Ziya Tarapore - Yoga Teacher

Ziya began her yoga practice at the age of seven in her native India.  As an adult, yoga and meditation helped her get through the nastiness of cancer treatment, and the aftermath. Her brush with cancer inspired her to develop a class that helps cancer survivors (and their loved ones) to breathe deep, relax, and begin to see themselves as healthy and whole. The Yoga for CancerCare class, Saturdays 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. in Lakeville, has now been developed into Yoga for CancerCare Training: How to Work with Patients & Survivors, a Yoga Alliance certified 20-hour continuing education program for teachers, scheduled for September 8 & 9, 2012.

May 2012

Dear Friends,

In April, a student who joined us when Mendota Heights opened five months ago found herself hitting her stride. Her spine now lengthened easily in down dog, her tree stood rooted and straight, and in neon heartchild's pose her heart melted toward the earth. With tears in her eyes one day, she told her teacher, who was turning the class over to someone else, "I am going to miss you so. You helped me believe in myself and helped me stop telling myself that 'I can't do it." What makes this story extra memorable? This lovely woman is in her later 70s and had never done yoga before.

The Voice of Doubt (VOD) follows us everywhere, doesn't it? And how fully human of us it is to hear VOD on and off - or maybe usually on. Taking charge of our bodies, minds, and spirits, though, lowers VOD's volume and eventually renders it ineffective. As we grow healthier and stronger, Voice of Doubt recedes and Knowledge of Self emerges. Whether your regimen centers on classes, or classes and acupuncture, or nutritional awareness and massage is a personal choice. And it is a choice to practice and study vitality and good health.

The only choice shouldn't be "I can't do it." The Green Lotus community is made up of the young and the old, women and men, those seeking good health and those maintaining it, people with MS, fibromyalgia, and arthritis, people who take five classes a week and those who run marathons - and everything in between. It's open, welcoming, supportive.

The next time you come in, listen closely. You may hear an energetic voice, not of doubt but of strength. It is saying: You can do it.

Spring Lentil & Wild Dandelion Salad
By Maureen Farley, Teacher & Massage Therapist

This perfect spring salad is vegetarian, light, and cleansing. It is easy and fast, can be modified to use the veggies you have on hand, and can be made ahead of time for picnics and barbeques. It also incorporates principles of Ayurveda, the medical science of yoga. Eating locally and according to the seasons is important in Ayurveda. Seasonal eating supports the body in maintaining health and connects us to nature and the cycles of Mother Earth.

Spring is a transition time, a time of cleansing, a time to become more active after the long winter. During winter Dandelion greenswe eat hearty warming foods to keep us nourished, warm, and balanced. In spring the sprouts start to grow, the world turns green around us - these are clues to what foods are best to nourish our bodies. Sprouts and greens cleanse our bodies gently while also supplying minerals and antioxidants. Sprouts also contain prana or qi, which are just words that mean that they are alive; we get this energy from the sprouts when we eat them. Dandelion greens are very cleansing; they help our bodies metabolize and release toxins, and they are among the first plants that we see in the spring.

Mother Nature knows which foods our bodies need, and she knows that spring is a time to cleanse. If you have access to dandelion greens that grow wildly and free of pesticides and herbicides, harvest them before they flower, when the leaves are tender and young. If you live in an urban area, dandelion greens are available at natural food stores and many groceries. Parsley is rich in chlorophyll and certain minerals and vitamins that support our nervous system. Ginger is slightly warming - so in this transition time between winter and summer, it is a great idea to add a little warmth to our foods. The grounding nature of the lentils, combined with the cleansing nature of the sprouts, dandelion greens, and parsley, make a perfect spring food for your body to both cleanse and nourish this spring.
