 BRITISH COLUMBIA

"This lineup from Pax Mahle and Wind Gap is full of gems. After having spent a considerable amount of time in France, Italy and Napa Valley over the last year, I was simply blown away by not only the quality of these wines, but their pricing, which is so consumer friendly. I imagine many Vinous readers will be attracted to the vineyard designates, but in my view, the appellation-level Pinot and Syrah are every bit as delicious, sometimes moreso. The Wind Gap wines are made from cool sites that ripen at lower sugars than some of the sites Pax Mahle works with in his other projects. A high amount of whole clusters, often 100%, and aging in mostly neutral oak yields delicate, lifted wines long on personality and class. I can't recommend these wines highly enough."

"The 2013 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a great introduction to the Wind Gap wines. Exotic, perfumed and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2013 offers lovely depth and textural finesse in a supple, radiant style with tons of near and medium-term appeal. Hints of tangerine peel, rosewater, sweet red cherries, candy and game add considerable intrigue. I imagine much of the attention here goes to the vineyard designates, but there is something magical that can happen when fruit from complementary sites is blended. That is very much the case here."

"Wind Gap's Syrah (Sonoma Coast) is once again terrific in 2012. Wild flowers, mint, violets and dark varietal fruits lift from the glass, with a lovely layer of savory overtones from the 100% whole clusters. In 2013, the core of the blend is Nellessen, but the exuberance of that site is nicely balanced by some of the more restrained fruit sources. All the elements come together in an effortless, gracious Syrah that delivers fabulous quality and personality, all at an exceedingly fair price."

About Wind Gap

"Wind Gap is not about making the 'perfect' wine. It's about making honest, authentic and compelling wine from special vineyard sites. What interests us about the wine is what makes it different - the subtle nuances and characteristics that tell a particular wine's story, regardless of appellation." Pax Mahle

Nearly all of Pax Mahle's vineyards are affected by one wind gap or another (hence the name). A wind gap is a geological break in the coastline which helps to funnel cool marine wind, moist air and fog into the coastal vineyards, reducing heat stress on the vines and giving the wines distinctive freshness, balance and minerality.

Wind Gap's wine philosophy is not new - natural yeasts, low yield, meticulous farming practices, some whole cluster fermentation when it is warranted. Secondary fermentations are never blocked or inoculated - the wines have a way of balancing themselves.

These practices result in truly compelling wines that are some of the purest examples of terrior in California.
