 The "bigger picture" of EHR

HIE imageWith the implementation of stimulus rewards for adopting EHR (and the promise of reimbursement penalties for not), physicians across the country are adopting EHR in their practices at an uprecidented rate.  Ohio is leading all 50 states in this race to adopt EHR and reach "meaningful use" of their systems.

The utilization of EHR in medical practices is leading to the "bigger picture" of the EHR landscape in Ohio.   The development of a statewide Health Information Exchange (HIE) is underway and will allow providers to exchange healthcare information electronically across organizations within a region, community or healthcare system.  The Ohio Health Information Partnership (OHIP) is spearheading this effort.

On March 8, 2011, OHIP offered a live and video-conferenced presentation to healthcare providers and hospital personnel interested in learning more about the progress of Ohio's HIE.  If you were unable to attend, but would like to view the presentation, click here

RACERSThe time to register for the Medicare EHR Incentive Program is now.

Beginning on January 3, 2011, eligible health care professionals who wish to participate in the Medicare EHR Incentive program commenced registering online.  However, CMS is encouraging providers to register as soon as possible - even if they have not yet purchased a certified EHR.  It is also recommended to take advantage of the free help offered by the regional extension centers, like COHIE.

COHIE Director Matt Esker noted, "There is no need for a practice to have any struggles with the process of registering when COHIE is here to help.  It's as simple as giving us a call if you need us."

Another helpful tool is the CMS video, showing step-by-step the process of registering.  Click here to watch the video.

The time to register for Ohio's Medicaid Provider Incentive Program (MPIP) is soon.

The Ohio Medicaid State Health Information Technology Plan was recently approved and the Medicaid incentive program vendor was announced mid-March.  This clears the way for eligible providers to begin to register for the Ohio Medicaid Provider Incentive program soon.  To visit the MPIP website, click here

The Next Step: Attestation

Dr. on computer

If you have already implemented an EHR system and registered for the Medicare EHR Incentive Program, you may be ready for the next step - Attestation.

The CMS states,"During Attestation, eligible professionals, eligible hospitals, and critical access hospitals report numerator, denominator, and exclusion results (if applicable)

for the meaningful use objectives and attest that they have successfully met the requirements of the program."  Once an eligible provider submits their attestation information online through the Attestation System, they are qualified for a payment from the Medicare EHR Incentive Payment program.

CMS is offering providers an opportunity to preview the Attestation System prior to it's launch on April 18, 2011.  Click here to view the preview, including screen shots of the system.

Similar to the process of registering for the incentive programs, COHIE encourages all providers to call with questions or to request assistance with the attestation process.  "It is understandable that practices may have questions or apprehensions about the process.  COHIE is ready with experts on-hand to assist", explained COHIE Director Matt Esker.

Providers enrolling in the Medicaid Provider Incentive Program will follow a similar process through the state.  COHIE will keep you informed on the launch dates of the Medicaid program.
