Cleveland Right to Life Responds to Plain Dealer

Plain Dealer Opinion Writer Devalues Prolife Debate

In an article which appeared in today's Plain Dealer on-line edition, Jeff Darcy uses hyperbole to address a very serious issue...one that deserves a proper and professional debate. "In his opinion piece today, Darcy invokes names such as Putin and Ariel Castro to belittle the pro-life/pro-family stance Cleveland Right to Life has adopted", notes CRTL Board Member Jerry C. Cirino. "After thousands of years of the family being defined as a father and mother with children, Darcy seems to think that he has come up with a new twist to what the family unit should be", continues Cirino. "He seems willing to scrap the entire traditional family simply because it is not perfect and because some parents abuse substances or are dysfunctional in some way. The world must be grateful that they have Jeff Darcy thinking up new solutions for them", concluded Cirino.

"While I am sure that Mr. Darcy is a fine man we must remember that his expertise is cartoon drawing" said Molly Smith, President of CRTL. CRTL further notes that Mr. Darcy crosses the line from hyperbole to intolerance when he depicts a respected prolife leader wearing coat hangers for ear-rings, just because he disagrees with her convictions. "There are few organizations in the region who have done more for women, children and families than CRTL" says Smith. "... and he is mistaken to believe that people in the pro-life movement are "crazed conservatives". Perhaps he hasn't noticed that the national polls now show most Americans favor either eliminating abortion or severely limiting it", continued Smith. The July Gallup poll shows 48% of Americans identify as pro-life vs. 45% as pro-abortion.

Smith notes that including preservation of the traditional family into their improved mission statement was necessary, not for the grassroots who already get it, but for the elitists (especially in Washington) who have lost touch with the common citizen and their convictions. Since the improvement was published, support for CRTL has poured in from across the country and from as far away as Texas, Alaska, Colorado and California.

Since Mr. Darcy claims he's pro-life, we invite him attend our upcoming Bringing America Back to Life Symposium (
http://www.bringingamericabacktolife.org  ) where nationally acclaimed experts will address these difficult issues. These speakers will allow Mr. Darcy to educate himself more fully on what being prolife means to the individual and to society rather than just referencing a fictional comedy TV show as his model for the future.

CRTL is asking prolife supporters to call/email/mail the following Plain Dealer management to let them know that this opinion piece devalued debate over a critical moral principle. CRTL believes that respectful disagreement should rule the day, not "opining' masquerading as journalism.
