Malbec
93 Points

"This wine has balance and finesse with blueberry, blackberry and some walnut character. Full body, fine tannins and a beautiful finish. Drink or hold."

June 2015

93 Points

"This is the largest release from Mendel, running to some 75,000 bottles, with most of the fruit from Luján. It's quite an oaky Malbec, but the structure and finesse that are the hallmarks of the winery's style, especially in a cool year, are very much in evidence, providing backbone and complexity."

"The 2013 Malbec is produced with the grapes from an ungrafted vineyard planted in 1928 in Mayor Drummond in Luján de Cuyo at some 980 meters altitude and another one in Perdriel. After hand-sorting the grapes, the wine macerated in 50- and 80-hectoliter tanks for three weeks. It matured in a combination of new, second- and third-use French oak barrels for 12-14 months. It has a lactic nose intermixed with aromas of flowers and fresh fruit. 2013 was a cooler year and the fruit had more malic acid, which might be the explanation for the lactic character I found here. It's also more floral and shows less aromas of plums so often found in warmer vintages. The medium-bodied palate shows good balance and is juicy with sweet tannins that make it very accessible. You feel the hand of a winemaker in this textbook Malbec. It should go an extra mile in bottle with the freshness of the year."

About Mendel

Roberto de la Mota is one of Argentina's most respected and admired winemakers.

His long career in wine began when he was just 19, working with his renowned father Raul, who made wine at Bodega Weinert for 20 years (at the time Robert Parker declared that Weinert was making 'the most profound red wine in South America'). After studying Viticulture and Winemaking at the University of Montpellier Roberto made wine at Moet + Chandon's Terrazas de los Andes, then created Cheval des Andes with Pierre Lurton of Chateau Cheval Blanc in 1999. He and business partner Annabelle Sielecki founded Mendel in 2003. Having produced memorable wines since their inception Mendel has just been recognized as a "First Growth" in Tim Atkin's (MW) ranking of Argentina's greatest producers in his 2015 Argentina Special Report.

Roberto de la Mota is a unique person. A paraplegic since a 2007 car accident, he has an aura of gentle calmness and zen-like serenity that fills the room the moment he enters. You quietly become aware that you are in the presence of an immensely powerful source of positive energy. His presence is totally dominating in a way that is only possible because it is totally effortless. And of course when he speaks to you he has the special gift of tricking you into thinking that - at least for a moment - you are as smart as he is.

Malbec has adapted perfectly to Argentina's climate and soils. Mendel's Malbec is a classic expression of old-vines Mendoza fruit, with enticing aromas of violets and ripe plums and rich, deep, mouth filling flavor. Produced from 80+ year old vines in Vineyards in Mayor Drummond, Luján de Cuyo and Perdriel it can be enjoyed now for its luscious fruit, or allowed to mellow for many years in the classic Argentine tradition, to be savoured in the full glory of its maturity.
