The tour highlights eight wonderful homes from an 1892 Queen Anne to a cool 1958 Mid-Century Ranch.

Other stops include: a National Register listed model home from 1928, and a great DIY project in a 1913 bungalow. Along the way you'll pass through some of Portland's most notable residential neighborhoods, including Irvington, Laurelhurst, Beaumont, and Richmond.

Victory at City Council

for better Historic Design Review!

Last week Portland City Council voted to support our proposed historic design review fee of $250. The current fee is $950! The city's Bureau of Development Services had proposed a reduction to $475, as part of the work to update the historic design review process and fees that we have devoted much time to since last spring.

This applies to the Bureau of Development Service's "new Type I" application for smaller and simple projects. This new fee, along with a greatly streamlined historic design review process, takes effect on May 1st  for all Portland Historic and Conservation Districts, and designated Historic Landmarks. The BMF/AHC helped form the "Portland Coalition for Historic Resources" and we have all worked for nearly a year to simplify the City of Portland's sometimes unpredictable design review process. There will now, as of May 1st, be exemptions for ongoing maintenance and repair, shorter review times, and a $250 flat fee for design review for basic projects. This is indeed a great achievement and makes our preservation advocacy efforts worthwhile!

Council voted 4-1 to settle on the $250 fee we proposed, with Steve Novick voting no - on the principle that a potential subsidy from the city's general fund is unknown. Mayor Charlie Hales and Commissioners Fritz and Fish reiterated that the city often offers incentives for the type of public actions it wants to encourage, such as Accessory Dwelling Units (for which fees have been waived for a period of time.)

The Mayor and Commissioners all weighed in on the values that historic districts and historic preservation provide the public and the city as a whole. They deserve our thanks for leadership on making historic design review rules and fees much easier and affordable for homeowners and other property owners, by adopting the revisions package that we and other participants in the Portland Coalition for Historic Resources. It is clearly a great day for historic preservation in Portland!

AHC Building Tours

Group tours of the AHC are a great way for an organization to see the exhibits, have a look "  behind the scenes" at our on-site collections storage spaces, and learn about the history of the Center.

Hint: many visitors like to combine a tour here with lunch nearby and a trip to the Frank Kidd Toy Museum or OMSI. Schedule your group's visit by contacting Holly Chamberlain at by email or 503-231-7264.
