"Chiara Boschis's enthusiasm seems to know no bound. Her 2011 Barolos are even better today than they were when I tasted them from tank just prior to bottling. Over the last few vintages in particular, the house style has evolved notably here. Today's wines are much more classic than they were just a few years ago. The Cannubi and Mosconi Barolos are both quite representative of their respective sites, while the Via Nuova, arguably the best wine in the range now, draws from a handful of sites in Barolo, Monforte and Serralunga. The 2011s were aged in equal parts cask and French oak barrels, with about 30% new wood for the portion aged in barrique. Given the explosion in prices for so many top Barolos, I am often asked who are the next set of producers that will reach superstar status. Well, Chiara Boschis is one of them."

"The 2011 Barolo Via Nuova is once again fabulous. A wine that brings together the very best of the modern and traditional schools, the 2011 is all about balance. Hints of lavender, sage, violets, dark cherries, plums and new leather add nuance in a pure, crystalline Barolo endowed with tons of nuance allied to a vertical sense of structure. The sensual voluptuousness of the vintage softens some of the contours, which only adds to the wine's considerable appeal. Although it is early, the Via Nuova is shaping up to be one of the wines of the year. It is every bit that compelling. The Via Nuova is a blend of six sites: Terlo and Liste (in Barolo), Mosconi, Ravera di Monforte (in Monforte) and Gabutti and Baudana (in Serralunga)."

About Chiara Boschis

Chiara Boschis is a dynamic symbol of 'the new Barolo', which is of course a back to the future movement profoundly rooted in the traditions of the Langhe. She is a fearsomely energetic, ambitious, and idealistic person with impeccable family credentials. Her father managed the legendary Borgogno estate; Chiara and her two brothers both worked there. Having trained as an economist, in 1990 she bought E Pira e Figli, after the death Luigi Pira, the last male heir of the historic estate. Out of respect for the Pira family (who were old friends of the Boschis) Chiara has kept the Pira name on her label, appending her own.

From the beginning her aim has been to marry the legendary power of traditional Barolo with approachability, elegance, and finesse. In 1993 she met Giorgio Rivetti, joined 'the Barolo Boys', and adopted their methods: lower yields, the use of roto-fermenters, malolactic fermentation, and aging in French barriques. Today the Chiara Boschis is revered as small estate (not more than 2,000 cases) producing open, fragrant, and supremely well-balanced wines that age in the classic manner of the great Barolos of the past - including of course the wines of Borgogno.

Via Nuova is a blend of 6 crus in the villages of Barolo (Terlo and Liste), Monforte (Ravera and Mosconi) and Serralunga (Gabutti and Baudana). The blend is designed to express Chiara's preferred style of Barolo: "Dry, fruity and harmonious, soft but stern, full of long-term persistence due to the tannins".
