Pilot Lunch Program

A special lunch program is now being piloted at North Mianus School until the end of the school year. The menu features "made from scratch" selections created with wholesome ingredients, including lean proteins, whole grains, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Greenwich Food Services will be evaluating the program based on student acceptance, cost of ingredients, staffing requirements and training, kitchen facilities and USDA meal-pattern requirements. The pilot lunch menu can be seen on the NMS website. Look out for some of these home-cooked recipes on your school's lunch menu now.

2012 - 2013 Yearbook

Order Deadline Friday, March 22

Don't miss out on the 2012 - 2013 OGS yearbook. It's a great memento of your child's year at OGS. The yearbook will include individual and candid photos for all grades, plus photos of events that occurred throughout the year.

The cost of the yearbook is $25, if ordered by Friday, March 22. After that date, the price will increase to $30. We will not be ordering extra books to sell later. Only those orders placed will receive a yearbook. Please complete an order form and return it, along with a check made out to OG PTA, to the blue bins in the front hall.

Progressive Dinner

Save the Date: OGS Progressive Dinner May 4th

The Progressive Dinner is the OG PTA's second largest fundraiser. It starts with separate cocktail parties for each grade then continues when each guest "progresses" to dinner at a host family's house. Invitations to follow next month.

This event cannot happen without host volunteers! Please volunteer to host or co-host a dinner or cocktail party for your child's grade. If you can host or have any questions regarding the event, please contact your grade representative by March 22.

FAQs about the Progressive Dinner can be found on the OGS website. Whether you host or come as a guest, we hope to see you there!

Advanced Learning Program (ALP)

Student Identification Process

We have begun the process of identifying students in grades 2 - 5 for placement in 2013 - 2014 grade 3 - 6 ALP program. Identification for the 2013 - 2014 grade 2 ALP program will occur in the fall of 2013. This multiple step process begins with a screening of students in math and language arts.

Parents of children who have been recommended for the evaluation phase will be notified by March 15. Parents must sign and return a consent form allowing their student to continue in the evaluation process by March 27.

Parent Nominations

Children may also be nominated for additional testing by their parents. The Parent Nomination Form will be available at your school office and on the ALP website after March 15 and must be returned to your school office by March 27.

Go Green

Turn The Key, Be Idle Free!

Idling vehicles contribute to air pollution and emit air toxins known or suspected to cause cancer, respiratory effects, and other serious health problems. Children are more susceptible to air pollution and are at increased risk for developing asthma, respiratory problems and other adverse effects because of their developing lungs and higher breathing rates.

Monitoring at schools has shown elevated levels of air toxins during the the hour coinciding with parents picking up their children. Reducing idling at schools can reduce air pollution and children's exposure to toxic vehicle exhaust. If you are going to wait more than 10 seconds, turn off your vehicle. Signs posted along parking spaces will remind you to turn the key and be idle free next week.
