A REFLECTION FROM PASTOR DANNY

Giving Up Religion for Lent

A few years ago, one of my seminary colleagues wrote an article in which he stated he was giving up God for Lent. Actually, I think he meant he was giving up his ideas about God. See, like all of us, my friend has ideas about God-how God feels about certain people and issues, for example. As John Shelby Spong reminds us, however, "God" is the human word we use for something/someone we simply cannot explain. Scripture also reminds us that God's thoughts are not our thoughts, and God's ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8). So, while I believe it is normal and healthy to speculate and debate our feelings and ideas about God, holding too tightly to these feelings and speculations as the ultimate truth for all people in all times can be-and has been--unhealthy and hurtful to us and to others. So put it all together, and voila--my friend's somewhat different Lenten discipline.

Giving up religion, on the other hand, is a whole other issue-at least to me.

frosty-bough.jpg Inclement Weather  Procedure & Policy

To check whether or not a scheduled church event or activity is canceled due to inclement weather, please call the church office at 703-691-0930.  In the case of a cancellation, a message will be placed on the church answering machine 2 hours prior to a scheduled event.  If the message does not include a cancellation notice, activities will be held as scheduled.  The church will also attempt to send cancellation notices via email.

The Inclement Weather Policy of the church is found below:

It is the policy of MCC NOVA during inclement weather, all Board members will pro-actively call the Pastor or designee and state their opinion about whether or not to cancel a scheduled church activity. That call should be made at least three (3) hours prior to services or the event. Once a majority of the Board members have expressed their opinions, the Pastor or designee will update the message on the church answering machine.

When feasible, proactive telephoning or electronic contact will be attempted.  Refer to the "Emergency Contact" policy for additional information.

The Moderator or Vice Moderator of the Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing this policy.
