"Giancarlo Pacenti's new releases are impressive. Pacenti is one of the most inquisitive, restless producers in Montalcino, and that comes through in wines that keep getting better and better."

"A pretty, flawless 2009 Brunello with dark-berry and cherry character, a full body and a silky texture. It's a wine that shows reserve and class for the vintage. Better in 2016."

"The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is comprised of fruit from the northern half of the appellation harvested between October 5 to the 10 and fruit from the southern half harvested the last week of September. This range proved essential in maintaining the balance - especially between sweet fruit and acidity - that defines this beautiful wine. The use of wood (24 months in barrique) has also been executed with care and restraint adding more to the overall texture and richness of the wine than it does to the nose per se. Drink: 2016-2025.

Year after year, Siro Pacenti (run by the detailed-minded Giancarlo Pacenti) is one of the estates I most enjoy tasting during my annual trip to Montalcino. Talk about hitting the nail on the head, even in a more challenging vintage like 2009. Both Brunellos presented this year are compelling, bright and show enough of the proverbial "baby fat" to carry through them through the years. The winery is located in the northern quadrant of the appellation, although some fruit for the base Brunello is sourced from Piancornello, in the far south of the production zone."

"Sometimes dismisssed (unfairly in my view) as an über modernist, Giancarlo Pacenti makes wines that have more than even concentration to cope with the barriques. This comes from older vineyards and is a serious, concentrated style that combines fruit from northern and southern zones. Complex, balanced and long on the palate, it shows sweet, brambly fruit, subtle oak nuances and just a hint of reduction. 2016-22"

"Fresh raisin with mountain soil on nose. Structured with dry tannin, ripe red fruits, coffee beans with balsamic character. Truly outstanding Rosso di Montalcino."

"The 2012 Rosso di Montalcino jumps from the glass with sweet red cherries, cinnamon, flowers and mint. Juicy, supple and wonderfully vibrant, the 2012 impresses for its balance and harmony. Hints of sage, tobacco and rosemary linger on the close. I tasted the 2012 in tank, just prior to bottling."

About Siro Pacenti

Identified by the Wine Spectator as 'the best winemaker in the appellation of Brunello di Montalcino', Giancarlo Pacenti took over running his family's 60 hectare estate in 1988. His wines are renowned for their combination of richness and structure.  They somehow remain remarkably fresh, pure, and elegent, despite being aged in French oak barriques rather than the large Slovenian oak botti many producers choose in the pursuit of freshness, purity and elegance.

The total estate includes 20 hectares of cereal crops and 20 hectares of olive groves and woods as well as 20 hectares of sangiovese grosso vineyards. Production is 60,000 bottles per year, divided between Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino. The vines are spread across 7 plots, with 17 acres in the cooler zone NE of the town of Montalcino and 32 acres in the southern end of the appellation.  The two terroirs present contrasting characteristics which combine to build complexity in the finished wine:  the clay/limestone vineyards at Pelagrilli north east of the town contribute aroma and elegance; the red mineral-rich soils south of the famous Medieval abbey of Sant'Antimo provide power and fine tannins.

Siro Pacenti's Brunellos are decidedly modern, emphasizing freshness and finesse rather than the massive tannin of the historical style.  The wines are beautifully balanced and designed to age gracefully.  The Rosso is legendary; not surprising, since it is made from fruit from the same vineyards as the Brunello. It is aged for six months in oak and one year in bottle.  It is one of the greatest values in all of Tuscany.
