I know you worry about your mom. But it felt weird not to inform you. Retta (my mom) will be fine, and we just have to proceed with our lives. Your Mom sees her doctor and is in good health. Don't hesitate. Go, dispensing your love and wisdom on the path and receiving it back. It's all one path." The lesson again and again of life: Live each moment and breath, as the wonderful Sally did. I resume my packing - and my breathing - feeling the fear ease and taking nothing for granted. ( Click to read the whole story on our blog, Lotus Blossom.) Marcia (writing), MB (also packing), Candy, and Christie P.S. In January 2014, we are going on a six-day wellness retreat in Mexico. Watch for the news - and live fully until it arrives! If you would like to be on a email list for this trip, contact us at info@greenlotusyogactr.com. See you soon! |

Brew Up Some Yogi Tea to Keep You Warm & Healthy in the Cold Months!
Yogi Bhajan brought kundalini yoga to the west, along with this recipe, which is regarded as a powerful health tonic by students of this style. Years before he came to America, when Yogi Bhajan was a military commander in India, there was an epidemic among the troops. He ordered all of his men to fill their canteens with Yogi Tea and drink nothing else, not even water. His battalion was the only unit that didn't get sick! Yogi tea purifies the blood, lungs, and circulatory system. It cleanses the liver, aids digestion, and has many more benefits. I have been drinking it for years, warm and soothing for the body, it's especially balancing for your health in the colder months. It is easy and inexpensive to make, but when you brew up a batch be careful not to pass out from the amazing aroma that fills your house!

Pose of the Month: Anjaneyasana

Also know as a low lunge, this pose is a wonderful stretch for the psoas muscle, which lies deep in the abdomen, starting at the lower spine and connects to the upper part of the thigh bone at the hip. It tends to become shortened in people who work at desk jobs or sit a lot. If the psoas becomes tight, it can be a major contributor to lower back pain. To get into the pose:
- From from hands and knees or Downward-Facing Dog, step the right foot forward between your hands, aligning the right knee over the right heel. You may need to scoot your foot forward so the lower leg is straight up and down.
- Keeping the right knee fixed in place, slide the left knee back until you feel a comfortable stretch in the front of your left thigh and groin. Turn the top of your foot to the floor.
- For this stretch, you can put your hands:
- on either side of your foot
- both on the floor on the inside of your foot
- on your knees, like above
- reaching toward the sky as in Warrior I
For more yoga poses that target the psoas muscle you can check out my workshop, Yoga for a Healthy Back, where I teaches yoga sequences that target the major causes of back pain. Plus hip openers, posture improvers, a shoulder sequence, a pinch of anatomy, and more! If you have back pain, this workshop is for you. |
