Student of the Month:
Patti West
Patti joined the Green Lotus sangha last year as a massage therapist and Reiki master. Patti started her yoga practice seeking the spiritual benefits that are associated with a practice. Over the last year, Patti has embraced yoga and it has become an important part of her life, not just for the spiritual benefits like grounding, calming, and an increased sense of well-being, she has discovered yoga's physical benefits too and feels that yoga helps keep her body strong and healthy, and more able to do her physically demanding work as a massage therapist. Patti recognizes the beauty of integrating wellness and yoga and feels so passionately about her practice that she joined Green Lotus's 200-hour teacher training program in September. We are so blessed to have such a talented therapist and yogini as part of our sangha!  Namaste Patti!

Soul Swans
Walk and touch peace every moment.
Walk and touch happiness every moment.
Each step brings a fresh breeze.
Each step makes a flower bloom.
Kiss the Earth with your feet.
Bring the Earth your love and happiness.
The Earth will be safe when we feel safe in ourselves.
O friend, understand.
The body is like the ocean, rich with hidden treasures.
Open your innermost chamber and light its lamp.
Within the body are gardens,
Rare flowers, peacocks; the inner music;
Within the body a lake of bliss,
On it, the white soul-swans take their joy.

Greetings from our hearts:

Life brings to us each day such infinite beauty and possibility. If we live each moment and each breath, then our awareness seeks both - even when troubled times come. My daugther, Gina, takes after my mother. She wakes up with an inside light that sometimes surpasses even the brightest of sunrises and creates a glow on even the gloomiest dawns. She and Mom feel an intimacy with the natural world that helps to sustain them.

On September 12, Gina sent, via text, this photo of a caterpillar Caterpillar on Leafshe spotted on campus that day. Fearing for its safety, she promptly adopted it and moved it to her bedroom, nestled in its own mattress of leaves, twigs, and grass. Because she adopted a chrysalis many years at the Minnesota State Fair - and because she is a biology major - the care and feeding of a caterpillar were not new to her. Being a mother who understands that her daughter's heart can break, back in Lakeville I worried that the little creature would survive. I braced for a sad call.

The next day this photo arrived. In a little more than 24 hours, the fuzzy roommate spun itself into a coccoon, taking on the Gina's Chrysalis  form of a well-protected, glowing green chrysalis. The polka dots you see in the background belong to, of course, Gina's bedsheet or pillow - because you never can keep your caterpillar/chrysalis too close, not ever. (Perhaps it will not surprise you, having seen this photo, to read that as our children grew up a menagerie visited our home - Dakota, the fish; Fizzy, the white rat; Carlos, the corn snake; Sam, Jasmine, and Martha, the cats; Sarah and Cookie, the dogs, and Mohican, the horse. Not all at the same time but in orderly succession!).

Gina's Butterfly  Meet Hernandez, Gina's "latest pet and your first grandchild, Mom," as she wrote to me by text on September 24. I am not sure exactly how the gender became known, but then, again, I

am not a biology major. Isn't he gorgeous? Gina and Hernandez spent several hours together as his wings dried, and then, like the good parent she is, she set him free (and worried for several hours as he clung to her screen, also like any good parent.)

Life is beautiful, even when it's difficult. Creatures change and evolve - sometimes quickly and sometimes more slowly. I do. You do. We all do. Hernandez did, and this is what he teaches us, and this is what binds us.

See you soon at the centers!

'Tis the Dry, Windy, Beautiful Fall Season of Change...Are YOU Ready??
Ayurvedic Tips from Gwen Linden-Bruzek

fall leaf instagram by mo Ayurveda, yoga's sister science, has a lot to say about the seasons and we folks who live in Minnesota, also have a lot to say about the seasons!  We cannot avoid the changes that take place, they effect and shape our lives everyday!

In Ayurvedic science, this Autumnal season is called the Vata season.  Vata is one of three elemental combinations.  It is composed of primarily air and its secondary element is ether.

The changes come fast and we may feel a bit of a shock to the system as the cold, dry winds start to blow.

To counter the effects of drastic Earth changes, the practitioner of this 5000 year old science has some common sense advice on how to eat, how to live and how to exercise.

Yoga is the prescribed form of movement as it is a systematic practice designed to bring an individual in union with his or her inner and outer world.  Yoga can be used to change energy and/or guide it in the direction it is needed to maintain or restore peace and balance. Click on the link below to see three poses that are wonderful to counter the dry-cold-erratic season.

What is Ear Candling?
ear candling

Also called ear coning or thermal-aricular therapy, ear candling is an age-old remedy used to clear the ears and improve general health and well-being.  A hollow candle-like wax cone is used.  One end is placed in the ear, the other end is lit creating soothing warm smoke that enters the ear canal, loosening and removing ear wax and toxins.  Some clients have even reported debris from the sinuses and nasal passages being dislodged and released. Green Lotus massage therapist and ear candler Julie Olson uses only all natural beeswax ear candles, not the more common cheaper paraffin ones that contain chemicals and solvents.  The ear candling session also includes massage of the head and neck, pressing of acupressure points that release and open the sinuses, and lymphatic drainage massage.  Ear candling can be done periodically for maintaining ear health and to keep them clear of debris,  It can also be done to help speed the recovery of an infection or irritation.  Julie does 30-minute ear candling & massage sessions for $55.  You can also add ear candling to a 60 or 90-minute massage for $40.  Click here to find an appointment!

Gluten-Free Recipe: Autumn Harvest Soup!
By Maureen Farley, Yoga Teacher & Gluten-Free Foodie

Nothing says fall like Squash! Not only are they delicious but they are also good for you!  They are a good source of vitamin A, which helps maintain our eyes, immune system, and endocrine system. And according to Ayurveda the medical science of yoga, squash is the perfect fall food.  Eating in-season local produce is the way to keep our bodies healthy and grounded, which is especially important to be mindful of during the transition between seasons when the element of air, or vata, within us can become imbalanced. Help keep your vata balanced this autumn with this delicious gluten-free recipe!
