Today's Offer: Domaine Confuron-Cotétidot

"The Confuron style is for crafting old school burgs (they don't even own a destemmer) with long maceration times and almost two years in barrel. However, if you like the serious built-to-age old school style, this is one of the very best addresses around."

"An especially spicy nose of black cherry, earth and the hallmark sauvage character precedes seductively textured, powerful and focused big-boned and ultra-serious flavors that explode on the hugely long and palate drenching finish. This seems to have endless reserves of tannin-buffering sap, which again is a good thing as the supporting structure is particularly firm. Once again, a lot of patience will be required to see this at its best."

"Strong reduction completely hides the fruit but there is excellent verve to the rich, intense and quite round medium-bodied flavors that possess a velvety texture on the firm, dusty and impressively persistent finish. This is a relatively big and robust example of the appellation and clearly built to age for 20 years or more. Excellent potential here."

90-93 Points

"A pretty and relatively high-toned nose of pure, cool and well-layered stone, red berries and a hint of underbrush where the latter can also be found on the mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that possess real verve on the tension-filled, dry and serious finish. As it always is, this is a firm wine of refinement and purity, indeed this displays Zen-like poise."

"A spicy and distinctly earthy nose of ripe red and somber dark berry fruit slides gracefully into robust, intense and impressively rich flavors that display excellent size and weight as well as a textured mouth feel. This is also very firm but there is plenty of tannin-buffering extract and coats the palate on the driving and markedly persistent finish. This should be excellent if given sufficient time that it will very much need."

About Domaine Confuron-Cotétidot

The prestige of this splendid Vosne-Romanee estate has never been higher:  in 2012 for the first time Confuron-Cotétidot attained the top 3-star ranking of Burgundy producers in la Revue du Vin de France, joining an elite group of just 10 estates that includes Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Leroy, Rousseau, Roumier, Clos du Tart, and Mugnier.

The Confuron family have a unique pedigree. They have been involved in winegrowing since the 17thC, first as propagators of vines. They were so successful that there is a clone named after them - pinot Confuron.  Few Burgundian families can claim to be so deeply rooted in the wine culture of the Cote d'Or.

Today the Confurons are firmly established in the upper echelons of winemaking in Burgundy. Patriarch Jack is a great character, a classic Burgundian maverick.  His son Yves not only makes the wine at Confuron-Cotétidot, but also at the legendary 400-year-old Domaine de Courcel in Pommard.  His brother Jean-Pierre assists at Confuron-Cotétidot while making the wine at Chanson, where the illustrious Gilles de Courcel is Managing Director.  Like nowhere else, in Burgundy such interconnections are profoundly significant.

After a brief flirtation with the Parker-pleasing winemaking methods of the now-notorious Guy Accad in the 1980's,the Confurons have returned to their artisanal roots. They proudly proclaim that they do not even own a crusher-destemmer; their focus is farming first and foremost, supported by non-interventionist winemaking.  Spectacularly, their vineyards have never been treated with herbicides or pesticides.  The winemaking recipe is simple: late-picked whole bunch wines from old vines. These are classic old-school red burgundies, full of character complexity and depth of flavour.
