"Giorgio Pelissero has been on a roll over the last few years. Every wine that emerges from this cellar is now fabulous, which places Pelissero in the top echelon of Piedmont producers. Stylistically, the wines are super-rich and concentrated, but also impeccable in their balance. The 2010 Barbarescos are among the best wines I have ever tasted here."

"A beautifully, centered, polished wine the 2010 Barbaresco Vanotu impresses for its striking inner perfume and exceptional balance. In 2010, the Vanotu is impeccable and harmonious from the very first taste. Leather, licorice, mint and sweet spices resonate on the textured, inviting finish. The 2010 is unusually voluptuous for the year. Readers should give the 2010 another few years for the French oak to integrate. Giorgio Pelissero's wines have a way of coming together in bottle. I expect that will be the case here as well."

"The 2010 Barbaresco Vanotu is an extremely persuasive expression of Nebbiolo that opens to a dark, brooding color, thick concentration and an attractive dark garnet hue. The personality here is overtly savory and masculine with layers of cured meat and leather that support a wider offering of pressed cherries and tar. The generosity is outstanding. The only element out of place is the tannin that is spectacularly young at this point. This wine won't show its best side for years more to come. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2035."

"Pelissero's 2010 Barbaresco Tulin explodes from the glass with a head-spinning array of aromas and flavors. Rich, full-bodied and intense, the 2010 boasts stunning depth to match its racy, intense structure. Deeply spiced, mentholated notes saturate the full-bodied, voluptuous finish. The combination of fruit and structure is super exciting, to say the least."

"The 2010 Barbaresco Tulin shows sheer power and extra concentration that is noticeable both in terms of the wine's darkened color and the beautiful intensity of its aromas. Opulent oak and spice are wrapped tightly around a solid core of dark cherry and pressed blackberry. The tannins are clearly on the astringent side, but the aging window here promised to be extra long. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030."

Issue #207
Pelissero

The Pelissero family are deeply rooted in the Langhe, proudly proclaiming their 'peasant DNA'. They have been bottling their own wine for three generations, beginning in 1960 "using artisanal methods in a small cellar on the ground floor of (their) home". They have always focused their efforts upon the great native grapes of Langhe - nebbiolo, barbera, and dolcetto, as well as tiny amounts of freisa, favorita, and moscato. From humble beginnings they have increased their production to 250,000 bottles a year, produced from 38 hectares of small plots spread across Treiso (where their home is located), Neive, Barbaresco, and Nevighe. Today the family business is run by the youthful and dynamic Giorgio Pelissero, who is passionately committed to preserving the viticultural heritage of his family and their native region.

The wines are no longer made in the Pelissero's home - there is now a modern winery located at Augenta, the location of the family's biggest vineyard plot. At 410 metres, this is as high-altitude as vineyards get in Barbaresco: the panoramic view of the majestic Alps - seeming somehow to encircle the property - is unforgettable. Classic soils of sandstone, limestone, and blue marl combine with the high altitude to create ideal growing conditions, producing harmonious wines blessed with fresh acidity and great depth of fruit.

Today we are offering tiny quantities of two classic Barbarescos. Vanotu is a very special wine for the Pelissero family: its name is derived from the diminutive form of Giovanni, the name of Giorgio's grandfather. The vines were planted in 1964, in calcareous soils at an altitude of 350 metres. It is aged for 20/22 months in barriques, 80% of which are new, then aged in bottle for an additional 9 months. It is eminently cellar-worthy. Tulin contains fruit from vines planted in 1950 and 1971; in order to produce a more forward style, it is a 50/50 blend of lots fermented in stainless steel and oak. Pelissero's wines present a lovely expression of nebbiolo's suppleness and fragrance as well as delivering tremendous potential to age.
