The Journey of Reinvention

 

Most of us have seen the ads for various diet and exercise programs, right? They treat us to a barrage of "before and after" photos, and then they inform us-story by story-how, for only 3 easy payments of $39.95, we, too, can reinvent our bodies and even our very selves!

 

     Depending on the product, I've noticed either diet or exercise is usually emphasized. For example, Shaun T's T-25 infomercials spend about 20 minutes on the exercise portion of the program; and then they briefly mention the diet plan that comes with the program. 21-Day Fix focuses on the color-coded plastic containers which portion your food; and then it briefly mentions the "easy" exercise videos that come with the program. The point? Real body reinvention requires changes in both our exercise and eating habits. There's always a catch, isn't there?

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT MCC NoVA

 

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

 

As a gift to MCC NoVA, Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins, Senior Minister of Sunshine Cathedral, will be visiting MCC NoVA May 16th and 17th. Planning is in progress for a one-day retreat to be led by Rev. Dr. Watkins on Saturday the 16th, and he will be preaching on the 17th! So mark your calendars now, and prepare to be blessed!  A sign up sheet for the on-site retreat is in the Fellowship area ~ sign up today!

Fairfax County Public Schools

Consider Adding Gender Identity

To Its Non-Discrimination Policy 

  

There will be a vote of the Fairfax County Public School Board on May 7, 7:00 pm, at Luther Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Road, Falls Church.  Call or e/mail members of the Fairfax Country School Board ( http://www.fcps.edu/schlbd/ ), and/or attend the May 7 Voting Meeting (all regular School Board meetings are held at Luther Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Road, Falls Church, at 7 p.m. on a Thursday, unless otherwise noted).

Several groups that are supporting this inclusion, and one of them, Equality Virginia, suggests wearing purple to show support if you plan to attend the May 7 meeting.    

 

 

DID YOU KNOW?

 

There is a lot more happening  

at MCC NoVA than meets the eye!

 

For example, in the month of APRIL:

  • Volunteers logged approximately 27 hours in the office and cleaning the church.
  • Five members and friends helped prepare and deliver Easter baskets as part of our monthly Feed the Homeless Ministry.
  • A total of 49 people attended our Second Fridays and Fourth Fridays transgender support groups.
  • A total of 58 people attended a community memorial service organized by our Transformations Ministry, and in honor of a member of the Second Fridays Transgender Support Group.
  • A total of 31 people participated in our ongoing "Reinvention of MCC NoVA" discussions.

HELP THE HOMELESS MINISTRY 

First Sunday each month ~ Food prep on preceding Saturday

  

Did you know that MCC NOVA helps feed the homeless in Fairfax City? On the first Sunday of each month, volunteers provide breakfast at area locations. Food prep happens on Saturday, the day before. Interested in getting involved? Contact Pat Monahan at pmmonahan@cox.net.

 

We also collect food for the United Methodist Church in Herndon.  Gail Van Buren takes the food to the pantry on the first Sunday of the month.

We are also collecting books for ESL students from Kindergarten - High School.

PRIDE Volunteers Needed!

Capital. Pride is coming June 13th (parade) and 14th (street festival). MCC NoVA will be working with other folks at the Churches United in Pride table at the festival. We will have sign up sheets for the parade and festival table available next week. Look for T-shirts soon, too!
