A Look at the New SAT
You may have heard that this past March, the College Board made content, format, and scoring changes to the SAT. What do those changes include?
The new SAT is now similar to the ACT in that test takers don't lose points for wrong answers, and there are now only four answer choices, not five.
However, the revised SAT focuses on real knowledge than on a student's mastery of test-taking tricks. Students need to quickly apply their information processing skills and reason their way through the exam.
Additional changes
  • The new SAT is 3 hours long (and 50 minutes for the optional essay).
  • The focus is on knowledge and skills that have been proven necessary for college/career readiness and success.
  • The optional essay tests reading, writing, and analytical skills; students analyze text provided on the test.
  • The scale now ranges from 400 to 1600, and there is subscore reporting for each test.
The Chandler Public Library offers plenty of resources for students to prepare for the SAT. The most up-to-date and accessible resources are Testing & Education Reference Center and Learning Express. These online resource offer practice tests and courses, ebooks containing valuable study material, detailed answer explanations, test-taking strategies and tips, a scholarship search feature and much more. Best of all, they are FREE!
To get access to either of these resources from home, sign in with your library card and PIN numbers. Then you will create a free account with a user name and password, which you'll use every time you sign back in. This will allow you to save your work and pick up where you left off last time.
For additional information and assistance, please ask one of our staff members or call 480-782-2800.
TEDx for Youth

The Chandler Public Library presents its third TEDx event, Breaking Stereotypes: Beyond the Box. Our youth speakers will address the theme of stereotypes and the stigmas they experience or observe through spoken word, dance, talks and music.
This is a youth-only (ages 9-19) event and admission is free. Registration is required and will be available in late July; seating is limited. For more information, go to tedxchandlerpubliclibrary.com or call 480-782-2800.
TumbeBook Tips!

TumbleBookLibrary is an online collection of animated picturebooks which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love. TumbleBooks are created by taking existing picture books, adding animation, sound, music and narration to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you. There are also titles available in French and Spanish, and some books even have associated games to play.

To access TumbleBooks, start at chandlerlibrary.org, hover your mouse over the Kids & Teens tab, then choose Kids. Scroll down to find the TumbleBooks graphic on the right side of the page, and click it to begin. You'll need your library card and PIN if you're signing in from home. Then you can browse books by category or use the search box at the top to search by author, title, or reading level.

Some of our library users have also shared some great tips that we thought we'd pass on to you:
  • "We read several books on it today! I "mirrored" my iPhone screen and streamed thru Apple TV to the tv screen. Worked like a charm!! "
  • "TumbleBooks is a great way for their kids to discover new authors."
  • "My son had to do a book report for his Spanish class and he found just what he needed on Tumblebooks!"

We hope you and your family enjoy this great resource!

Volunteer Spotlight:
Homebound Book Buddy Program
Book Buddies Laura and Ruth
The Chandler Public Library's Homebound Book Buddy program delivers library materials to homebound residents in Chandler.  A library volunteer, or family volunteer team, selects books or movies for individuals in our community that can no longer visit the library due to a medical condition.  Our volunteers visit the homebound patrons twice a month, bringing requested materials or items that they think the patrons might enjoy.  The Book Buddy patrons are life-long readers and so appreciate access to this service.

In addition to the Book Buddy homebound delivery, volunteers present library programs at care facilities in the community.  Currently, our volunteer Lee leads a monthly book talk at a local care facility.  Lee says. "the time I spend with the residents benefits us both, as we get to talk not only about books, but life stories, and with the various topics, there is never a loss for conversation.  They share their experiences with books, school, families, trips, foods - you name it, we've talked about it.  One surprising favorite a few months ago was on 'flags of the world, and how they came into use' which brought out a number of travel stories.  We've 'traveled' to national parks, different states, chatted about cultures and multi-cultural holidays, done a few related crafts, and more.  There is a library of books available in their lobby, some donated by residents and others (mostly large print) came from the Chandler Library discards.  Several of the residents take turns keeping it tidy, and enjoy recommending authors that their neighbors might enjoy, so that it gets used by those still interested, and able, to read."  Many thanks to Lee and all of the other Book Buddy volunteers.  They bring so much joy to the homebound residents of our community.

Information on the Book Buddy program and volunteering for any of the Chandler Public Library volunteer roles can be found on our website.
Freegal Staff Picks
Are you using Freegal? If you call yourself a music fan, then you should be using this excellent service that gives you five (5) songs per week - absolutely free. In addition to an extensive catalogue of popular artists (Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson, Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, and hundreds more) there are also tons of new & upcoming bands and musicians to enjoy.  Whether you want to download the new, insanely catchy Justin Timberlake single "Can't Stop the Feeling", or celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde, (or 25th anniversary of Pearl Jam's Ten while you're at it) or just want to revisit a classic, Freegal is perfect for any music fan.

Every week, we post a "staff pick." This week's pick is The Jayhawks, and Mark, a Downtown Library staff member shares that The Jayhawks blend of folk, country, and roots rock has made them one of the most critically hailed and widely acclaimed artists of the alternative country movement for over 20 years.  With their latest, Paging Mr. Proust, the group has returned after a five-year hiatus doing what they do best - great songwriting, playful and heart aching vocal harmonies, and consummate musicianship.
Fans of Wilco, Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo, Neil Young, Blue Rodeo, etc. will no doubt love this record. From the Beatle-esque "Lovers of the Sun", the disjointed funk of "Ace", and the up-tempo rocker "The Dust of Long-Dead Stars", The Jayhawks have put together a fully satisfying and inspiring album.

We also keep a list of past picks that you can browse. For more information about Freegal, visit our website.
