"Jacque Diebolt represents the third generation of this family of Alsacienne origin to estate-bottle, a lineage that goes all the way back to the turn of the dawn of the 20th century. He and his wife Nadia nee Vallois have established an enviable reputation and been highly influential in inspiring others to estate-bottle and consumers to appreciate Champagne as a great wine. Well-sited vineyards and a predominance of old vines and selections massales in Cramant, Chouilly, Cuis and Epernay are certainly instrumental in those achievements."

"(made from fruit grown in Cramant, Mesnil-sur-Oger and Chouilly; Lot DEG-18-12-12):  Light green- gold color.  Intensely perfumed aromas of lemongrass, lime zest, quince, smoky minerals and toasty lees.  Fleshy orchard fruit flavors are deepened by peach pit and floral tones and braced by a tangy citrus fruit nuance.  Fills out on the finish, picking up a note of bitter pear skin and showing excellent mineral-driven persistence and lingering floral character."

"Diebolt-Vallois NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Prestige Disg. 2/2013 - based on vintage 2010 with reserves of 2008-2009 - is sourced from Cramant, Chouilly and Le Mesnil (hence grand cru-rated) and its reserve portion spends time in barrel. Apple and pear, almond and hazelnut - with overtones of yeast and toasted grain - are present in the nose, anticipating a lusciously juicy, subtly piquant palate performance and a finish that - as with most of the other wines I tasted most recently at this address - is characterized by generosity and purity of fruit, reinforced by what seems to be a routine seven grams of residual sugar. The latter may also be instrumental in generating a pleasantly confectionary side to the almond flavors as marzipan and frangipane. For all of its richness, this preserves a lovely sense of buoyancy throughout and finishes with admirable refreshment as well as impressive sheer persistence. I would plan on enjoying it over the next 2-3 years."

"(63% pinot noir, 27% chardonnay and 10% pinot meunier; LR 11):  Limpid orange.  A highly fragrant bouquet evokes tangerine, raspberry, yellow rose and chalky minerals.  At once deep and lively, with powerful citrus fruit and red berry flavors given spine and lift by zesty minerality.  This vibrant, palate-coating rose would cut through rich, creamy dishes but also drinks very nicely on its own."

About Diebolt-Vallois

The Diebolt and Vallois families have a distinguished history in the Côte des Blancs. The Vallois family has been growing vines in Cuis since the 15th century; the grandfather of current proprietor Jacques Diebolt began making estate bottled champagne at the beginning of the 20th century. Champagne Diebolt-Vallois was created in 1960, when Jacques married Nadia Vallois and incorporated some of the vineyard holdings that belonged to the Vallois family into the Diebolt estate.

The vineyard holdings are spread over the villages of Cramant, Chouilly, Cuis, Oger and Epernay. Diebolt-Vallois were originally registered as a Récoltant-Manipulant but are now a Négociant-Manipulant. They own 13 ha of vineyards and purchase the crop from another 2-3 ha from another branch of the Vallois family.  Many Champagne lovers have asked about the change to Négociant-Manipulant and its impact on the wines. For us the shift is a mere bureaucratic technicality (however irritating), since the farming and winemaking are totally unchanged. We love the wines today as much as ever, and David Schildknecht agrees:

"This is, incidentally, one of an increasing number of top estates to officially become negociants - trading the little letters "RM" on their labels for "NM" - as a means of expanding their production, but without sacrificing one iota of viticultural control: they merely purchase the fruit from vineyards they now farm that are in the extended family, in this case Nadia Vallois' paternal estate."

Jacques and Nadia are assisted in day-to-day operations by their children, Isabelle and Arnaud.  The family produces four different non-vintage cuvees, including a Rosé and two vintage dated wines

Diebolt-Vallois is a quintessential example 'the new Champagne' - two venerable Champenois families producing superbly distinctive wines on a very small scale.
