"The clarity and precision in this wine shows incredible blueberry, blackberry, hazelnut, and hints of stone. Full body, amazing complexity. It goes on for minutes. Chewy yet offers a bright austerity."

"Still a baby, the 2013 Noemía is possibly the best ever produced at this address, and I can say so because I had the luxury to taste all the vintages ever produced since 2001 (no 2005 was bottled). This pure Malbec is sourced from a 1.5-hectare vineyard planted in 1932 in Mainque in Río Negro, Patagonia. The wine is always raised in brand new French oak barriques for some 18 months, but it's a wine made for the long haul. Right now there are some notes of exotic woods and spices intermixed with aromas of blueberries, blood oranges, violets and even rose petals and it is developing subtle nuances as the wine warms up in the glass. The palate has a cool effect, maybe it's the acidity or the chalky tannins that stick to your teeth and leave a tasty, umami-like, almost salty sensation of deep coolness in your mouth. Precise and pure, the tannins are sophisticated and the overall balance is superb. My guess is that this will evolve magnificently and for a long time in bottle. As far as track record, even the initial 2001 when tasted in 2015 was not over the hill, and the vineyards and winery work has improved greatly since then, so I'm sure this will be very long-lived. Let's check it back in ten years time. Kudos to winemaker Hans Vinding Diers!"

Bodega Noemía

Ever since it was first described as 'the end of the earth' by Charles Darwin - ironic in a way, since it inspired a book called 'On the Origin of Species' -  Patagonia has had mythic status for its remoteness and awe-inspiring beauty. It is now emerging as a source of unique wines with a too-good-to-be-true story - one of the least populated and least polluted habitats on earth, the Andes, endless windswept plains, dinosaur bones, penguins - and now, astonishingly, wine.

Bodega Noemía is collaboration between Danish winemaker Hans Vinding-Diers and Countess Noemi Marone Cinzano. Hans Vinding-Diers (whose cousin is Peter Sisseck of Pingus and Hacienda Monasterio fame) is the winemaker for the estate.  The project is new, but intriguingly viticulture in Patagonia is not: Bodega Noemia was inspired by the discovery of a small plot (1.5 hectares) of old vine, pre-phylloxera Malbec in the Río Negro Valley, where almost non-existent rainfall and incessant breezes make vine diseases virtually unknown.

The estate's top wine is Bodega Noemía. It is 100 percent Malbec from the original 1.5 ha plot planted in 1932. All the fruit is harvested by hand in accordance to the lunar cycle (the estate is certified Biodynamic by both Demeter and Argencert) and then de-stemmed berry by berry. The goal is to attain the highest possible quality with the least possible intervention, producing wine that is a true reflection of its pristine environment.  Fermentation takes place in cement vats and elevage in oak barrels. The wine is classically structured, with a dense core of ripe brambly fruit balanced by uplifting, bright acidity - a function of the extreme thermal amplitude in the region, where, throughout the growing season hot days are coupled with very cold nights.

Bodega Noemía routinely receives rave reviews. Wine & Spirits Magazine has again selected the estate as one of its Top 100 Wineries of 2015.
