Consider The Person With Dementia, Not The Disease
From my experience dealing with individual with memory impairment and Alzheimer disease for over 25 years, I would like to proposes a simple yet, for many providers, radical idea: We need to STOP thinking of dementia patients as people with diseases to be treated, and start thinking of them as people with a terrifying, shifted reality who still have lots left to give if their trust can just be earned.
I will sum it with simple word: creating LIFE.
Negative attitudes toward people with dementia are a big factor in the combative atmosphere that can arise at times between those with the disease and their caregivers.
I learned that many providers including physicians, "look at the person with dementia from a single viewpoint-that of a broken person in need of medication to mitigate the decline," . "Our standardized tests reduce" the elder to a list of "disordered thinking processes, while we ignore the complex cognitive and emotional qualities that can be retained even in advanced stages" of the disease.
In other words, just because someone has a brain disorder doesn't mean the person isn't still experiencing life. In past decade, a growing number of health professionals say and support the same approach implemented at Dodge Park Rest Home few years ago. Creating a unique moments of joy and excitement is a key to support and celebrate the resident abilities and not the disease. The residents life histories, values and spirituality, and coping styles, for example, remain. In fact, anecdotal evidence points to people with dementia being more exquisitely attuned to their environment, relationships, and spirituality than those without the disease.
But the challenges of experiencing dementia are overwhelming for the sufferer, and that must be recognized.
The main focus of Dodge Park Rest Home for staff training for 2013 is how to support residents life history, values and spritiuality.

| Missing Day At Work | |
A boss wondered why one of his most valued employees had not phoned in sick one day. Having an urgent problem with one of the main computers,he dialled the employee's cell phone number and was greeted with a child's whisper. "Hello." "Is your daddy home?" he asked. "Yes," whispered the small voice. "May I talk with him?" The child whispered, "No." Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, "Is your Mommy there?" "Yes," whispered the small voice. "May I talk with her?" Again the small voice whispered, "No." Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked, "Is anybody else there?" "Yes," whispered the child, "a policeman" Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee's home, the boss asked, "May I speak with the policeman?" "No, he's busy", whispered the child. "Busy doing what?" "Talking to Daddy and Mommy and the Fireman," the whisper answered. Growing more worried as he heard what sounded like a helicopter through the earpiece on the phone, the boss asked, "What is that noise?" "A helicopter." answered the whispering voice. "What is going on there?" demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive. Again, whispering, the child answered, "The search team just landed the helicopter." Alarmed, concerned and a little frustrated the boss asked, "What are they searching for?" Still whispering, the young voice replied with a muffled giggle.

| Mother In Law | George went on a vacation to the Middle East with his Family including his mother-in-law. During their vacation in Jerusalem George's Mother-in-law died. With the death certificate in his hand, George went to the American Consulate Office to make arrangements to send the body back to the United States for a proper burial. The Consul told George that to send the body back to the United States for burial is very, very expensive. It could cost him as much as $5,000.00. The Consul told him, in most cases the person responsible for the remains normally decides to bury the body here in Jerusalem. This would only cost him $150.00. George thinks for sometime and answers, "I don't care how much it will cost to send the body back; that's what I want to do. " The Consul says "You must have loved your Mother-in-law very much considering the difference in price." "No, it's not that," says George. "You see, I know of a case many, many years ago of a man that was buried here in Jerusalem. On the third day he arose from the dead! I just can't take that chance!

A girls mother finds an upopened pregnancy test under her bed. After tears have been shed, and arguments have been had, the parents tell her to go and take the test. The test comes out positive, and the parents furiously insist she let's the father know. The next day, a shiny, brand-new looking Ferrari pulls up in front of the house, an a distinguished, handsome man in an impeccable Armani suit steps out, and they let him into the house. "I am the person who impregnated your daughter," he announced. "I am prepared to take responsibility for my actions - however, I cannot guarantee I will be there for the child after it's born. I will however, supply you with $10,000 so you can have the best healthcare during your pregnancy, and at least $650,000 for each year of the baby's life. I will provide your daughter with constant income so that your daughter and her child will live a life of luxury - I will also provides a house of your choice and a brand new car. However, if it turns out to be a miscarriage, what do you suggest I do?"
The father of the pregnant girl, who had been silent up until then, rose from his seat, put a hand on the mans shoulder, looked him in the eye, and said, "Make me another grandson"

I'm awfully cold.""I have a better idea," she replies. "Just for tonight, let's pretend that we're married.""Wow! That's a great idea!!" he exclaims."Good," she replies. "Get your own damn blanket!"
After a moment of silence, he farted.
