June 2012

Dear Friends,

In mid-June one of THOSE days happened: From a smooth start it devolved into one crisis after another. A sick aging horse. A frantic aging mother. A sick rebelling plumbing system at one of the centers. Enough strum and drang to elicit various sayings: Holy Hannah! Oy vey! Good golly, Miss Molly. And more, much more. (Dad would have been proud of the much, much more! Mom - not so much.)

Have you ever noticed that at times like the this the mind takesbalancing stones with one red one you for a spin? How could this happen to ME? it asks. Why is this happening NOW? What have I done to deserve THIS? What is it gets WORSE? Spinning mind, until you are spinning out of control.

This is why we practice yoga. This is why we mediate and pray. This is why we integrate different ways to calm, to heal, to reflect so that we can react less and live more in the moment - accepting it for what it is and what it brings - knowing that the next moment rises again with new circumstances. Not clinging to the "good",  the non-suffering, and nor the "bad", the suffering, as permanent because that is not the case.

These other ways - yoga, meditiation and prayer, acupuncture, massage, holistic healing, healing touch and reiki, and other integrative modalities - are being studied by health professionals and researchers around the world. In a recent interview on MPR, a physician from a major U.S. medical center said new discoveries are being made in Western labs about how natural microbes can aid in healing, perhaps lessening the overuse, or ill effects, of antibiotics.

James Finley, the noted clinicial psychologist and contemplative (pictured at left), has received a grant to write a book about how contemplation has helped to heal psychological trauma in his clients. Research abounds on the positive effects of meditation, including with troubled and wounded veterans.

Last week, a yoga student wrote these very words to me after sharing a very personal story of deep loss: "Every time you and your instructors tell us to breathe, I do." Who is the teacher and who is the student now? We all are each other's students. We all are each other's teachers. We all are each other's healers. We all are each other clients.

Oh, yes: The horse lived. The mother calmed. The plumbing system is repaired.

Headaches Are Such a Pain!headache

Headaches are such a pain - and they affect lots of people, especially at this time of year.  Many things can trigger a headache  - pollen, stress, fatigue, food allergies, and the list goes on.  Most of the time we just grab an aspirin and hope for the best, but when looking at headaches holistically, there are a wealth of options available that don't just mask the symptom of pain - they address the root cause which  brings balance and healing to your whole system.

Do you suffer from headaches?  Is what you are doing now not working?  Are you interested in trying a holistic approach? There are a bunch of holistic options available at Green Lotus for you:
  • Headaches caused by seasonal & food allergies - Dr. Alane and Dr. Gary do allergy elimination and food testing through Applied Kinesiology.
  • Muscle tension headaches - Green Lotus's highly trained massage therapists use a variety of techniques including myofascial release, trigger point therapy, soft tissue therapy, connective tissue therapy, and more!
  • Stress headaches - Energy healing like ReikiHands-On Healing & Healing Touch relax the nervous system and sooth the spirit.  A regular yoga practice also does wonders for managing stress!
  • Migraine headaches - acupuncture is a fantastic choice for all kinds of headaches including migraines, and can bring relief when nothing else has worked. Check out Erica and Marcia, Green Lotus acupuncturists.
Green Lotus has a holistic perspective -  integrating yoga and healing modalities into your current wellness regime.  We have a variety of special, highly-trained healing service providers and yoga teachers.  If you are still unsure of which modality or class would work best for your situation, call the Center at 651.319.9525 today and schedule a free 15-minute consultation.  We are here to help.  Namaste, Maureen

Keepin' It Local: Lunch from the Farmers Market
By Maureen Farley, Yoga Teacher & Ayurvedic Foodie

Have you been to your local farmers market lately?  FarmersFarmers Market Veggies n Stuff and food producers have been expanding their offerings, and you might be surprised at the variety of yummy items available, even this early in the season.  Handmade tortillas, heirloom veggies, microgreens, honey, berries, sprouts, and homemade salad dressings - locally produced or grown.  According to Ayurveda, the medical science of yoga, eating locally grown food that is whole, organic, and in season is the healthiest way to eat.

Last weekend I went to the Lyndale Avenue Farmer's Market in Minneapolis and picked up everything I needed to make a delicious, local, and organic lunch.  Here is how I made my Farmer's Market Crunchy Veggie Wrap...
  • 2 whole grain tortillas
  • 1/2 - 1 cup grated cheddar cheese (mine was from happy Wisconsin cows!  Moo!)
  • 1/2 cup feta cheese crumbled
  • 3 radishes, sliced thinly
  • 1-2 carrots grated
  • 1-2 green onions, chopped
  • about 1 cup sprouts (alfalfa, onion, radish, sunflower, or your favorite)
  • A few tablespoons of your favorite vinagrette, or use my recipe for Bubba's Maple Vinagrette
farmers market veggie wrap 2Heat toaster oven or regular oven to 350.  Sprinkle cheddar cheese on each tortilla and place directly on center oven rack. Heat until cheese is just melted and tortillas are deliciously crisp - only a few minutes.  Remove from oven then top with veggies and feta, then drizzle with a bit of vinagrette. Fold each half and enjoy!

Are you unsure of where your local farmers market is?  The Minnesota Farmers Market Association lists a ton of them from Albert Lea to Zimmerman.  Click the link and start supporting your local farmers and food producer by keepin' it local!  Om!
