"A new discovery for me was Quinta da Touriga-Chã. The wines from this vineyard are remarkable: sweet, ripe and dense but with a lovely fine-grained structure. They are among the Douro's best."

"The 2011 Quinta da Touriga - Cha is a blend of 88% Touriga Nacional and 12% Touriga Franca aged for 15 months in a mixture of new (77%) and used (23%) French oak. It comes in at 14.7% alcohol. By an inconsequential margin, this would be my pick of the three reviewed this issue, but it will largely depend on your stylistic preferences, the powerful blockbuster (2009) versus the perfectly balanced and more caressing charmer (the 2011). It is simply gorgeous. Beautifully balanced, tight and well-structured, it shows the promise of harmony to come while remaining intense, concentrated (in a more subtle way, perhaps, than the 2009) and focused. Fragrant and tasty, this should develop well and become just beautiful in time, acquiring complexity along the way. More approachable than the 2009, it could still use a few years to settle down and begin to show its real stuff"

Issue # 214, Mark Squires

"A deep opaque, plummy hue. In the mouth it delivers a toasty, concentrated mouthful of dark berry and currant fruit with an attractive lick of schistous, dusty minerals and powerful, slightly chewy tannins.  On day two when the oak has blown off a little, brighter red cherry and currant and lifted bergamot and violet shine through. Moreover, its initially austere acidity, the tannins too, seem better integrated with the fruit - juicier and suppler respectively. A very long, layered finish still satisfyingly fresh and focused on day 3 reveals a savoury rub of dried sage, gum cistus, coffee bean and liquorice spice. With great mineral extract, this is a powerful, complex wine of stature, which will age for 10 years plus with ease."

"Though well structured and markedly mineral, with classic Douro Superior bergamot and orange blossom lift to nose and palate, the style is a little more forward, international even, in terms of its fruit and oak profile. A ripe but present backbone of tannins is fleshed out by velvety, sweet vanillin oak-perfumed kirsch, cassis and succulent black cherry fruit. A long, bright-fruited finish reveals a hint of smoky gun powder."

About Quinta da Touriga

Quinta da Touriga is the culmination of a lifelong dream. José António Castro Ramos Pinto Rosas dedicated over 50 years of his life to wine growing in the Douro Valley. He was the CEO of Ramos Pinto where he led the charge at Quinta de Ervamoira, a pioneering modern estate. Ervamoira was the first estate in the Duoro to plant vertically on slopes rather than on horizontal terraces. It was also the first estate to plant by block, pairing individual grape varieties to the most suitable terroir. When Ramos Pinto was sold to Roederer in the early 1990's, José António, then 72 years old, seized the opportunity to plant his ideal vineyard and Quinta da Touriga was born.

After a detailed study of the region using the highly detailed topographical maps José António settled on a site high in the Douro Superior and with his son Jorge Rosas started the vineyards from scratch. Planting mostly Touriga Nacional with a small percentage of Tinta Roriz Touriga Franca and other indigenous grapes they implemented many of the philosophies José António had developed at Quinta de Ervamoira. In the years since planting the roots of the vines have spread deep into the poor "xisto" (slate) soils seeking minerals and water allowing the estate to be completely dry farmed. These deep roots enable the vines ability to survive the heat of the region and provide structure, complexity, and minerality, and tremendous capacity for aging.
