Historic Design Review Code Package
City Council Public Hearing
Tomorrow! Wednesday, February 27; 9:30 AM After nearly a year of advocacy work, we're happy to tell you that a comprehensive package of improvements to Portland's historic design review process and fees will be the subject of a city council public hearing tomorrow. Last March, BMF/AHC and other preservation activists told the City Council about the many problems with the city's historic design review process and its exorbitant fees. We asked for streamlining, more certainty, more user-friendly information and guidance for owners/applicants, and greatly reduced fees. Council told us to "go forth and fix it." We helped form the "Portland Coalition for Historic Resources" (PCHR) and have devoted hundreds of hours in weekly meetings and discussions with city bureaus (Bureau of Planning & Sustainability and the Bureau of Development Services) to get to this point - - where all parties are generally in agreement with the proposed amendments package. Our Coalition's position is linked here. Please join us at City Council and add your voice in support.

Remembering Joan Hayward
We note with sadness the death of former board member Joan Hayward (September 27, 1947 to February 6, 2013). Warm, wise, and gracious, she first became involved in 1997 and quickly became active on the Education Committee and the Kitchen Revival Tour Committee, and served on the board from 2004-2006. Her flair for living well and generously led her, among many other activities, to rehabilitate several historic dwellings, and she shared them often - for the kitchen tour, fundraisers, and meetings. As a member of the Education Committee, she helped with logistics, publicity, and evaluation, was a tour leader and presenter, and was our liaison to the Frank Lloyd Wright Gordon House project. Importantly, she gently but persistently assisted with our transition from slide projector to the then-brave new world of PowerPoint. In another move to get us into the groove, she was an early proponent of presenting programs on mid-century architecture. We appreciated her sense of humor, quick intelligence, and welcoming outlook on life. She will be missed. Oregonian Obituary.

Board member, Kimberly Moreland has recently authored "African Americans in Portland" for Arcadia Publishing.
It is available for order through Arcadia online. You can also read a great article about Kim's research in the Portland Observer here. Board Member Spotlight
Just before he completed his 6 month internship with us, Abdul Fitouri interviewed our amazing Board Member and Auction Chair Eileen Fitzsimons. Eileen is a native Oregonian who spent much of her childhood throughout rural towns in the Willamette Valley. She studied at Portland State University majoring in Art and History and she got to know our founders, Jerry and Ben, well during her early days in historic preservation. Read the full profile on Eileen here. Business member, Mary McMurray with Art First Colors for Architecture, designed new paint colors, wallcoverings, and lighting fixtures for the grand re-opening of The Old Church in downtown Portland. The splendid eleven-color palette that she designed was expertly applied by Business Member Joel Hamberg Painting.
If you are an active member or business member of the AHC, we want to hear about
it when you win a preservation related award, have your work honored in an exhibit, have your restored home featured in a magazine. Click here to learn how to share your news with us.
