July 2012

Dear Friends,

Transitions arise, often when you least expect them. This month, two enormous ones caught me off guard, leaving me weak in the knees and speechless.

My cell phone sounded about 6 p.m. on the Friday before the Fourth of July. As the bell trilled, I was cruising into downtown Minneapolis, belting out summer tunes and looking forward to dinner with buddy Julie. My aunt said, "Your uncle wants to talk to you." (This is how we do things in my family oftentimes.) My uncle intoned, "Your mother needs a pacemaker - Monday." Later that evening, sitting on Julie's balcony and watching Old Man River tumble and twirl over the falls, Mom's doctor told me she would be fine but that the matter was urgent, given her age. Her heart rate had fallen to a measly 32 beats per minute - any lower and she would be fainting or risking a massive heart attack.

When your mother is nearly 85, maybe you shouldn't be surprised at news like this. Maybe, but I was. Like all other summers, Mom still was mowing her lawn, trimming her flowers, picking the weeds. Her heart was telling a different story. Together we would be facing a new reality. And so we did: Together we grieved, together we prepared, together we recovered.

Ten days or so later, husband Vince and I were in Los Angeles to visit our son and daughter-in-law and also to attend the wedding of Pehr Hovey, son of my beloved friend and GL business partner, MB. Fun, fun, fun to heal from fear, fear, fear.

The night before the wedding our little family strolled down the block for some yummy frozen yogurt. Walking back to their home, our son Tony's voice said something like: "You know, Mom and Dad, Allison and I hope you really enjoy the next years. We hope you travel, have fun, live where you want to live - and don't worry about your kids."

Vince and I somehow choked out a thanks, but in our room later whispered: "What did that mean? Do they see US as old?" A transition - children encouraging their older parents to dance while the dancing's good. Sweet but a little startling.

But sometimes you just have to have a laugh. Getting Marcia and Vince couple  dressed for the wedding the next afternoon, I hauled Vince over to the mirror, put my arm around him, and said: "Hey, we still look good! We've still got it, right?"  We doubled over from the laughter. We still could.

Moral of the story: Transitions create change. Embrace them. Take time for yourselves. Take care of yourselves.Take each moment and each breath and live it fully with love and laughter, with friends and family.

What is Energy Healing?
red energy healing hands

People are becoming more aware of and open to alternative and adjunctive therapies. While the benefits of chiropractics, massage, and acupuncture are perhaps a bit easier to understand, the benefits of energy healing are not to be overlooked. As the manager of a healing Center, I answer lots of questions about energy healing. People are curious. What is it?  What does it feel like? How can it help?

All traditional & holistic forms of healing recognize the interconnectedness of the various levels of our being: physical, mental, emotional, energetic, and spiritual.  It is known that affecting one level can bring change to all levels. Many people see this at work in their lives when after a mentally stressful work week they get a backache or headache. Or, as during a very joyous celebration one can feel extra energy or relief from a physical malady.

Energy healing works on this principal of interconnectedness.  During an energy healing session, the client lies comfortably while the practitioner use a light or near-body touch to clear, balance, and energize the person's energetic system, thus promoting healing on all levels. Many clients report improvements in physical problems like headaches, colds, injuries, fertility challenges, stress, and recovery from illness or surgery. Clients also report feeling calmed, centered, detoxified, de-stressed, nurtured, even blissful after an energy healing session.

Green Lotus has caring energy healers on staff that are experienced in helping clients with a wide range of challenges from the purely physical to spirit-based challenges...
  • Reiki is thought to open and balance the chakra system and to aid the body in recovering from "dis-ease".
  • Healing Touch has a spiritual focus. When a practitioner heals from the heart with their touch, they become conduits for the healing energies of God.
  • Hands-On Healing works to bring balance to all levels of your being and releasing old, limiting patterns that get in the way of growth and healing.
  • Sat Nam Rasayan is a ancient meditative healing practice from the Kundalini yoga tradition.  It addresses blockages and imbalances at their root.
Green Lotus has a holistic perspective -  integrating yoga and healing modalities into your current wellness regime.  We have a variety of special, highly-trained energy healers.  If you are still unsure of which modality would work best for your situation, call the Center at 651.319.9525 today and schedule a free 15-minute consultation.  We are here to help.

Keepin' It Local: CSA shares, a new way to look at box lunches
By Mindy Shulfer, Staff at Green Lotus and RYT

If you are like me and decided to try a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) share this year, each week brings new excitement about what might be in the box. My CSA is very helpful at providing recipes and produce tips that help us get the most out of our vegetables, berries and herbs. A great resource for locating and comparing CSAs can be found here. With the abundance of crops that are in season right now, it's hard to pick a favorite recipe. One of my favorites that I have tweaked and played with is a Zucchini and Corn Bake. You can use both yellow and green zucchini, and choose whether or not to use meat for a more savory flavor.

Zuchini and Corn Bake (Print

  • 2-3 medium zucchinis
  • 3 ears of sweet corn, uncooked, kernels cut from cob (MN Grown, of course)
  • 5-6 pieces of bacon (or 1-2 chicken-apple sausage links)
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup finely shredded mozzarella and parmesan cheese blend
  • minced garlic, chopped onion and extra virgin olive oil
  • salt, pepper and chili powder to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Pan fry bacon in one skillet while sautéing the onions and garlic in another pan until fragrant. Add the sliced zucchini. Sauté for a few minutes, just until zucchini starts to soften. Pour the cooked zucchini mixture into a baking dish and cover with the cut corn. Season with salt, pepper and chili powder to taste. Crumble the cooked bacon and add to the dish. Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the mixture and bake for 15 to 20 minutes until heated through and cheese has melted.
