Welcome to SEFLIN's New
Executive Director, Jennifer Pratt


In June, the SEFLIN Board of Directors announced the appointment of Jennifer Pratt as SEFLIN's new Executive Director. Jennifer will join the SEFLIN staff on September 9, 2015.

Jennifer comes to SEFLIN from the State Library of North Carolina, where she has been the Chief of Library Development since 2007. She led North Carolina in developing and implementing library programs such as the Edge Initiative for technology, the NC Cardinal Program for a statewide catalog, and the Project Compass initiatives for workforce development.

Please take the opportunity to welcome Jennifer when she arrives in Southeast Florida and invite her to visit your libraries this fall.
 
SEFLIN Conference - July 23

On July 23, 2015, join us in learning and thinking about how libraries connect users with new technology. Keynote speaker, Stephen Grubb, will start the day with "The Fall of RadioShack and the Renaissance of the Public Library."

In addition to 15 Breakout Sessions (see full descriptions), don't forget the 7 posters, and freebies from 14 Conference Sponsors. Ten Supporting Organizations gifted Door Prizes that can boost personal and professional networking. In addition to three new titles from Libraries Unlimited, the following local organizations have contributed valuable prizes  for social and community connections: Aberdeen Golf and Country Club, Biz to Biz Networking, Books-A-Million, Boca Bearing Company, Cycle Party, Leadership Broward, the Miami and Ft. Lauderdale locations of Painting with a Twist, and Wycliffe Golf and Country Club.

Registration: SEFLIN members, $55 and non-SEFLIN members, $135. Deadline is July 17.

 

Virtual Conference - September 18
The 2015 SEFLIN Virtual Conference, on September 18, 2015, will focus on outreach, marketing, and advocacy for libraries. The conference keynote speaker is Nancy Dowd, well-known for "The 'M' Word - Marketing Libraries" blog. Following the presentations about outreach, marketing, and advocacy in all types of libraries, John Chrastka, founder of Everylibrary.org will wrap-up the Virtual Conference.

Registration (free for library staff within Florida) will open in late July.

 

Technology Loans for SEFLIN Libraries
 
The SEFLIN Technology Petting Zoo now includes two technology charging stations and five GoPro cameras. These items join the tablets and other devices available for member library staff members to get hands-on practice. Contact [email protected] for more information.

 

New SEFLIN Member - Society of the Four Arts - King Library
Welcome to the Society of the Four Arts Gioconda and Joseph King Library, SEFLIN's newest member. The SEFLIN Board of Directors approved the membership application in May. The Society of the Four Arts King Library serves the Town of Palm Beach, but is open to all. Borrowing privileges are available with a modest annual membership fee.

Library Director, Dr. Rachel Schipper invites SEFLIN members to visit the library and its public programs. The library includes a Fine and Decorative Arts Collection with extensive selections covering the topics of decorative and interior arts, photography, architecture, art, and art history. Notable collections include the personal library of Addison Mizner, among others, as part of the rare book room. See Library Programs on the web site.   

 

Worth Noting
Latino Americans: 500 Years of History
Five Southeast Florida libraries received grants for this nationwide public programming initiative sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. The libraries received funding to support programming and public events to celebrate Latino Americans: 500 Years of History. Congratulations to Barry University, Broward County Library, Hialeah Public Library, Palm Beach State College, and  St. Thomas University.

Mentors needed for Leadership Institute
Mentors are needed for participants in the 2015-2016 Sunshine State Library Leadership Institute. Classes will begin October 2015 for the 10-month program. If you are interested in serving as a mentor, please submit a letter of interest by August 1, 2015.  See details on the SSLLI Mentors page.

Outside the Lines - September 13-19, 2015
Outside the Lines is a week-long celebration that demonstrates the creativity and innovation found in libraries. The purpose of this national campaign is to shift perceptions to demonstrate how libraries are more relevant than ever.

FACRL Conference - October 16, 2015
Tackling the Textbook Problem: Leveraging Library Resources & OERs to Reduce Costs will be Friday, October 16 at HARN Museum at the University of Florida. See the FACRL web site.

OCLC Member Forum, Florida - October 23, 2015
OCLC Logo
OCLC members will discuss updates and best practices on the OCLC services, including Cataloging and Metadata, Discovery and Resource Sharing. There will also be opportunities to share ideas and discuss library needs and opportunities with OCLC staff members. Register.

Public Library Directors Conference - October 28-29, 2015
Public Library and MLC directors will meet in Tallahassee.

Annual Meeting SEFLIN Membership Meeting - November 6, 2015
Pam Sandlian Smith, director of the AnyThink Library and former Director of the West Palm Beach Public Library will be the Keynote speaker. She will present "Creating a Culture of Innovation." The fall membership meeting, at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens will also feature elections for the SEFLIN Board of Directors. Registration will open in late September.

Florida Library Association Conference - February 29 - March 3, 2016
Florida Libraries ... Why Not? is the theme of the Conference to be held at the Plaza Hotel at Daytona Beach. See the FLA Web site.
